Well-Actually War Trall Delicious Vlish
If you equip the Thirsting Knife, (awesome weapon for shaper types and casters, +2 creation strength, +1 dex) and other vampiric items, and then you go and cast, say, Dominate, you will drain life out of your victim even though you are not doing any damage to them. So you can get a devoted servant and (depending on the vampiric items equipped) a noticeable bit of healing. It shouldn't work, but it does. Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
Yeah, this has happened since at least Geneforge 4 and maybe earlier. It's an incredibly inefficient way to heal yourself, though.

In G5, you can pull in some considerable hit points. I can't figure out how the game is determining how you are leaching so much life. It feels... Buggy. The healing from vampiric abilities has never been proportional to the damage you inflict. In G4, you'd rarely get more than single-digit healing, which is why you didn't notice it. In G5, the healing's probably just been ramped up across the board so you notice it more.
Well-Actually War Trall Delicious Vlish
So, it is time to load up on the vapiric items, thirsting gloves, etc, and work up a shoot and scoot character who specialises in batons. Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
You get a percentage chance to drain life for all spells cast on opponents so if you are getting a significant amount back then wrack, essence shackles, acid shower, etc. all make decent attacks while you let creations and charmed enemies do the fighting. Burgeoning Battle Gamma Desmarestia
Wait, I though Vampiric Touch didn't work with batons. On a related note, spines deal damage in response to some ranged magical attacks (like the pacification vlish whammy, for lack of a better word). That doesn't make sense to me either. Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Spines do damage if the vlish attack is listed as physical damage.
Burgeoning Battle Gamma Desmarestia
Really? Glaahk and Gazer melee attacks both inflict magical damage, but spines hurt them too. Edit: I think ab_abil_type has something to do with it.
