  1. "I am your worst nightmare" is different from "I, who am your worst nightmare," though. Very different, in fact, given that "I am your worst nightmare" is such a commonly uttered line that it's a cliché while "I, who am your worst nightmare" is awkward and pretentious enough that apparently no one uses it.

    Dikiyoba would volunteer to be your worst nightmare were it not for the fact that Dikiyoba is only frightening enough to qualify as your fourth worst nightmare. Perhaps third worst, on a good day.

  2. Just want to emphasize, again, that you can submit TWO answers for each question, and you will receive points for BOTH of them. The one person who has already sent me a set of answers with only one answer per question, can resubmit if they would like.

    Aw, you're so nice.

    Dikiyoba.

  3. Final results are finished, at long last. (I'm sure I made at least one mistake, but the winner is ahead by a large enough margin for any mistakes on my part not to matter.)

    I hope everyone had fun. I enjoyed seeing all of your answers. Hopefully the bonus points and the few judgment calls I had to make aren't too obnoxious. (I chose the bonus point answers before the round began, so I couldn't be biased the way I might be if I were choosing a best or most creative answer, but maybe no bonuses or a bonus point for best answer would be more balanced and/or fun.)

    Dikiyoba will leave the next round up to someone else.

  4. I do it because I've even doing it for over a decade now. It feels strange not to end posts in what is grammatically known as the third-person ramblative.

    —Alorael, who has occasionally gone through archived and watched the evolution of his signature by random sampling. He does it very differently now than he did when first posting.

    The next time you read through your old SW topics, you should make a thread about your signature evolution (well, unless the old posts are too embarrassing to link to).

    Dikiyoba knows how hard to keep a posting gimmick relevant, interesting, and not too much of a burden. You should be applauded for keeping it up for over a decade now.

  5. I suppose I should officially close submissions, shouldn't I? :\ Submissions are now closed.

    I have preliminary scores done, but I need help confirming a few SW-related answers. If you can confirm the existence of any of the following entities (and are not the original respondent), please post to let me know.

    01. Character from any Exile or Avernum game: Remy

    03. Weapon or equipment from any Spiderweb game: Rusty shield

    04. Monster type from any Spiderweb game: Rat people (I have no idea), Red clawbug (I know there is a redshell clawbug)

    12. Character from any Geneforge game: Rema

    In addition, Dikiyoba just sent a PM to Ouroboros and Iffy. Please send Dikiyoba a response as soon as you can. Thanks.

  6. Rules: At the beginning of the round, a random letter will be selected. You can then create and submit your answer card. For each category, you may put down up to two answers where the first letter of the first word begins with the chosen letter. You may not use the same answer (or a slight variation on an answer) for multiple categories. You may not use superflous adjectives in your answer. Articles (a, an, the) do not count as part of the answer.

    At the end of the round, I will look at the answer cards. If two or more people provide the same answer to a category, that answer will be thrown out. If someone provides an answer that doesn't fit the category or breaks one of the rules, I will throw it out. Most answers will be worth one point. Answers that use the round's letter as the first letter in multiple words will recieve two points. Some categories have bonus points available. Whoever gets the most points wins. When I announce the winner, I will post the answer cards with the scoring breakdown.

    To submit your answer card, copy the following list of categories, write in your answers, and send me the whole thing in a PM titled "Answer card, round 2." I will only accept one answer card from each participant, so fill it out completely and make sure you are happy with your answers before you turn it in. Answer cards will be accepted from now until this time on Friday the 13th. I will calculate and posts the scores as soon as I can.

  8. Not entirely clear, I think. :)

    It's very clear that the party disappeared. It's not explicitly said that they found a route to the surface, so you're free to come up with your own reason for their disappearance if you wish, but the game does push you toward the escape-to-the-surface conclusion--enough so that I knew that Avernum 1 featured a major quest involving finding a route to the surface just by playing Avernum 2. And Avernum 3 literally has signs in the starting town describing what happened to the previous PCs. It's hard to get much clearer than that short of actually meeting the PCs and asking questions about their lives for an hour.

