I did the exact same thing, but I kept getting killed by the giants.
  2. They are both great games. I enjoyed both immensely, but Nethergate has a bit of an edge over Avernum because of it's originality. Let's face it, however great Avernum was, it was still a remake of Exile. Also, Nethergate had all those random little things that you thought would be important but never were like the Wishes fish, Pearlblossom, the Puzzle Box, etc. I just loved all the little details of that game. Aside from BoX, It was Jeff's greatest game ever, and as far as Jeff's contribution goes, Nethergate is better than BoX.

LCD monitors are getting cheaper all the time. Their electric consumption is considerably less than CRTs. However, if you have your heart set on a 15-in CRT, you might want to check this one out.
  4. I don't know anything about your specific monitor, but I do know that the refresh rate can usually be pushed a little higher than the specs say it can go. If you uncheck the box in your advanced display settings like I suggested, you can probably push it to at least 70Hz. Don't worry, you won't hurt your monitor. If it can't handle it, the screen will just go screwy and revert back to 60Hz in 15 seconds or so.

Far from infallible to be sure, but most documents and spreadsheets do work, unless they have lots of special Office-specific features in them. A basic Excel spreadsheet and Word document are filtered quite well. I have Office 2003 on my Windows partition, but only use it if I have to. Otherwise, I use OpenOffice in both Windows and Linux. By the way, your spreadsheet converts to OpenOffice Calc format with no visible issues.
  6. Holy crap! How old is your monitor? I have a 7-yr-old 14-in that can show 1280x960 at 75Hz, not to mention 1024x768. Your monitor might be capable without Windows knowing it. Have you tried unchecking the box that says "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display"? Most monitors can go a little higher than Windows thinks they can.

Aw... Isn't reliance on Microsoft so adorable? I'm just kidding, but there are a few other programs out there that can view Excel spreadsheets. OpenOffice is a good example. I do congratulate you on this formula, Micawbar. It seems to be well-researched and accurate. Good show.

That would be Dolojan (pronounce Dolohan) I normally wouldn't say how to pronounce it but I seem to remember her introducing herself as Dolojan (pronounced Dolohan)
  9. If you use a PlayStation (or any other optical disc console for that matter) emulator with the original disc, that is completely legal. Other than that, Thuryl's right. Legal emulation pretty much is a myth.

  10. As a new user, I can't really comment on it having never played it. It is on my incredibly long list of RPGs to play though. I even have a copy of the PlayStation port that came bundled with FF4 somewhere.

  11. Nothing beats Sylak's Talking Skull. It always had amusing quotes, although they did get old rather quickly especially the "Hi! I'm a talking skull!", and he told you where all the Nether Arts spells could be found, which was quite handy. I'm with Alorael too. Pearlblossom was a nice addition. I always presumed that Jeff was going to include her in a quest and just forgot about her, sort of like the puzzle box. The young man in Shadow Valley Fort who's family was killed by Nero was a good addition as well, in my opinion. It helped to add depth and helped to ground it in the time period.

Edit: I'm sorry to be such a nit-picker, but I've been seeing it spelled incorrectly quite frequently on these boards and it's really starting to irk me. "Character" has 2 A's and 1 E. Please try to remember this.

    Dikiyoba.
Well, yes. But it has nothing to do with Assassination, as Taiko's post wished for it to.
That must be in A4 because I know murdering people in A1-3, even if there isn't anyone around, will make the town hostile.
  13. Not to mention Jeff himself. He doesn't even know what some of the things are for anymore, like the puzzle box. I agree though. All the little mysteries of Nethergate were great. I'll always love that game, especially since it was my introduction to Spiderweb. The little things that seemed like they were important, but actually weren't were a nice touch. I'm pretty sure that the wishes fish had no purpose other than to confuse. All the Sylak items were cool, and the finding those elusive Nether Arts spells. Seriously, I will always consider Nethergate to be one of the best RPGs ever and certainly the best Spiderweb game.
