After some consideration, I'm thinking about getting the Spiderweb Software Complete Pack on Steam. I honestly do not think I'll have enough time in this life to do them all, but I sure won't go hungry if I desire any old-school (modern term- tactical) RPGs.

 

After reading around in the forums, I noticed some of these old games can't be played in a window. I think I can deal with that, but do any of them have problems with the Steam overlay? At the very least, I need to be able to chat while doing a game.

don't think you can chat with others while playing Steamed SW-games (those which can't be played in window).

I don't know which games you're asking about, or whether these instructions are compatible with Steam, but these instructions might be helpful.

It's possible that it could work. Adding non-steam old SW games probably won't give you an overlay (just tested with BoA), since Steam uses OpenGL/DirectX detection to determine if it's a game or a menu or something. However, if it's purchased via Steam it should be coded in.

 

Hopefully someone can verify this.

One thing you can definitely do is alt-tab out of the game.

N:R can be played in a window though.

I just tested Avernum 5, which uses a different engine than N:R, but has the same engine as the older Geneforge games. The overlay does not work, but you can alt-tab out of the game, and Nalyd's guide to play Geneforge in a window will work too.

yea alt tabbing works although many times I couldn't get back to game (A5 and later) after getting out of there with alt tab so better save 1st and then use alt tab.
