  1. THE PEARL: You are ordered to execute someone. Who is it? Did he/she deserve it? Do you succeed? Do you even obey the order? Is this how the scenario starts, or ends, or does it happen somewhere in the middle? All these questions and more are to be answered by - YOU! To enter the Pearl Contest, you need to design a scenario that includes the above plot point. The context in which this happens is up to you. It can be a moral dilemna, a tragic event, or the impetus for something great, or something else entirely. The more central this event is to the story, and the more unique your version of this basic idea is, the better. For clarification: "Execution" here means more than just "There are some pesky goblins nearby. Kill them." but does not necessarily have to be an official noose/guillotine affair with a trial and everything. The deadline is the end of September. Judging will be done by discussion. The primary concern is the quality of the scenario, though how original the approach to the Pearl itself is and how integral it is to the story will also be a factor. Both BoE and BoA scenarios will be eligible, though they may or may not compete directly against each other. Entries are to be sent to tomwatts (at) berkeley (dot) edu. What are you waiting for? GO!
  2. Eh? I made no comments about the relative quality of Quint, I just pointed out that it's quite different in style to Emulations. And it is. Quint has a lot more secret passage searching, outdoor exploring, combat, etc.
  3. Emulations and Quint have very little in common. But definitely play Roots.
  4. Spears is not as big as AtG, but it's still huge. And it also has a lot of puzzles. Just so you know. Forsaken And SotS are indeed very good, though maybe not what you're looking for right now. I'd also throw in the one that comes between them, Brotherhood of the Hand. Chains has a certain amount of similarity to Election.
  5. Depends on a few things. If I make a new scenario it'll be BoE, because that's what I prefer to play. IIRC, you like the Avernum engine better, so that won't be a factor for you. Aside from that, BoE is probably quicker and easier, if you just want to tell a story. If you want to do anything particularly special or technical, BoA will probably save you a lot of frustrating wonky workarounds. And there's always the consideration that at this point a new BoA scenario will get played by more people, and thus get you more adulation.
  6. If no traits are specifically mentioned, I'd say don't go with any. It won't make much difference, anyway, because before long - Oh, I'd better keep my mouth shut. Trouble with reading CSR is so many people post gigantic spoilers. EDIT: Good to see you're getting back into BoE, BTW.
  7. Emulations is a good choice, for the first half at least. After that it becomes fairly puzzle-intensive, which may not work for you. I recommend Revenge and Areni if you haven't played them yet, but then, I would. Also, Roots.
  8. 1=2 is a lousy opinion. If your opinion is that 1=2 is not a lousy opinion, then by inference, that is a lousy opinion.
  9. There is too such a thing as a bad opinion! If your opinion is that 1=2, it's a pretty lousy opinion. To clarify, Kel, what I've heard about Bahss's story hasn't impressed me, and what I've heard about LP's gameplay hasn't impressed me. But that does not necessarily mean that they are bad scenarios or even that I wouldn't enjoy them. I just felt compelled to seperate my opinion from TM's there.
  10. It's quite true that it's hard to judge a scenario on what you've been told about it, and it's also quite true that you'll never please everybody. If it's the scenario that you really want to make, go for it and ignore what everyone else says. PS: Kel, be fair.
  11. That is too complicated. Or rather, it's not too complicated, but it is entirely too indirect. Solve the big problem by doing fiddly, incidental stuff. Nah. 'Course, it's your scenario and all we know of it is those few sentences you've given us, but it doesn't sound very inspiring to me either. Not trying to be harsh, but probably it's better that you get this now rather than when you release the thing.
  12. Finding the "win" paths can be hard though, so make sure you have back-up save files to go back to.
  13. He'd be better off checking the Comprehensive Scenario Rankings . However, a lot of the best scenarios are pretty tough for beginners, and some may just not be his style. There's a lot of variety in size, style, difficulty, etc, so it would be easier to recommend if we knew what you're looking for.
  14. Nethergate, which came next, was released in 1999, so that sounds about right.

  16. I'm still a gamer... I'm just a gamer who isn't playing games at the moment. Seriously, I really do mean to get a computer and play all these scenarios that have been made since I moved, and maybe even make a scenario of my own. I just don't care about Jeff's games any more.
  17. Blades has spoiled me. I don't think I'll even bother playing the A4 demo. If I had a wishlist, it would be something like: 1) Actual characters. 2) Storylines that are complex without being complicated. 3) Combat that is vaguely challenging/interesting. But I don't really care.
  18. Great effort! You could try emailing Jeremy Maddock for the Isle of War scenarios. He also made Mountain Quest, so the address in that readme may work. Then again, chances are it's out of date by now... still, might be worth a shot.
  19. Richard White Games. Seriously, I have trouble understanding why anyone is suprised.

No, I shouldn't. I don't enjoy them even close to enough to make a purchase worthwhile. They're mainly just loads of fighting glued together with crummy or non-existant storylines. Geneforge was good, though.

You'll notice that Zeviz referred specifically to the Blades games in the next paragraph, so I think it's safe to assume he wasn't including them in that statement. Mind, I still prefer the Exile Trilogy to the Avernum Trilogy. Never registered any games from either, though.

When I read this, my brain nearly exploded, as I thought you were referring to the thread I linked to.
  23. I'd be all for it. I've got a bunch of cool ideas, but not the time/determination to make them happen. In the unlikely event that someone felt like taking one of my 'blueprints' and making it into an actual scenario, I'd be quite flattered.
