Area difficulty levels

Is there any way to check (in or out of game) the relative difficulty level of available areas?  I'm fast getting sick of entering an area, dying to the first encounter, and then either assuming it's too hard and going elsewhere or repeating a few times to make sure it wasn't just bad luck.

That's how you know. Area difficulty is a combination of level and what you are playing. Some areas are easier for certain classes because your primary attack takes out enemies easier than others. Level determines whether you can hit or whether it is a hard areas you keep missing.

You can right-click on a creature and see its level, health and resistances. That way, I saw that the Iron Clawbugs in The Dry Wastes were much higher level than my fresh character.
