  1. Unless music was obtained from the public domain, Spiderweb would have to pay for it. This translates into me paying more for the game. Besides, I can play music of my choice at the same time (which I usually choose not to). -------------------- Laughter is not at all a bad beginning for a friendship, and it is far the best ending for one. - Oscar Wilde
  2. In BoA, you're able to use a predefined dialog box for portals. Methinks this wasn't changed, and the Mac testers didn't pick up on it. -------------------- The one charm of marriage is that it makes a life of deception absolutely necessary for both parties. - Oscar Wilde
  3. What language are you using, Niemand (can't check myself 'cause StuffIt is of the Devil)? -------------------- The McKenzie Brothers explain Nimtz and Stahlhofen's observations by way of analogy with a 20-car train departing Chicago for New York with 100 cases of 24 Molsons Beer ("two-fours" in Canuck-speak). The stopwatch starts when the centre of the train leaves the station, but the person holding the stopwatch drinks a case of 24 at each stop. So when the train arrives in New York, now comprising only two cases of beer, the person holding the stopwatch wakes up from his drunken stupor, doesn't remember a thing for the last 23 hours, can't find the stopwatch (he sold it to someone to stake him the last 2 cases) and now claims the trip was "instantaneous" although the train itself hasn't exceeded its reported speed. And there you have it - The McKenzie Brothers' explanation [of group velocity]... Beer DOES affect relativity, in a relative sort of way. I guess. (Slashdot)
  4. From Schrodinger's and Zeviz's Nethergate Page (see the forum header): Quote: You will need to obtain 3 opening stones. One is found in the NE in a hidden room, another is in the east pool, and the third one is SW on a body (cross the lava), and the fourth is found by jumping down from a cliff in the west. Jumping down the cliff to get a stone will of course harm you a bit, so try get the other one you're missing. -------------------- Being natural is simply a pose, and the most irritating pose I know. - Oscar Wilde
  5. What's your party make-up like? I found that the way I played Nethergate as Romans differed a lot from the way I usually play as Celts (or my usual strategy in the Avernum games, for that matter). If you're using the default Roman party, you'll only have one spellcaster. Make sure that he can cast Shield. I think that he does by default, but I can't remember for sure. In any case, Shield is a low-level Roman's best friend (a Celt's, too), with Battle Rage not far behind. My usual attack follows this pattern: my javelin thrower runs three spaces away and throws a javelin, my two fighters move away (but not so far as to make my javelin thrower or spellcaster the closest target), and my spellcaster casts Shield on Fighter #1. Repeat, but this time (surprise, surprise) cast Shield on Fighter #2. By now, your fighters are probably getting tired of those pesky Goblins insulting their cowardice, so let them (finally!) engage them. Make them fear your superior Roman training! (At least, that's the way I do Romans at low levels. Others will probably have better tactics. For instance, I haven't even touched First Aid with my Roman party - is this a useful skill? But the moral of the story is not to charge into battle before your buff spells. A Shield spell can save you a number of Minor Healings, and it only costs one more energy point than Minor Healing does.) As with most other Spiderweb games I've played, following the storyline gives you the easier quests, and in the right order. I don't remember the Ruined Hall being too difficult - as long as you're healed up before you head downstairs; that fairy seems to know something you don't. -------------------- My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or the other of us has to go. - Oscar Wilde
  6. This is a 'problem' in Blades of Avernum too. Either the definition of the bookcase terrain needs to be changed so it blocks movement and view, or a wall needs to be put on the adjacent tile. I let Jeff know about this, but he didn't respond. Rather hard to get changes when you're just testing a port instead of the original game. -------------------- He is really not so ugly after all, provided, of course, that one shuts one's eyes, and does not look at him. - Oscar Wilde
  7. C'mon, people, it's a bloody cat. Were people this upset when, say, Patrick or Micah died? Cheeseball was fine, but in the end he was a very minor NPC with smart alec comments that can be provided by any standard issue imp. -------------------- "I've decided to start up a line of contraceptives: Inconceivables."
