  1. In a book, you simply follow the plot. In a game, you help change the plot

     

    Mostly, but "Give yourself Goosebumps" from my childhood was rather more interesting. It's similar to how the talk-node system works in SW games, as each page contains a scene of action and a list of options each of which leads you to another page. It's a personal version of the classic Goosebumps horror, as you yourself are the protagonist of the book's story.

    You enter a dark, foul-smelling and evil-looking house at midnight. You look around the place, wondering what to do. You see two big, black demons guarding the front door, but there is also a door to the right, which is locked, but the lock looks rusty and easily break-able. What do you do ?

    • Try to kill the demons and open the door (Toss a coin. If Heads, turn to Page 25 and if Tails turn to Page 28)
    • Try to break the lock and open the door to the right (Turn to Page 37)

    I'm sure such books come under a general category, but the most I could get out of Wikipedia was that G-Y-Goosebumps is derived from the Choose Your Own Adventure series.

  2. At least it's not just the mods who're talking to each other all the time. :p

     

    A live dissection of the Geneforge, byte by byte, to make a BoA-like editor for creating new Geneforge scenarios doesn't seem to have sparked a lot of interest. If that isn't forum-death, then I don't know what is. Well, I could be biased, but Blades-of-Geneforge and Geneforge-MMORPG used to be hot topics around here some time ago. Maybe the players have moved on to Avadon and the Avernum remakes, but if the numbers are low even over there, then well *shrug*.

  3. Witty titles, but it's not always obvious why a member got/has their particular one.

     

    Random thought : the mods seem to be very traditional; they don't update their statuses ('cept Sylae).

  4. Another mentioned something being 'all in the head', but I found this a strange question. Most things are 'all in the head', in the sense that they're in your brain.

     

    I took that to mean you can't really be attracted to someone of your own gender and that you're just thinking things up (because you're human), which was what I thought until I read that animals display same-sexual behaviour also (Wiki).

  5. Geneforge series is the only one where Jeff tried to create two routes to victory. Traditional hack and slash versus stealth, mechanics, and leadership to win.

     

    The availability of multiple choices is overdone. Meeting that helpful character who tells you "If you want traps, go Left or if you like hacking rogues better, then go Right" makes it boring after a while.

  6. chess have been chess over centuries, no, graphics are not important.

     

    I did take a fancy to that 3D chess they had back in the days of dos. So long as it doesn't interfere with the gameplay or make it hard to differentiate between the pieces, having animated Chess characters is quite okay.

     

    they built a simulator.. and played Battle field III on it ..?... it really was amazing.. I cant wait until home entertainment gets to that kind of level

     

    Even if it doesn't go home-level, having a game-cafe dedicated to such stuff would be great.

  7. "Computer, analyze this file [the current version of BoE] and rewrite it in Java, using the specs in [file name]."

     

    I'd been dreaming of a compiler which does stuff like, if you say "Make me a game which is an RPG, takes up several gigs of space, has a fantastic storyline, has awesome graphics and audio effects, has an old-school stats-based character building system etc" and it actually does that.

     

    I just wish things worked that way now and not many decades after.

  8. He's basically a perversion of all of the shaper order stands for, he's far from the 'older classical era of shapers'.

     

    There was no reason for the shapers to stick together until the rebellion posed a challenge to their rule. So in the pre-rebellion days the Shapers were a lot more self-serving (even Rawal-like, considering the un-controlled research on Sucia island) as they only had themselves and their standing within the Shaper community to think about. And insert the survival-of-the-fittest concept somewhere within this paragraph.

     

    It was the rebellion slapping them in the face that brought about all the team spirit, and quite possibly it was only then that even the Shaper Council became a lot more important.
