Articulate Vlish mynameismudd
I will use a guardian in Geneforge 2 but not sure if mechanics works like Geneforge 1. In the 1st game you don't gain exp from unlocking things. But in Geneforge 4 and 5 you do.
Easygoing Eyebeast Triumph
Pretty sure you gain experience when using Mech in G2.
Garrulous Glaahk Learned Noremac
Yeah, I think G1 is the only one that you don't gain EXP for. The upshot is that G1 is also the only one where skill point costs don't increase as you level up your skills, so it is easier to GET higher Mechanics. Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
I thought you gained experience for unlocking things only if you don't use living tools.
Burgeoning Battle Gamma ThricebornPhoenix
I've not been getting experience for anything mechanics-related (picking locks, disabling mines, de/activating power spirals) unless it's also some kind of event trigger. Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
There is also the adjustment for your level versus the level Jeff thought you should be so you maybe too high to get any.
Articulate Vlish Fluff
You do get exp for unlocking things in Geneforge 2, with or without living tools, but not if you use a key. For example, if you activate the pylon controllers in the Drypeak Mine, you get experience, but if you have the key, you get no experience, even if you have the required mechanics. Burgeoning Battle Gamma ThricebornPhoenix
There is also the adjustment for your level versus the level Jeff thought you should be so you maybe too high to get any. I just went through the first zone to check... and thoughtlessly grabbed the first key. Fortunately, there's a lock at the end that doesn't have a key. Six points in Mechanics was more than enough to pick it without any living tools. Result: no experience, and no message indicating that experience may have been obtained in other circumstances. Magnificent Ornk Kelandon
GF2 definitely gives experience for Mechanics-based solutions, in general. GF1 definitely doesn't. To the best of my knowledge, none of the GFs give a message if you're too high a level to get experience from something but otherwise would. So my guess is that Randomizer's explanation accounts for what went on in your case.
Burgeoning Battle Gamma ThricebornPhoenix
GF2 definitely gives experience for Mechanics-based solutions, in general. GF1 definitely doesn't. I should make clear that I am referring to G1. To the best of my knowledge, none of the GFs give a message if you're too high a level to get experience from something but otherwise would. I can verify that in G1 you receive a message for turning in a quest or killing something when your level is too high... (You're too high level to get experience from this.) Magnificent Ornk Kelandon
I can verify that in G1 you receive a message for turning in a quest or killing something when your level is too high... Fair enough. I don't recall the later ones doing this, but I may just not have paid attention. Either way, I think we've resolved the experience issue.
