  1. Geostatistics, that's awesome. OK, yeah, definitely gonna hold you to a high standard now that I know the level of precision you are capable of, hehe Actually I am impressed again by your ability to hear feedback. That is a high-level skill to be sure, and I know I could use a few more points in it myself, so -- props, alhoon.
  2. Let me preface this by saying I don't mean this as an attack. I am trying to offer constructive commentary to improve future discussion around here Alhoon, this is a shining example of what I am always talking about. You start by insisting that something is true. Other people say it isn't and cite evidence. Instead of looking at that evidence, you cite "evidence" that doesn't even exist. I wish you would either 1) be a little bit less "fast and loose" with your conclusions, or 2) clearly differentiate between the times you are randomly asserting something, and the times you are trulysure about something
  3. What, really? Where does it say they are outsiders? I also remembered explicit use of "Guardian."
  4. Haha, indeed, this is a blast from the past Rereading these threads... I would wager that this thread is more likely to be correct, and that luck may be bugged out in A4. I say this because we know more about other relevant factors (like Torment directly impacting armor/resists) now than we did then, and I can imagine a scenario where one of those impacted my data without my realizing it. But my inclination would be to not bother testing -- A4 has wacky enough game balance as it is -- and just skip Luck.
  5. Presumably she went through the same highly-regulated training as all Shapers/Guardians/Agents go through. So it's safe to say she has the Shaper Council's approval as a female Guardian.
  6. The big thing in G2 was that it introduced a second dimension to the sects. Instead of just being about servile rights, now the sects also dealt with the question of responsible use of power (which was a separate question in G1). So you get: Loyalists -- no servile rights, restrain power Awakened -- servile rights, restrain power Barzites -- no servile rights, unrestrained power Takers -- servile rights, unrestrained power This misses a few nuances -- the Awakened are less absolute in restraining power than the Shaper Council; the Loyalists are less absolute in hating serviles than the Barzites; etc. But it is the basic setup. 7. As I'm sure you've noticed, each class has a skill area it's strong at and a skill area it's weak at. The three classes that are strong at combat (which include the Servile) have the most HP. (And since Serviles can't shape or heal as well as Guardian/Warriors, they need to be more self-reliant, I guess.) The Shock Trooper is not strong at combat. It is average at combat -- like the Agent/Infiltrator. So I think the HP multiplier makes sense there. (And having lots of spell energy and essence are less important for spellcasters than having high magic stats are.)
  8. Lose the Clawbug. It'll never be as useful as the others. Definitely keep the Cryoa since you've levelled it. Personally I'd just make two Vlish now and make some Terror Vlish later when you have more essence to play with. The Vlish will want the extra levels more than the Terror Vlish do, and having extra Slow effects hit your enemies is *always* useful.
  9. The Second Trilogy, meanwhile, was a little bit in between. The mechanics had some things that favored branching out (e.g., increasing skill point costs) and some things that favored specializing (e.g., having 4 different skills to invest in to power melee damage). The bigger shift -- and this affects A4-6 as well as the remakes of A1-2 -- was the shift to auto-generated, generic defensive stats for enemies, along with the funneling of almost all spell effects into either damage, healing, or status effects. Spell variety could lead to neat tactical things when there were more options with walls, summons, and the like. Without that, the enduringly useful battle skills converged on dealing damage, while at the same time, fewer enemies cared what type of damage they were hit with.
  10. Short answer: no. You cannot give the Guardian and Warrior equal Essence growth. (This is the only Shaper/Rebel pair with different growth.) You can, however, change starting HP/SP/essence bonuses. And you can change the huge "invisible bonus armor" that Shaper classes receive in G5 due to a bug.
  11. Battle Shaping is not as bad in G1-2 as it is in G3-4, but it's still pretty bad. Fire Shaping is fine though. Cryoas especially are good.
  12. Vlish are excellent. Not head and shoulders above every other option, but still certainly one of the best options. If you go Magic Shaping there's really no need for other options. Eyebeasts especially are also fun. I don't remember the exact cutoff, but you can surely find it here.
  13. Canister use does figure in the endings, some more than others. Each of the 5 endings requires completing a different set of tasks. Most of these endings (not quite all, I think? Not sure) require killing or enraging at least one of the people who serve as taskmaster for another ending, but usually this is late in the chain. So you can complete almost all of the game, except for a handful of tasks. Note however that you do have to manage your reputation (a la G4) in order to be suitably appealing to a given faction, so while you can potentially switch around, you can't switch between the more conservative and more liberal ends of the spectrum many times.
  14. Either way, this is really a helpful clarification.
  15. In the right context those words could imply a sexual relationship (although it would be a weird way to say it). They clearly do not imply it here. The contextual implication is unambiguously that "setting her free" was a much bigger deal to her than simply being her friend would have been. You are willfully misreading the text and applying your own extrapolation.
  16. Litalia changes her story about that between games though. She's inconsistent. I'm willing to trust her as a person, but given her canister intake, that doesn't mean her memory is going to be 100% accurate. Frankly, the concept that the Shaper Council would hear about everything in Drypeak (including spoilers) and then send one (1) young Shaper there to take care of it is hilarious. And also quite disproved by the actual G2 endings. G1 and G2 both have significantly more diversity in their endings than the later games do. Even though the later games do make it clear what the "canonical" ending is (and not based on Litalia's memory, based on, you know, how the war actually went) I think you need to take all the possibilities into account when you are judging people -- or sects. Because they all could have happened.
  17. I just found a way to do it via the search function: http://spiderwebforums.ipbhost.com/index.php?/search/?type=core_members The display is sort of heinous, unfortunately, so you're probably better off using the search function to narrow it down.
  18. I copied the blues and grays in C&C straight from PPP, so they should be identical. The maroon I copied and then made a little lighter -- it was used in narrower spaces there and the effect of big patches felt a lot blacker than it had before. Most non-color changes (like adding that box behind the icons) are CSS and Javascript edits, unfortunately, and not just ticking off a box. I'm going to try not to think about the potentially patriotic colors. I was going to say that maybe your avatar made it seem extra red-white-and-blue -- but then I realized that I, too, have a red and blue avatar.
  19. I assume from the above that you are talking primarily about the original First Avernum Trilogy and definitely not the remakes (which are the opposite of this).
  20. I've spent the last two days working on the "Compact & Convenient" theme. The main goal is to use screen real estate better than the default theme, which can fill a large monitor with three one-sentence posts. It's also become a UBB throwback because, well, doing that made things surprisingly agreeable-looking. I'm not 100% done so if you see anything that looks weird, or have any suggestions, definitely pass them on.
  21. Usually they are very prompt, but there have been cases where they go on an unannounced vacation for a few days. Unfortunately, this sucks for new customers who happened to register a game just then. I would write back after tomorrow morning if you still haven't heard anything.
  22. OK, this is a real confluence of author names, so I added 'em all. Also found an additional SF writer, Cynthia Felice, who seems especially likely since she collaborated with Connie Willis, another SF author who has a cameo in a later game.
  23. Those were dismissed because there are better, conflicting origin possibilities for them, especially Port Townsend, and because they are far apart and/or in different games.
  24. Presumably if he said that, the investigating Shapers (that he knew would come sooner or later) would want to go investigate the experiments. His plan to hide things wasn't a great one, but it was better than that. Heh! Well, it was for you. For the rest of us, who played G1-2 first, there was very little mystery, and instead a sense of boring deja vu.
  25. I guess I shouldn't be surprised about this -- you are a willful one! But if you choose to ignore the obvious hints the game drops, that's on you. The game isn't hard, alhoon is hard
