  1. Adding to what I said, perhaps the reason I find A3 easier is because I play on Easy difficulty. I played on that level in all the Avernum games. I play Exile 3/BoE with the Make Game Easier setting enabled. It must definitely be different if you play at a higher difficulty level or without that setting enabled. Although it's surprising how much damage certain enemies can do to you even on Easy difficulty. See a few BoA scenarios for instance, like perhaps Canopy or In the Shadow of Dragons. As for the trilogy, it seems that the high level spells enemy spell casters use left still exceed 100 damage sometimes on Easy, which is noticeable with Fireblast and Arcane Blow. Of course, that's without protection. If you got the nerve to play Avernum on Torment, I can't imagine how much damage the enemies will do in all those situations. I have to say though, if you do manage to beat any of the Avernum games on Torment, I salute you. Another comment on Exile, I find Exile 1 and 2 to be very difficult, which probably is due to no "Make Game Easier" setting. While the Exile engine has many game abuse options, until you get access to the stuff that allows you to do that, it's very hard. Exile 3 doesn't really get hard until the Golems. In BoE, it depends on the scenario you are playing. Anyway, that's just a few things I noticed about the difficulty of Exile and Avernum.
  2. Hmm, good question. I always found A1 to be the hardest, at least combat in it is. A2 was kind of hard during the first three chapters, before you get more powerful magic and items. It got easier in Chapter 4 though. A3 was definitely the easiest, especially at the beginning, considering the way the melee damage multiplier worked. Even at the beginning, my Slith warrior was one hitting most weak enemies. So yeah, I'd rank them like this, from least to most difficult. A3 A2 (Chapter 4) A2 (Chapter 1-3) A1
  3. Okay, so maybe I'll be designing a scenario for BoA. I just have one question. The icy floor (or anti-lava as some call it) is not a selectable terrain in the BoA editor. Is this normal or is my copy bad? I attend to use this terrain liberally in my scenario. Does this mean you have to create your own terrain script to use it in a scenario? Thanks in advance.
  4. I'd like more scenarios too, for both BoE and BoA, but you don't hear me broadcasting it. I'd work on a scenario for BoA, but I can't seem to get the knack for Avernumscript. So, any scenarios made by myself would be for BoE. If only I could get out of this period of laziness. Anyway, everyone will just have to wait for new scenarios. As it has been said, scenario design takes time, and if the scenario is to be good, it takes even more time. Be patient. New BoX scenarios will come eventually. Meanwhile, we can enjoy the ones that are already released.
  5. Well, for the bug part, if I remember correctly, you can use Move Mountains or Shatter to destroy the bugs. I don't remember the gem part though.
  6. Ah, VoDT. It's the scenario first players play. I have to say, it was very interesting. The combat is very easy for the most part, with only a few harder but optional fights. I liked the design of the towns and school. There were some mildly engaging side quests, like dealing with the local goblin and bandit infestation. Before I went into the school I did them, and I finished them off after I beat the scenario. There was some very nice scripting done, mainly with some of the monsters. I also liked the ending sequence with releasing quickfire into the Major Waste Depository, then being saved by the Vahantai. Overall, it's an enjoyable scenario for the most part, and well made. Better than the BoE version that's for sure. Rating: [rating]Average[/rating]
  7. Now here's a scenario that really is cool. It's pretty interesting. The plot? Kinda played out, there's undead prowling around the area. Jeff keeps it fresh by throwing in some new kinds of undead. I liked that. The combat was rather hard I noticed, at least until I got some higher level spells. Then again, I did play this scenario right after A Small Rebellion, so I guess it's expected. Still, it was very interesting. I liked the scripted rise from the dead zombies that were all over the place in this scenario. It certainly took me by surprise a few times. The town design was very good. I liked how Selecuia looked from outside and inside. The dialogue was excellent too, particularly when you have to deal with that snobby shopkeeper. There were some cool artifacts in the scenario too, my favorite being the Dagger of Defense. I gave it to my Nephil priest, which helps out big time. Overall, I liked this scenario a lot. Many interesting side quests, decent plot, good town design and dialogue, well developed characters, and nice artifacts. Rating: [rating]Good[/rating]
  8. Well, since now I'm no longer playing BoA with a God Party, maybe now I can judge scenarios better, at least on the combat standpoint. Well the Za-Khazi Run was a fairly interesting scenario. There were many interesting surprises hidden deep within. Although I felt that time limit, which in the change from BoE to BoA was reduced, was a bit too restricting. It was 21 days in BoE and now it's 14 days in BoA. Not that it wasn't that hard to get there in time, but I would have liked more time to explore and do side quests. From what I have seen, I suppose the scenario was designed well. I liked the Opal Citadel, which was well designed and had some strategic combat. I really liked the statues coming to life part on the way to the Melora Opal. Morog's realm was pretty interesting, although surprisingly I got clipped by a laser trap while exploring Morog's castle and my Nephil priest died. Then I accidentally hit the save button right after he died. An annoying bit I found after that was there was no healer in Morog's castle. I understand that it's probably for atmosphere but isn't the town in Morog's castle supposed to be some kind of refuge? So, I had quite the conundrum. Use the Character Editor or play the whole rest of the scenario (which would be very hard) without my priest? I chose the former. I feel a bit distressed about it, but it's fine. I may replay it completely and try not to let it happen again to clear my conscience. The scenario does have a lot of replay value considering it's likely you can't see everything in it in one playthrough. I guess that bumps up the rating a little. Summarizing the review: It was a decent scenario which could have been better if it had a less strict time limit and a healer in Morog's Castle. It's worth a replay or two probably just so you can do all you can in it. After that, not so much. Rating: [rating]Average[/rating]
  9. I've been watching this topic for a while now, and I have to say I'm impressed with your dedication to this challenge. I don't think I would ever try it, but it certainly is an interesting premise. It's amazing how you beat VoDT, Adrift, and A Visit to the Madhouse under these rules. Good luck with whatever scenario you play next. I look forward to seeing the play by play.