  8. When I change cr_default_attitude, new creatures have the new default attitude, but creatures that have already been placed in the Editor has the old default attitude. I can understand why it's like this (the Editor doesn't have a 'default' choice for attitudes), but I'd like to know if there are any other creature definition changes that don't affect old creature instances. I made the bulk of this scenario two years ago with the intention that I'd leave all the definition fine-tuning last. -------------------- No flying machine will ever fly from New York to Paris. - Orville Wright, 1908
  9. EDIT: Nevermind. -------------------- Most modern calendars mar the sweet simplicity of our lives by reminding us that each day that passes is the anniversary of some perfectly uninteresting event. - Oscar Wilde
  10. Well, yeah. Nethergate: Resurrection isn't a rewrite of the same magnitude that Avernum was. From what I understand, better graphics and higher resolution (not to mention being able to play on newer systems) were the main features of the rewrite. Apparently, there are new dungeons, but having only played the demo for the original, I wouldn't know. Your suggested features (cutscenes, character selection, etc.) are great, but they would have had to be requested before the Mac release. By the time the Windows beta testers get it, they're just fixing the porting bugs. And this is the second time today someone pointed out the lack of looking with a right mouse click. I never, ever, realized you could do this in a Spidweb game. When did this happen? Is it not documented because right-clicking doesn't apply to Macs? -------------------- Over the piano was printed a notice: Please do not shoot the pianist. He is doing his best. - Oscar Wilde
  11. This looked like another Archmagus Michael incident at first... Anyways, it's officially released now on the main Spiderweb page. -------------------- "I will have none of your logic here!"
  12. It's quite simple: Nethergate yesterday and Nethergate: Resurrection to-morrow, but never Nethergate: Resurrection today. -------------------- "Well, I'll just bludgeon you with the orange, then."
  13. Also realize that you can use Kelandon's High Level Party Maker to level up a new party to whatever level you want (find it here ). In fact, I rarely 'beef up' in scenarios, as Lazarus put it. I use the HLPM unless I'm playing some sort of series. EDIT: I disagree, Lenar. Getting certain artefacts shouldn't be a prerequisite for scenarios. Like people saying not to attempt Bahs until you have Alderage from Canopy. I shouldn't be forced to play in any order, unless it's a series. -------------------- To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research. - Steven Wright
  14. Yeah, pretty much what I thought. Altering the skills/spells/etc. themselves wouldn't be too difficult, at least not for what I have in mind. It's the stuff that you can't set with AvernumScript (character graphics, etc.) that I was worried about. Quote: TKT Y'know, usually people wait until a scenario is released before referring to it with obscure acronyms. -------------------- How do you tell when you're out of invisible ink? - Steven Wright
  15. Are prefabricated parties system-independant, or do separate ones have to be made for both Windows and Mac? -------------------- Hard work pays off in the future, laziness pays off now. - Steven Wright
  16. Code: 314c314< #define OPERATING_SYSTEM "Mac OS"---> #define OPERATING_SYSTEM "Windows" C'mon, Jeff, it's that simple! A month is total overkill! -------------------- Toilet out of order. Please use floor below.
  17. Has anyone looked into this before? I've started to, but I'd rather not replicate other's work. I'm using Windows. -------------------- Everyone has a photographic memory, some just don't have film. - Steven Wright
  18. Y'know, the world won't end if your first playthrough isn't fully optimal. -------------------- The town hall is closed until opening. It will remain closed after being opened. Open tomorrow.
  19. If I'm reading correctly, you opened up the BoA scenario editor (which opened fine), created a scenario (setting its name, outdoor size, etc.), which also worked. The crash only came when you tried to load the scenario. I highly doubt you were using the Mac Editor; the Editor wouldn't have opened in the first place. Presumably this isn't a one time thing, so maybe try reloading the editor. If redownloading the editor doesn't work, maybe try the 3D Editor (pick 'Win3DRelease.zip). -------------------- Out to lunch. If not back by five, out for dinner also.
  20. Check out Ormus\'s page , which works for Windows as far as I can tell. -------------------- During the summer I like to go to the beach and make sand castles out of cement... and wait for kids to run by and try to kick them down. - James Leemer
  21. By Syn: Quote: And now we know why Dorikas was unkillable in A4. Well, it was fairly obvious that he would return sometime in the future. Most villains who shout the desire for revenge as they jump off-stage do. EDIT: Figures I'd get second page. Quote for context. -------------------- Tinsel is really snake mirrors. - Steven Wright
  22. Ah, makes sense now (though the screenshots page still lists Vahkohs as the villain ). It'll be interesting to see how Dorikas and his lackeys fight in this one. Presumably, having all of his forts sacked in Avernum 4 would have a bad effect on his power base. I remember hearing something about A5 being set in a new section of the caves; is this still the case? -------------------- The other day I was arrested for scalping low numbers at the deli. - Steven Wright
  23. Vahkohs? Like, killing him in Exile / Avernum 3 and DwtD wasn't enough? Meh. Third time's the charm. -------------------- Right now I'm having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before. - Steven Wright
  24. For consistency, I'd use get_flag, because there is no set_sdf or inc_sdf, just set_flag and inc_flag. I think JV just uses get_flag. EDIT: According to the Wikibook reference: Quote: short get_flag(short a,short Identical to get_sdf. short get_sdf(short a,short Returns SDF(a,. So I'm guessing JV just had get_sdf to begin with, then added get_flag for consistency, leaving get_sdf just in case some of his code still referenced it. -------------------- Do not use for drying pets. - Warning label on a microwave