    Dikiyoba.

  9. As I recall, the first Avernum trilogy made reference to previous PCs, but only in the same vague, elliptical way as Avadon 2 does. If I remember correctly, the canon was that the Avernum 1 party vanished (rumored to have escaped to the surface), and the Avernum 2 party stayed in Avernum, doing good deeds while the Avernum 3 party was on the surface.

    So it's not all that odd that we get only the vaguest answers about the canon for the Avadon 1 PCs. It just would've been fun to see some of them again. Well, mainly Nathalie, really.

    Avernum 2 was very clear on the fate of the PCs from Avernum 1. Many of the NPCs talk about 'the great heroes' and comment on their sudden disappearance, and speculate on how they must have found a way back to the surface. Similarly, Avernum 3 is very clear on the fate of the PCs from Avernum 2. There's a plaque in their honor in Fort Emergence that states they are still serving in mainland Avernum--but since the Avernum 3 PCs' job is on the surface, they don't get to interact with the old Avernum 2 adventurers. The fate of the Avernum PCs is canon in a way that the Avadon 1 PCs don't get.

    Dikiyoba definitely wishes there was concrete evidence of the fate of the Avadon 1 Hands (and for that matter, to meet one or two Hands in Avadon proper, so it feels fully staffed and it's not weird when you suddenly meet a few Hands late in the game who know all about you even though you've never heard anything about them).

  10. Also, I have often wondered about Jeffs cavescape idea. Could large caves form and remain stable as a planet of certain geological/geochemical composition cools down?

    Earth has some pretty frickin' huge cave systems (as in hundreds of miles long), and we certainly haven't found them all yet. Not as big as Exile/Avernum, perhaps (well, maybe as big as the second Avernum trilogy caves), but big enough. It's the lack of magical glowing lichen that prevents large lifeforms from evolving deep within caves.

    Dikiyoba.

  11. There are a couple of pieces of dialogue that imply that tinkermages aren't literally building the turrets from scratch mid-combat, but that they carry around kits of some sort that they can just fold out and set up.

    In addition, there's that loading screen art that depicts a couple of soldiers and a tinkermage carrying a bolt flinger about to be ambushed by Wyldrylm rebels.

    Dikiyoba.

  12. Should we say that "What if no Newton?" really means "What if no Newton and no moon?" because that's the more interesting question?

    That would just get derailed into a discussion about what it would mean for Earth to have minimal tides, shorter days, and a wobbling axis that results in extreme seasonal and climatic variation. Heck, considering how close early Homo sapiens came to extinction already, a more difficult climate may have pushed us over the edge. And that's assuming the history of life on Earth wasn't changed so much that hominids could evolve in the first place!

    Dikiyoba wanted to make a joke about the lack of werewolves, but hypothetical moonless climate change ruined that. Climate change ruins everything.

  13. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like the fact that on Normal and Casual, the game, as the description for normal says, "starts out quite easy but comes a challenge as you get close to the end." I played the whole game on Casual, and it was perfectly balanced up until the final Corruption quest, where every fight became a huge deal (even the trash mobs) and I was suddenly taking loads more damage. I had two to three times more downed characters in those last few zones than the entire rest of the game. Why? I wanted to finsh the game to see how it ended, not to spend 5 minutes on every single fight. If I wanted challenging fights, I would be playing on a higher difficulty, or doing the optional boss fights. Which is a real shame because, again, the difficulty was really good up until that point. Battles were relatively interesting without being tough or drawn out. There were some enemies that were stronger and some that were weaker, enough information about those enemies to determine who would be strong and who would be weak, and enough freedom to be able to seek out greater or lesser challenges when that's what I was in the mood for. Except for those last two quests, new main quests didn't suddenly mean a huge jump in difficulty. But then you get to those quests and the game becomes tedious and unfun. So close, and yet so far.

    Dikiyoba.

