Lockpicking[G5]

Recommended Posts

The cost in living tools doesn't decrease by one for each point of Mechanics you have. I'm not sure what the exact formula is, but with enough Mechanics the door will in fact open without cost.

—Alorael, who recommends either the spell Unlock or the terrible expense of a single living tool. Or you could get a few more pieces of equipment that boost Mechanics.

The relationship between living tools and mechanics is not linear. To unlock a door that requires 1 living tool can take an increase in mechanics of 1 to 8 or more levels depending upon the door's difficulty.

The doors in the Foundry Core are meant to be opened using the Core key and high difficulties.

Even if you cheat and have 30 mechanics skill, some doors will still require a living tool or two to open. Generally, these are doors that you can find a key to at some point (that one clawbug mine for a quest in the Storm Plains is one that comes to mind), but there could be exceptions to even that rule.

The unlock spell is available in Haria-Kel, the next area past the demo zones.

The items to boost mechanics are also past the demo:

Click to reveal..
Northeast Fens - Tinker's bauble +1 mechanics

Kratoa Stoneworks - Tinker's gloves +2 mechanics

East Shadow Road - Infiltrator's shield +1 mechanics, +1 leadership, +1 stealth

Middle Shadow Road -Infiltrator's tunic +1 mechanics, +1 leadership, +1 stealth

Mountain Crossroads and Travald's Crypt - Infiltrator's cloak +1 mechanics, +1 leadership, +1 stealth

Southwest Wastes - Infiltrator's charm +1 mechanics, +1 leadership, +1 stealth

Edit - The hardest difficulty doors appear to be quest reward doors in Gazaki-Uss that need 5 living tools with mechanics 16 to 17.

I don't remember exactly what he posted. Content not safe for minors, hate speech, incessant spamming, attacks on other members, and general and prolonged hatefulness can all get you banned. Basically, this community needs to be safe and comfortable for everyone, and if you can't manage that you either leave or are removed.

—Alorael, who thinks TM erred on the hateful side. Consistently. For years. The only reason he didn't get banned sooner because he was TM and everyone expected it from him. Well, that and his contributions to the community, which got him a lot of allowances.

People in general got away with a lot more back then, but even by the standards of the time TM was always pushing it. The funny thing is that the post that finally got him banned wasn't nearly as bad as many of the other things he'd posted before; it's just that Jeff happened to see it and personally decide that he'd had enough of him.
