  1. I think it's a good review. I like that you've highlighted the things players like in these games -- character construction, tactics/strategic play, interesting bosses -- and were still kind enough to give the graphics 7/10 ! Quote: (G5) is entertaining enough to merit multiple playthroughs.... put skill points into your combat skills. I agree that much of the replay value comes in the factional choices / story choices; I guess I'd also stress that some of the replay value for me comes from the different strategies available for those characters emphasizing shaping, magic, or combat.
  2. I've also tried to put the reputation numbers into the walkthrough, if that helps what you're trying to do, although I haven't extracted them and listed them separately.
  3. Quote: well the map could have an option to put/remove dots on the map, and also dots with diferent colots. I think that's a good idea, Fen, even if a bit quickly typed up. Adding the ability to *comment* on the maps might take a bit of coding, but adding the ability to simply add coloured dots shouldn't take that much effort, I wouldn't think, and would add serious functionality. Especially the first time through a game, when one isn't really sure of the lore requirements for an area, I can see how this would be really useful.
  4. I think he wanted dynamic quest updates, so that progress would be monitored. "You've killed eight of twelve roamers!" It's not especially necessary -- most of us aren't terribly troubled by having to count twelve roamers killed, or the like. On the other hand, it would be ridiculously easy to implement updates in the dialogue box, given that the game is already keeping track of those variables. The downside is that the extra text would prove annoying to some gamers. A journal quest-tracking implementation probably wouldn't be terribly involved, either, but would be more work than a dialogue implementation.
  5. Quote: Say it with me: "Avernum is not WoW." No!! I've been playing all this time just so I can get my 1337 mount! Aaaaargh! ....Next thing I know, you'll tell me the general forum isn't oldschool Barrens chat.
  6. Quote: Yes I know your suggestion is that I close my mouth, I know it's what you suggest. I don't want and don't see why someone need take care to my late answers, as standard, don't read if you don't care, that's so simple, don't you agree on this? Ça m'est égal, vent. If you attack those who are trying to help, you'll soon find only hostile responses. Maybe that's why Slarty spoke as he did? Quote: The graphic style, who find them cute? You? Common be serious Yes, spiderweb games have outdated graphics. Everyone who plays them cares more about the gameplay than about the graphics. No, not everyone thinks they're ugly: actually, some of them are quite cute, like the cryoa breath attack in geneforge when the critter is facing forwards. As long as we're voting, I hope Jeff continues to concentrate his efforts on good gaming, rather waste too much time on difficult eye candy. As to movement, I actually like the A5 system just fine, although I found the initial implementation in A4 tedious. I don't hate the old two-tiered system, though. What's important to me is that the keyboard options be maintained as much as possible: while I understand that players of Fable-style games expect mouse-driven movement, I'm guessing a fair share of Jeff's user-base, like me, also appreciates keyboard options.

I honestly don't think vent was trying to impose his views; I think he was trying to add his thoughts to a discussion that for him is new. Vent: Slarty's reacting the way he is in part because you're resurrecting an old thread, and it feels like you're beating a dead horse (s'acharner à rien). It's bad forum style to resurrect a long-dead topic.
  8. Quote: And GIFTZombies Now you're just making stuff up.
  9. You need two access crystals to get in. For spoilers, see the walkthrough.

  11. When I google "maestro card," it tells me it's part of the mastercard family. Have you tried putting it through as a mastercard? edit: if that doesn't work, I know that Spiderweb accepts paypal, and paypal seems to accept maestro, or at least the uk version of paypal does. Two steps is more trouble than one, but the games really are very good.
  12. Quote: I'd had my tool taken out, just realized. Rawal will still give you quests even so, as long as you don't rub his face in it. *Tell* him you're no longer his puppet, and you can't do any more quests for him. The only instance in which the fact of having the tool removed is a problem would be if you wish to experience the Rawal-faction ending of the game.