  10. Out of all the status changes in the Avernum Trilogy and BoA, there's one that I just don't get what it does. That one is Enfeebling. Apparently in A3-BoA it is inflicted by Divine Retribution, and in A1-3 it's also inflicted by Control Foes. What does this status do? When one of my characters are inflicted with it, I don't really see any effect.
  11. However, it's probably best to save before trying to Sanctifying it. Don't want to waste 50 spell points on nothing.
  12. After reading some of these posts, it made me think my first A4 party wasn't really built that well. I had an Elite Warrior, Fast on Feet Slith warrior, a Natural Mage human mage/priest/archer combo, a Natural Mage human mage, and a human priest. (I forget what traits the priest had.) That build seemed to get me by so far, although they were a few hard fights. I had no idea Divinely Touched was so powerful in A4. It makes me want to start a fresh party. I've got to play A4 again soon.
  13. Forgive me if I'm being daft, but I can't seem to find the spell Major Summoning in Exile 3. Where is this spell? I recall it can be learned from a spell book somewhere, but where is it?
  14. Wow! Drizzt is back! Nice to have you back. I really did like SotS. I'm not sure if you remember me but I was in the community for a while (about a couple years or so) and I've designed five scenarios myself. I don't think you ever played them. Well, only two of them are really worth playing though. Hope to see you around though! It's a joy!
  15. It is kind of odd that it does that. The installation does completely finish. I didn't interrupt it in any way. However, it was very fast. Too fast maybe? I guess it must be some kind of quirk. Anyway, I guess in the future I'll have to make backups of the save slots that I haven't even used yet along with my used ones. It's an inconvenience, but it doesn't really matter. Since the unused save slot folders are empty, it doesn't take up any more disk space.
  16. Thanks for replying. I fixed the problem myself though. It turns out that Avernum 5 installer v1.01 didn't completely install the data for all the saved game slots in the Avernum 5 Saved Games directory. I had to create new empty folders in the Avernum 5 Saved Game directory titled "Save1, Save2..." and so on. (I already had Save0 though, which was my current playthrough.) I'm on Windows XP Service Pack 3 by the way. I'm not sure, but it might be a bug Jeff should look into during the installation.
  17. Okay, whenever I try to save a game in any slot but the first one on the left side (the slot in the top left corner) it gives me this error message. Save Error: Couldn't create save file. Try saving in a different slot. Error 3. I enjoy the game, but this is kind of distressing to have because I do want to replay the game using the other save slots. So, anyone got any tips to solve this issue?
  18. You can find some Mining Information in the School of Magery Library. It's in the northwest corner I believe of that level. There's a machine where you can select to obtain tablets on mining.
  19. It's hard to say which Avernum game is my favorite. I really like them all. If I had to pick, it's a solid tie in between A2 and A3.
  20. Okay, I'm playing Avernum 5 now and am enjoying it immensely. However, I'm a bit stuck in the area around the Northern Frontier. I'm having trouble finding Lysstak the Beast. I've searched the entire Northern Frontier pretty much for a way to him, but to no avail. I've talked to everyone around too, but no one mentions anything useful. So, how do I find this super fast and powerful warrior so I can slay him and move on?
  21. This is my current party setup. 1. Slith Pole Fighter/Tank 2. Nephil Warrior/Archer/Thief 3. Human Warrior 4. Human Mage 5. Human Mage/Priest 6. Human Priest #1 has a great amount of HP, so he is the main tank of the party. He deals pretty good damage with the Halberd too. the Tank is well armored as well. #2 has decent archery and edged weapons skills. Although I notice that he hits more often than #1 sometimes. Must be the Nephil's bonus to dexterity. #3 is just a backup fighter instead something breaks through the tank. He's the secondary tank. He wields a flail and decent armor. #4 is a high level mage, she helps bring Troglodytes down to size. They can't survive a well placed Fireball or Firestorm spell. #5 is a high level mage, low level priest. Essentially she also throws multiple Firestorms at the enemy, but she can also heal everyone a bit. A backup priest in case the high level one dies. #6 is my main high level priest. With up to level 5 priest spells, he can help buff my fighters up. Of course, I'm still in the training phase, but this party tore through the Slime and Roach quests. Troglodytes don't last too long.
  22. I still play BoE. It is still a very fun game. I've played pretty much every released scenario out there. I've designed five scenarios and in the progress of designing a sixth.
  23. Ah, a new BoE scenario! How wonderful. I'll definitely take a look at it sometime. It's good to see people are still designing scenarios for BoE. I'm still designing a BoE scenario myself.
  24. Okay, after extensive sessions of scenario design, alpha-testing, and beta-testing, my fifth scenario for BoE, Dark Side of the Moon has now been released. It is available for download at my website: http://srmboe0.tripod.com/id23.html Hope you enjoy playing it!

Name one random scenario that has not been mentioned by anyone in this thread (first that comes in your head.) The Lost Island (Poor choice, eh?) If TM returned, and he and Kel continued to argue, do you think that should continue, or do you think they just have to duke it out? I really hate to see any conflict between valued members of the BOE community. I hope they settle it, but without resorted to harsh words.
