Rotghroth Rhapsody madrigan
I can't believe I don't know this after playing through the game about five times, I guess I never thought about it. There's a mine in the Azure Gallery where you're attacked by some skribbane addicts. You find a note from Dorikas to Elner. Where the heck is Elner? I am almost certain that you encounter this character, but I can't find him anywhere.
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
He was one of the unnamed skribbane addicts that attack you in the mine or on the surface. The note is there to show another plot that Dorikas has in play to sow confusion.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
1 unnamed-party attacked at Muck's mines. Some quest was prolly related them.
Magnificent Ornk Dikiyoba
Dikiyoba kind of remembers him as one of the miners who attack you there. Dikiyoba could be misremembering, though.
Rotghroth Rhapsody madrigan
Thanks everybody. I couldn't figure out why I had never hunted the traitor down.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
Cause you killed him asap.
Ineffable Wingbolt Øther
I thought he was the dead guy on the ground that the addicts were grouped around.
Unflappable Drayk Jeran Korak
This thread could see the beginning of a new cult of Elner-Hunters mayhaps?
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
Why? He was minor detail at game (bit above that spy at Tranq).

Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
What are you gonna do to their heads?
Rotghroth Rhapsody Feo Takahari
Come to think of it, Elner was also one of the members of the initial surface exploration team in the third game. A name worth reusing, I suppose?
Unflappable Drayk Toby-Linn
Was Elner the one who lived that you find injured in Softport? If so, maybe that was still him. Crushed by his failure at exploring the surface, he turns to a life of crime on Avernum's frontiers....
Rotghroth Rhapsody Feo Takahari
No, that was Tucker. There were two explorers whose names began with E, and the dialogue referred to each by both names (presumably an error.) I think Elner was "supposed" to be the dead fellow in the cockroach-making place.
Unflappable Drayk Toby-Linn
Ah, of course! Well it would have made a nice theory.
Ineffable Wingbolt Rent-an-Ihrno
He probably would've had a higher rang if he had really turned to be a villain. Plus, he seemed like a pretty nice fellow.
