Well, i thought of some possibilities okf how to keep Greenfang, but they are unverified.

First, does Greenfang disappear when you defeat Shaila and cross the Gateway, because you can pick him up later.

Or if you can pass through the border (the one between the forsaken lands an ilyia province i meen) before doing the shaila quest - which i don't know if you can, since you have the papers - maybe by slaughtering all the shapers there, but for that considering the low level, you would need to cheat. Or maybe not - who knows.

And the third possible way is to simply create an artila and name it Greenfang! smile

And trust me, keeping Greenfang through the whole game is worth the trouble of even editing the scripts, since he/she can do about 100 damage pretty early and also opoisons everyone.

Wait! One of you two said he is dead after the shaila quest and one said he is not.

The Ratt: "From what it sounds like Greenfang would turn back, even if you did defeat all the shapers early and went through."

Well, but if you did that, you would not need to cross that zone anymore, would you? I mean, if you cleared it it would be green and you'd be able to pass directly to the next zone - although i findthat a little unbelievable, due to the linearity and plot, but still?

You can't take Greenfang past the gates without cheats. Period.

I tested this a year ago and don't remember the exact mechanisms, but I'm pretty sure an unrecruited Greenfang disappears either at the time you pass the gates, or shortly before that. And Greenfang will not go through the gates with you.

But, Slarty, Anarizzyth (sorry about spelling) brings up a point. If you can clear the zone by killing all the shapers then you could go out the other way, and go to the next zone without ever going through the Cairn Gates. But I doubt this since often to clear a zone you need to see the way to another zone.

Edit: Tested last theory. Does not work because the barracks that holds the lever that opens the gates does not open until the caravan comes through.

I was always curious about greenfang there, before she actually disappears and after completing the Shalia quest by getting her to the Shapers Greenfang kept triggering a script about being anxious or something when I passed the docks area. Was I missing some special encounter, like say go to a certain place and you find a dead Shalia with a note left by the shapers saying rebels beware or something? Never found out

Not just often, but almost always. There are very few exceptions.

So let's clarify a few things.

1. You CANNOT progress in the game without passing through the Cairn Gates.
2. Once you pass through the Gates, you can no longer recruit Greenfang.
3. If Greenfang is with you when you pass through the Gates, he leaves.

I usually trigger this message while I'm clearing the Docks zone before ever encountering Shaila. As such, Greenfang is nervous because it senses her for the first time and isn't entirely sure how to respond. That's the explanation that seems most sensible to me, and I think the message appearing after meeting Shaila is a goof up.

Edit: In fact, Dikiyoba just checked the Boiling Mudpits zone script. The same Greenfang-is-anxious message is there too, but for some reason never triggers.

Probably, but I've gone in that way first before and I don't remember it.

Hmm. I bet I've gone in through the mudpits to confront Shaila without Greenfang (but with one of my own artilas), then picked up Greenfang right before I walked Shaila to the docks. That's probably why I got the message when I shouldn't have.

Dikiyoba.