  14. Spiderweb Software characters by alignment? Sure, I'll bite.

    Trajkov is Chaotic Good verging on neutral, since he flouts every Shaper law, takes power for himself, and attempts to overthrow the Shaper Empire... but does it in part out of concern for serviles, and rewards you and the Takers if you help him. Agent Greta is definitely Chaotic Good. Support for creation rights, even when it gets her cast out of Shaper school, and causes a war to break out. Miranda is probably Neutral Evil, but I don't remember her from Avadon 1 very well.

    Dikiyoba isn't sure how creation species can have an alignment. For every rogue vlish, there is one tightly under Shaper or rebel control.

  15. WARNING: This thread contains information about modifying your game files. If you modify your game, it may change in ways you don't expect or want. These modifications are not designed or supported by Spiderweb Software. Use at your own risk.

    Tired of having all your companions be pink and green? Having trouble finding the buttons for secret doors? Want to create color atrocities of your own? Then this is the guide for you!

    Basic info and disclaimer:

    Much of the game's information is stored within the text files in the Scripts folder. This allows for a fair amount of modification to the game. However, this can easily cause the game to freeze upon loading or otherwise make the game unplayable. Change scripts at your own risk. Spiderweb does not support modified games. Make a backup copy of a script before you attempt to edit it. Attempting to edit items, abilities, or text is complicated and risky, and for this reason this guide is limited to simple color changes only. I have a copy of the game for Windows bought directly from Spiderweb Software. I have attempted to provide instructions for Windows versions of the game bought from Steam or GOG. I would be most grateful if someone could provide instructions for finding the Scripts folder on a Mac (and any other platform-specific information). Once you find the scripts, editing should be identical no matter the platform or where you bought the game. I have no idea whether you can edit the version from the Mac App Store.

    If for some reason you need to restore the scripts to the original version but don't have a backup of them, you can download a clean copy of the game from Spiderweb Software's homepage. This should not mess up your registration. In the extremely unlikely event that it does and re-entering the original key doesn't work, contact Spiderweb Software for a new key. But realistically, you will never have to do this. (Be extra cautious if you bought this game from Steam, because getting an unmodified download of the game may be harder. But moving a game downloaded from Spiderweb Software to the Steamapps folder should be doable. It's much better to have backups, though!)

    Where to find the scripts:

    To find the Scripts folder on Windows, either right-click on an Avadon 2 icon and select "Open file location" to get to the main Avadon 2 folder. From there, open the Avadon 2 Files folder. The Scripts folder will be there. Or, if you bought the game directly from Spiderwb Softare, go into Program Files to Spiderweb Software to the Avadon 2 folder. If you bought the game from GOG, it will probably be in a similar location. If you bought the game from Steam, go Program File > Steam > Steamapps > common (or possibly under your registration name, depending on how you installed it) > Avadon 2. If you want to adjust the colors of your companions, the file you need is "av2itemschars." If you want to make secret buttons more obvious, the file you need is "av2objsmisc." Make a copy of that file, and put it somewhere safe. Newer versions of Windows might not let you make any changes to the scripts. Make sure you are logged into Windows as an administrator account. If that doesn't work, you can usually move the file somewhere else (like to the Documents folder), edit it there, and then move it back.

    Removing or editing the palette swap from a companion Hand:

    Open the file "av2itemschars" and search for their name to find their coding. For instance, this is Yoshiria's code.

    begindefinecreature 7;
    cr_name = "Yoshiria";
    cr_graphic_template = 275;
    cr_scaling = 95;
    cr_graphic_coloradj = 2;
    cr_sound_when_slain = 41;

    The only call we are interested in is "cr_graphic_coloradj = 2;" This is the call that makes her green. To remove it entirely, either delete the line entirely or comment it out by putting two forward slashes in front (so that it now reads as "//cr_graphic_coloradj = 2;"). (The game ignores anything preceded by two forward slashes.) If you want to make her a different color, change the 2 to a different number. Possible values and their effect are listed later.

