Chittering Clawbug Avadon
Just got it. Glad to see the download was only 32.4MB. How did Jeff manage to compress it thus? Avernum EFTP was a gigantic 150MB.
Ineffable Wingbolt Mosquito---Slayer
Avernum 6 was about the same 35 MB or so for the windows as well, starting from Avadon these setups got much larger.
Chittering Clawbug Avadon
Well, after installation iOS reports that 104MB was used. This is a positive trend and I hope that Avadon 2's files can be even smaller as storage space is non expendable on iPads. Good job Jeff. Ineffable Wingbolt Mosquito---Slayer
Unfortunately Avadon 2 has the same engine as A:eftp and Avadon so going by the general trend of increase in size for each newer game, it will probably have a setup of 150 MB+. Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
The increased size is more graphics files.
Understated Ur-Drakon Earth
Games: A6: 102 Megs Avadon 1: 115 Megs AEFTP: 168 Megs Savegames: A6: 124 Megs (multiple saves) Avadon 1: 102 Megs (few saves) AEFTP: 41 Megs (6 saves)
Ineffable Wingbolt Mosquito---Slayer
Games: A6: 102 Megs Avadon 1: 115 Megs AEFTP: 168 Megs Really?, because this means that A6 isn't really smaller than Avadon, it's just been compressed much more efficiently in the setup, so it should probably be doable in the later games as well. Some types of data can be compressed more efficiently than others. The relative ratios of text/binary code/graphics/sounds could easily differ significantly between the different engines/games. I thought that the engines are similar enough, so that while there could be a difference it shouldn't be that huge, but I will take your word on this one as personally I know nothing about compressing apart from that it makes file sizes smaller. My guess would be that the new engine games (Avadon, AEFTP) have relatively more and/or higher resolution graphics. Browsing through the Avadon game folders, it appears that most of the graphics used by the game are in PNG or JPG formats (I'm assuming this is true for the other games as well, but I didn't actually look). PNG and JPG are compressed image formats, so that portion of the data won't benefit much from the compression (in fact, compressing already compressed data can actually sometimes make it get slightly larger). Ineffable Wingbolt Mosquito---Slayer
Avernum 6 has PNG as well as bitmap (not JPG), so I suppose that's the reason.
