Ineffable Wingbolt Øther
I feel kinda silly asking this... Is it possible to play BoE? I downloaded the open source code, and it seems like I may enjoy playing it, but I can't find an application to play it with. How do I do it? I have tried looking around the forums, but I can't find anything. If it is possible to play this game, I would like to know how. EDIT: Doh! I feel like an idiot. I completely skipped over the blades of Exile download option. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to play it once I actually download it.
Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel
In addition, queries about BoE probably don't belong in the Tech Support section.
Easygoing Eyebeast keira
Also, scenarios are available at http://truesite4blades.com (it has all of them except for a few early on that were lost).
Easygoing Eyebeast Triumph
I have a different question about "how to play," that I'll just poke into this topic: is it possible to use the arrow keys? I have a Macbook, and I downloaded the open-source version of BoE, and it works okay...except that it ignore the arrow keys completely. I can only move using the mouse. Is there something I can do about that?
Ineffable Wingbolt Øther
Is there a way to change the preferences in this game? If so, try that.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
On my PC, playing the Windows version of BoE, the arrow keys give movement in the four basic directions.
Easygoing Eyebeast Triumph
The preferences menu has no options that have to do with control, and there're no instructions with the game that give any instructions or list of key functions. I'm really puzzled.
Well-Actually War Trall Ishad Nha
All you can do is press one key at a time and see what happens. The Mac source code might give you some clues too. In the Windows source code the file boe.actions.cpp on line 1511 has a function "Boolean handle_keystroke(WPARAM wParam, LPARAM lParam)". This lists all the shortcuts. You can also use the numpad; just make sure to turn the Num Lock on/off (I forget which). 2,4,6, and 8 give the four basic directions, while 1,3,7, and 9 allow you to move diagonally. But, as I already mentioned, I have a Macbook, so none of those things help, unfortunately. Ah well. I'll survive without BoE. Still, it's awfully weird why the arrow wouldn't work. Easygoing Eyebeast The Mystic
I tried; sorry I couldn't be more helpful, though.
Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel
As previously mentioned, navigation is with the numeric keypad, not the arrow keys. I suppose that should probably be changed sometime, though, to support Macbook players... in which case I'd probably use the following mapping: Code: Left -> West Up -> North Down -> SouthRight -> East Home -> Northwest [Home is Fn-Left] End -> Southwest [End is Fn-Right] PgUp -> Northeast [Page Up is Fn-Up] PgDn -> Southeast [Page Down is Fn-Down] Allowing the player to select their own keys is fairly unlikely to be implemented... So, i'd say using this mapping is a good idea (on the other hand, i wasn't aware that the Mac version didn't use arrows movement ) Originally Posted By: Celtic Minstrel Allowing the player to select their own keys is fairly unlikely to be implemented... Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel
I wonder if Windows laptop users can move diagonally, then...

Easygoing Eyebeast Triumph
I guess my problem, then, must simply be the lack of numeric keypad. I think most laptops lack that, don't they? I just thought I remember playing some form of Exile back in the (on a desktop, admittedly) using the arrow keys. Well, whatever. Thanks for the comments!!! Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel
All the newer Mac laptops lack a numeric keypad. Most PC laptops that I've seen, though, have a virtual numeric keypad accessible with the Fn key. I'm not sure why Apple did that. (I'm pretty sure the old PowerBooks had a virtual numeric keypad too.)
Hatchling Cockatrice Slawbug
The standard vanilla MacBook that I am using right now has a virtual numeric keypad accessible with the function key. If the newest generation doesn't have it, that would be a surprise to me. I don't like it because the keys are not in perfect vertical alignment, but it is there. Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel
My own MacBook does not have one; I got it about a year ago. I haven't really looked at the newest generation of MacBooks yet.
Hatchling Cockatrice Slawbug
Mine is from late 2006. That's weird -- I can't think of any reason to remove it. Then again, this would not be the first time that Apple has removed functionality for no reason. (!@#$@#$%, iTunes 9!)
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
I've got a late-2007 MacBook and it doesn't appear to have keypad functionality.
Understated Ur-Drakon Celtic Minstrel
I know, it doesn't make any sense to have removed it, and yet it has clearly been removed.