  13. Quote: And for the comments about keys not well placed... Now, now, I didn't say they weren't well-placed, I said that guessing which keys corresponded to which letters on an illegible public keyboard -- when I'm used to a qwerty keyboard -- was a nightmare on wheels.
  14. Yep -- I'd asked the question before he posted that. I feel a little vindication for the time when France was minitel crazy -- they were these little ubiquitous terminal things, before most folks had cell phones -- and you could no longer find a printed phone book for love or money. Hardest thing *ever* on a public terminal with the keys in the wrong place -- from my anglo perspective, of course-- to navigate on the darned things. We're lucky we didn't cause plane crashes calling the tower at Orly airport, when all we wanted was the baggage department...
  15. Quote: I don't think he cares what your faction leanings are. Everybody seems to get his quests. Yes, as long as you don't point out that you've had your control tool removed, Rawal will happily continue giving you quests, if you ask for them.
  16. Quote: It's a suggestion a little weird... Vent, are you French? (C'est une idée un peu bizarre...)
  17. I did a quick web search, and it seems as if actually removing or renaming the scheduler itself breaks quicken. But the quicken scheduler seizes resources which other applications need to function properly (ie, the keyboard.) The best advice I've found is simply not to schedule any updates or reminders in quicken until Intuit fixes their software. Presumably, Intuit *will* fix the problem in a future release, because they're wreaking havoc on lots of apps, including Apple ones.
  18. I remember the first programming class I took, in high school, in I think '84? The computer took up a whole room in the building, and it wasn't as smart as my old palm pilot. We programmed in line basic. (Gosub 300!) I remember turning in a verb-object sort of game as a project (get sword! go north! kill dragon!) Silly, unsophisticated, and everyone loved it.
  19. Quote: I prefer ornks. Less likely to be able to kill me if it goes rogue. And yummier than mules, too, if you find yourself in a blockaded province. But be careful: there are rumours some of 'em talk back. I've never heard of a talking roamer.
  20. Quote: Has anyone put together a location list for the charms, or thought about doing so? Erm, I've included 'em in the walkthrough, but I'm not guaranteeing they're all there. Let me know if you find one missing? I've not yet typed in the challenge areas -- sammon drops the omnicharm. Otherwise, they should be there? edit: oh, bizarre mis-post, but I'm not mod, so no deletion. Bah!
  21. Drakons are still at least *taller* than sliths. And they don't try to poke you with three-pointed spears... <-- icon for size comparison
  22. I've only found the two (see walkthrough), and randomizer's canister list only mentions two. edit: Oh, I'm wrong: I'd forgotten about the canisters in Inner Gazaki-Uss. Randomizer mentions 'em, too, but there's a line-break which confused my poor under-caffeinated brain... So yes, at the council endgame, in inner g-u: > ne The room with two eyebeasts contains many crafting materials and a canister of create gazer. > Behind the four wingbolts, which are recruitable (with leadership), there are canisters of create drakon and of firebolt. The catch, of course, is that Ghaldring's faction might lose out, as I'm not sure they ever have access to inner g-u?
  23. You need to talk to Genta. You may also need leadership 7; at the very least, the conversation is optimal if you have leadership 7, and may not be possible without it. You need to intimidate her by threatening the others.
  24. Quote: Regardless, its annoying and she should stop. Oh, Ackrovan, it's just such a bad idea to criticize other people like that. We all do things sometimes that bug other people, and our job is to root those things out in ourselves first, not so much to point the finger at others' mistakes. The first question maybe we should ask ourselves before posting something is, "will this be helpful?" Repeating a criticism after someone has already apologized is really... not so much helpful.
  25. Quote: I'm a bit surprised by your rejection of vlishes; they're among the most cost-effective critters you can shape. Alorael, how the heck do you keep vlishes alive? In g5 I admit I tend towards the fire and battle trees (cryoa-->drayk-->kyshakk; war trall), and so have limited experience with the magic tree, but the few vlishes I've tried die early.
