  1. You have to be a Taker to open them. (See Shrodinger's faq at http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/game/918441.html for more details, including a complete walkthrough for the area.) PS Welcome to the forums.
  2. To get the Demon's Claw, you have to kill the main demon in Pit of the Bound. (Info from Shrodinger's faq linked at the top of forum page.)
  3. Note that there is a 15$ discount if you purchase it together with another game. So I suggest waiting until there is another Spidweb game that you want (for example Geneforge 3) and bying the two together. While Nethergate is definitely a great deal for 15$, I think 30$ might be a bit too much for it, considering that you could buy almost any other Spidweb game for 25$.
  4. The most cost-effective spell depends on the situation. If you are an agent, you'll get more benefit from attack spells, but if you are a Shaper with lots of creations, you'll get more benefit from blessing spells. If you are far from a town, you'll need healing spells, but if you are right next to a town, just running into town is cheaper. Even which attack spell to use depends on how much damage you need to do and whether you are fighting a single enemy or multiple enemies. And I haven't even mentioned spell levels and skill levels.
  5. I have it and liked it a lot a few years ago. It's engine isn't as polished as that of Avernum, but has some nice elements not found in other SW games. It also has a good storyline and I find it very fun to be able to play the same story from 2 opposing points of view.

    Price

Avernum is the exact copy of Exile, but with a new engine. So there is absolutely no reason to buy both Avernum and Exile games. This means that anybody who considers registering Exile games now is a hard core fan who probably doesn't care about the price. The only thing Jeff could accomplish by lowering prices for Exile series is cutting into his Avernum sales. As for BoE, it is currently a better value than BoA, because a value of a game like this is in its scenarios and there are far more quality scenarios BoE.
  7. It's always a good idea to back up your saved games before reinstalling. It's possible that your saved games were corrupted, so I'd suggest trying to start a new game in your current version and, if that doesn't work, starting a new game after a clean install. If that new game is fine, you can try opening old saved game.
  8. Before doing anything as drastic as Windows registry modifications, I'd suggest milder solutions: 0. Backup your savefiles. 1. Try deleting save directories (Save0, Save1, Save2, etc.) in your Geneforge > Data folder. After deleting them, recreate them manually. 2. Try reinstalling the game. (Back up your registration if the game is already registered.
  9. Try e-mailing Jeff himself at spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com I don't think anybody besides him will be able to answer your question.
  10. If I am not mistaken, there is also a potion that removes dumbfounding. (Potion of Clarity?)
  11. You could try ordering by e-mail. (If you don't mind sending your Credit Card number in e-mail.) Or you could order by snail mail. In fact, they have 6 methods of ordering: http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/ordering.html
  12. If you are still having trouble, you can try walkthroughs from Shrodinger's faq: http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/game/918441.html Just search for the words "Broken Crystal Pieces" and it will take you to the right parts of the text.
  13. If I remember correctly, this is one of the places where you have to disarm the mines in combat mode: 1. Go into combat mode and open the door. 2. Use a speed pod standing near the wall, so that you can's see the mines. 3. Run in, disable one of the mines, and run out in the same turn, hiding in the safe spot again. 4. If the other mine hasn't gone off, repeat step 3. PS Here is a map of what I mean by a "safe spot": Code: m m___d__ p m = mined = door p = player in a safe spot
  14. For an example of an even more obsessive organization: I had various kinds of items in separate piles in various cities. (Drypeak for quest items, pods and spores, Medab for weapons, armor and ammunition, etc.) Unfortunately, I can't do this in Geneforge 3, because it takes time to travel between cities. Just make sure you don't make hostile the factions in whose cities you are storing stuff, unless you are ready to wipe out all the guards in town to get your stuff back.
  15. Never mind. I should have read the post more carefully.
  16. There is a limited number of spots in your inventory. If your inventory is full, you'll still be able to pickup stackable items (such as pods), if you are already carrying some, but will not be able to pick up any items that would take a new inventory spot. PS Dropped items always stay there, even if you leave an area for a long time. So you can solve inventory problems by making piles of items you don't currently need at an entrance to some town.
  17. Have you talked to the Servant Mind in the area already? You will have to feed him before he will help you open the doors. You can get more detailed walkthrough from Shrodinger's faq (which is where I got above info from): http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/game/562951.html (Also linked at the top of the page.)
  18. There are well over a dozen possible endings, if you count each minor variation. This happens because many things you do affect different aspects of the ending. Some actions will change only a single line, while others change entire pages. Here are the actions I remember, listed in order of magnitude of change they cause: 1. Joining one of the sects. 2. Fulfilling all objectives for one of the sects (or killing Barzite and Taker leaders if you are unaligned.) 3. Using canisters. (You are allowed to use 4 or 5 canisters with no problem, but if you get "people now look strangely at you" message when traveling in populated area, you know you've used too many. Being augmented by a sect also counts as using too many canisters.) 4. Killing Zachari. 5. Killing Barzahl. 6. Finding and killing Shanti's (sp?) killer. 7. Killing the leader of awakened.
  19. I think the answer might be in this walkthrough: http://www.geocities.com/zeviz1/nethergate/rwalk.html#abandoned_mines
  20. Apparently the game has been released for Windows today. (Check Spidweb main page.)
  21. If people really want to see some of these thing implemented, you should do the same thing as for BoA: at some point when Jeff is just beginning to work on Geneforge 3, make a huge poll, listing all of these suggestions and asking people what they want. Then take the top 10 suggestions, write them up very well and submit the list to Jeff. If you decide to do it that way, before making a poll you will have to remove all suggestions that would require significant changes to game engine. (You are not going to be able to use 2 weapons at once, no matter how hard you ask. You are also not going to see things such as transparent walls or expensive modern graphics.) As for my own addition to the list, I have to repeat the complaint I had when beta-testing GF1: clicking on your character should not skip a turn. I've lost many battles because I accidentally clicked my character when trying to attack an oponent standing in front of me or when trying to take a small step forward.
  22. Since zeviz.thekavern.net is still down, I've reposted my pages back on geocities. So until further notice, please use http://www.geocities.com/zeviz1/ for Avernum 2 Guide and http://www.geocities.com/zeviz1/nethergate/ for Nethergate Guide And to clarify again, my A2 page and Nethergate page are based entirely on Shrodinger's faqs. So when referring to either of those pages, please give credit to Shrodinger, rather than me. PS Sorry that it took me so long to realize that I need to repost the page. I guess this is what happens when a page of a person who is no longer here is hosted by another person who is no longer here.
  23. There is some object on the altar in the North-West corner. There is also some object in the fartherst part of catacombs. (To enter catacombs, go down the stairs in the garden in South-Eastern part of the map.) I don't remember which object is which and my Nethergate page is down. (My friend who is hosting it is having problems with her ISP.) If I remember correctly, the altar is just a decoy, so check downstairs first.
  24. The main reason Nethergate is not as popular as Jeff's other games is its small size. It took me less time to finished Nethergate 2.5 times then to finish Avernum 2 once. This means that people don't spend as much time playing the game. And since they don't spend as much time playing the game, they are not as interested in discussing it.
  25. To get there he had to use the "fight-end cheat", a cheat that lets you bypass some traps: Wheneve you end combat mode your party moves a little. This can be used to "teleport" over traps. If you play around with this, you'll figure out a way to control the direction in which you move. Be careful in the village of Nethergate as Romans. The traps are in many places so you should save often. (And since you aren't supposed to ever bypass any of the traps, you will not be able to talk to any NPCs there.)
