A6 - Where can you store items?

Is there any place you can store items you want to keep but don't want to carry so that they don't disappear? Thanks.

Items won't disappear anywhere, so pick somewhere convenient.

 

—Alorael, who should add that enough items in one area can cause problems. The limit is quite high, though, so unless you decide to put all junk in Avernum in a pile you should be fine.

I drop all my keepers in the tele-port post room at the castle. It's convenient and there is a merchant right around the corner when I need to sell things to raise money.

I always stored everything in the Portal Keep. You go through there every time you use a portal, making it the most central location for easy access in the game. I stored things in categorized piles spread out far enough that I'd only see enough items at once to not have to scroll down any in the "on the ground" list.

I prefer Portal Keep, as well, for the reasons Synergy describes. Although it's really only after completing the Eastern Gallery that inventory space becomes an issue; before that I just store all my excess junk in my mage's backpack.

Isn't there a 200 item limit for items on the ground until they mysteriously vanish?

There is a limit, yes. Just to be safe, I wouldn't drop more than 100 items in the same map area. A stack of the same item (like 50 healing potions) counts as a single item.

I find that the best place to store items is in a place you can reach easily and/or return to often. Due to the nature of the teleportation systems used in the Avernum series as a whole, a location at or near the main hub is perhaps the most logical and convenient place to set up a cache.

Thanks for the inputs. I didn't try just dropping stuff on the ground. i put two items in the desk of the commander of the central portal. they disappeared. As i vaguely recall in previous versions of the game there were specific areas that were safe.

In Exile there were only a few rooms that saved items. That hasn't been true since Blades of Exile, though.

Also the portmaster in Portal Keep now buys items so you can sell your excess without going to the Castle or a town.

Last time I tried this was in Avernum 4. Very bad. Wall started disappearing. Items still recoverable after problem occurs. Walls reappeared.

Using the backtostart cheat can sometimes cause items to disappear, but if that happens you'll notice it pretty quickly because usually all the items in every container in the game will disappear.

Yes. Never use backtostart -- it just isn't worth the risk.

Also, if you start to put to many items around the portal keep for your liking, you could store some items around any portal you have activated, and just keep ones you would think you would like to look at more around the keep.