    This is Yoshiria's code with the color adjustment removed:

    begindefinecreature 7;
    cr_name = "Yoshiria";
    cr_graphic_template = 275;
    cr_scaling = 95;
    //cr_graphic_coloradj = 2;
    cr_sound_when_slain = 41

    This is Yoshiria's code with a color adjustment that will make her slightly darker (to distinguish her from the PC, if the player chooses a female Shadowwalker):

    begindefinecreature 7;
    cr_name = "Yoshiria";
    cr_graphic_template = 275;
    cr_scaling = 95;
    cr_graphic_coloradj = 16;
    cr_sound_when_slain = 41

    That's all there is to it. Repeat for any companion you wish to change the colors of. The most realistic palette swaps are 16 (to darken the graphic slightly) and 32 (to lighten the graphic slightly). This will make the companion slightly different from a PC (and sometimes NPC) of the same class and gender without being too obvious.

    Adding a palette swap to make secret buttons more visible:

    Open the file "av2objsmisc" and search for "Secret Door" to find the code for the secret buttons. Note that there are two different versions, one for east-facing walls and one for south-facing walls. The original code looks like this:

    begindefineobject 202;
    import = 90;
    ob_object_type = 11;
    ob_name = "Secret Door";
    ob_graphic_template = 7;
    ob_graphic_sheet = 6;
    ob_base_icon_num = 6;
    ob_default_script = "secdoor";

    begindefineobject 203;
    import = 91;
    ob_object_type = 11;
    ob_name = "Secret Door";
    ob_graphic_template = 7;
    ob_graphic_sheet = 6;
    ob_base_icon_num = 7;
    ob_default_script = "secdoor";

    To add a palette swap, add the line "ob_graphic_coloradj = 64;" immediately before the line "ob_default_script = "secdoor";" Remember to do so for both versions of the button. The new code should look like this:

    begindefineobject 202;
    import = 90;
    ob_object_type = 11;
    ob_name = "Secret Door";
    ob_graphic_template = 7;
    ob_graphic_sheet = 6;
    ob_base_icon_num = 6;
    ob_graphic_coloradj = 64;
    ob_default_script = "secdoor";

    begindefineobject 203;
    import = 91;
    ob_object_type = 11;
    ob_name = "Secret Door";
    ob_graphic_template = 7;
    ob_graphic_sheet = 6;
    ob_base_icon_num = 7;
    ob_graphic_coloradj = 64;
    ob_default_script = "secdoor";

    This will add a palette swap to the secret button graphic to make it stand out more. In this case, the value 64 will invert all the colors in the graphic, making it extremely obvious (and pretty ugly as well). If this is too much for you, you can experiment with other values. The values and their effects are listed below.

    List of graphic adjustments

    1 - Swap red and blue

    2 - Swap green and blue

    4 - Swap red and green

    8 - Convert the graphic to grayscale

    16 - Darken the graphic (sometimes hard to see)

    32 - Lighten the graphic (sometimes hard to see)

    64 - Invert the colors

    128 - Convert the graphic to grayscale (again)

    256 - Tint the graphic red

    512 - Tint the graphic green

    Multiple adjustments can be added together to get different effects. The value 257 (tint the graphic red and swap red and blue) will tint a character blue, for instance.

    Dikiyoba wishes you good luck, and happy adjusting.

  16.

    A sandbox game about surviving and building bases that updates and adds new content frequently. The player is all alone in a randomized world. (There are scattered villages, but the villagers aren't human. They'll also run into homes as evening approaches, leaving you to face the night alone.) You wander through biomes (such as plains, forests, and swamps) collecting resources. Anything and everything is a potential resource: dirt, stone, plants, monster parts. In order to survive, you need to craft tools, weapons, and armor, which degrade when used, so crafting and inventory management is a big part of the game. The world also has huge caves to explore, and swarms of monsters to defeat. If your armor breaks while you are fighting monsters and you don't have backup pieces or the ability to run away, you are basically dead. You can fight monsters using fire, but that destroys items and can easily spread out of control to destroy vast swathes of trees and vegetation (lightning strikes can also cause out-of-control-fires). Some neutral mobs can be tamed by feeding them, after which they will follow you around and fight for you. Once you progress far enough into the game, you can open a few portals to other worlds. One of the potential enemy types are pigmen that are neutral to the player until the player hurts one, at which point every pigman in the area will attack the player.
