  1. Quote: Quote: —Alorael, who would like to point out that Avernum's Empire managed to maintain absolute power over an entire world for centuries at least without shaping. Being able to make an army instead of conscripting one is nice, but it's not essential. Shouldn't the citizens be happy they don't have to fight and die themselves? There is the whole Avernum defeating them thing which makes them not impossible to overthrow. People can't be that mad at them otherwise they would have revolted. And also, they assinated the tyrant emperor. That kind of takes the invincibility the Shapers have away from the Avernum Empire. The Empire was never actually fully defeated by Avernum. ** Spoilers ** In the first game, the Avernites managed to assassinate the emporer. Big deal, he was worthless anyway. In the second, well, the Avernites stopped the flow of fresh troops, assassinated another major figure, and managed to get the vahnatai to win for them. So far as we know, the Empire still had one hell of a lot of soldiers above ground. In the third, they made peace. ** Spoilers **
  2. Quote: Why would the Trakovites oppose the destructive qualities of shaping (which are already outweighed by it's beneficial ones) and not oppose the highly destructive powers of magic? From what I can tell, magic isn't nearly the be-all and end-all that shaping is, nor as powerful as it is in other universes like that of Avernum. While magic is certainly very effective, there don't seem to be any "summon huge drakons" or "start a big freakin' plague" spells. Really, the abolition of magic would be a little like banning all firearms, except that guns can't heal you or make you stronger.
  3. From an entirely story-related perspective, is there any difference between the Servile and human characters? I just finished with an Infiltrator and I want to know if the Servile will offer any differences in terms of roleplaying oppurtunity.
  4. Unfortunately, it won't launch. Not that I'm in any position to complain, seeing as it hasn't actually been released.
  5. I'm not sure if its even fully uploaded, but it appears to be on the FTP site. (even if the main page hasnt been updated yet.)
  6. Perhaps this is in Geneforge 4 (or even in previous Geneforges, I can't really remember), but I'd like to have some skills other than Leadership factor into conversation checks. I'm thinking something along the lines of convincing a shaper to let you try fixing something by impressing him with knowledge of Mechanics. Or being able to argue your point better against someone if you have higher intelligence. I'd also like to see some more choices in terms of weaponry. Spears that reach further than regular melee weapons, maybe big heavy mauls that stun people. That would be really nice.

Also the characters movement is wierd b/c they just stand there and magically teleport to the nearest square while moveing. AVN5 should have more actions for characters like heal yourself, or mounts. Also, Spiderwebsoftware should combine the Genefore engine and the Avernum engine even MORE Example: When you move around in the game, you actually MOVE. (like in Geneforge) Also when u wear armor or weapons, you should see them on the characteres. And you should be able to summon kobolds and Basilisks (at high levels) PS: whats the level cap for avernum 4??? You don't need walking animations, nor do you need a paper doll engine. They look nice, but I'd be more interested in interesting gameplay. I don't see the need for mounts...especially with the way the world is set up now, with no division between towns and outdoor sections. What I'd like to see is some more interesting combat options for melee warriors- I liked the way you could slow enemies running past you, but it would be nice if they could get a few more options- perhaps using spear should allow you to hit someone two squares away, or a larger weapon could hit them back a square.

I guess he is a bit of an old man (lol) so I didn't have him in this), wants to take on his fathers heroisim. He remembers to when his father (Age 20)got exiled down to Avernum and assasinated Hawthorne, then (Age 70) defeated the Empire with help from the Vahnatai, and (Age 120 (he is classified the oldest man ever alive both on the surface and in Avernum)) then went up to the surface to let Avernites go back up. He wants to be that way, too. Er, thats nice and all, but I think theres a 5 or 6 years difference between each Avernum, not 50. I don't think you should have to come up with backstories for characters, and thus none of mine have one. I'm of the belief that your actions and choices should define who they are. (That is, if you're even interested in a roleplaying expience anyway, which to me, is secondary to gameplay.)
  10. The Good: - No outdoors. - Being revived when you enter a town. It makes a LOT more sense than ressurection...why is it that adventurers can come back but major villains can't? - Infinite arrows. Holy crap, Archery is useful?! - First Aid. Double holy crap, first aid is useful too? The Bad: - Lack of height (Elevation was the only thing I really liked about the Avernum engine.) - The silly skill graphics are gone! - Almost all of the gameplay, actually. The Ugly: - The graphics.
  11. You have to options: One, you can try setting several buttons to one key so that you can do it, or two, you can get an emulator that doesn't totally suck.
  12. Alright. I've been wanting to fiddle around with BoA for some time, and I have a basic plotline, so... The party is hired to go to a mine, which was recently closed, and explore. The mine was closed due to strange creatures (not sure what- DEFINITELY not undead. I hate undead.) attacking miners. The party has to go down, find out what happened, possibly clear out the creatures, and look for survivors. Thoughts?

The moment I touched the arrow-keys and started moving around, a surge of relief rushed through me: Its turned based!!! However, What I didn't like was that the view didn't shift automatically with your party, but I think I saw a function to let it shift with the party somewhere? The arrow key support seems tacked on. If you're using the arrow keys, the camera should scroll with you. (Doesn't make a difference for me though, I use the mouse.) Quote: Originally written by Thralni, chicken god prophet: However, i must say it still disturbs me that there are different graphics. i also thought Jeff said that the shaper and guardian graphics were just something that would be changed later, but I'm now definetely walkign around with a shaper and guardian in my party. Apart from that, i simply don't like the graphics. For me Avernum lost a piece of its charme, and I think that's a pity. I don't see why people care so much. If they don't want shapers in their party, they don't have to use them. Quote: Originally written by Thralni, chicken god prophet: I also find it strange that nobody can die, but is just unconscious. off all things I have seen, how more unrealistic can you get!? "Of all the things"...you don't see anything unrealistic about wizards, dragons, and shooting fire? And anyway, its better than the old system. Why was it that your party could come back from the dead, but major villains couldn't?
  14. I'll test it. I fall under the "new" category. skeletorhatesyou (at) hotmail.com
  15. Is there any way of making the bottoms of the little islands spiky? Making them look more like flying rocks and less like flying squares (Actually, they kinda remind me of Chia Pets as they are now.) could help the picture.
  16. In the second, swampy island, underneath the town there in the labs, wasnt there one there?

  18. In Geneforge 1, I named all my creations after various candies. Snickers the Fyora, Skittles the Vlish, etc. In Geneforge 2, I named them after various celebrities and well-known people whos names I'd seen somewhere- Kofi Annan the Drakon, Simon Cowell the clawbug...

Quote: Originally written by loserclassof06: And there's another reason its so low. You have to make the losses equal the gains. If he made toughness block a percentage of damage or a higher number per hit, it would be overpowered. I think that toughness is worth the 8 or so experience cost per level. Actually, I think its 10 xp per level (I think, it is in BoE, not sure about the trilogy.) but even if it were by 8, thats 400 extra XP needed to reach level 50. By the time you're level 15 or so, 1 point of damage wont really make all that much damage, so that would mean 280XP is going to waste. EDIT: woops, messed up my quote tags.
  20. Just to let you know, BoE scenarios are crossplatform. Also, you haven't given us any info about the scenario, nor given any indication that is near completion, and as such, I do not think anybody really cares. Sorry.
