But then how did they find the fungi; deep caves usually do not support anything more than bacteria.

Solberg must be one crafty bioengineer.

This is referenced on numerous occasions in the games.

All references but one or two agree that the glowing fungi were there when the first Exiles were sent down, and that the Vahnatai created them. Erika says that she created them (and maybe somebody else says that; I forget). Given that the glowing fungi exist all over Vahnatai lands, it is pretty clear that Erika didn't actually create them from whole cloth. However, it is certainly possible that she created a _modified version of them_ better suited to their needs to the caves of Exile.

In the original trilogy, Erika was the only powerful human mage who ever talked about dealing with plants, animals, transformations, or alchemy. X picked up a plant habit in the second trilogy, but since we are talking about something that happened several decades before X1, when X probably hadn't even been exiled yet, Erika is the only likely suspect for any fungal adaptations. Not Solberg.

That's true; I had forgotten about Erika.
  2. The analogy of the genetic code as a recipe does not work--well.

A better way to think of DNA is as a recipe.

Much like with a fully formed cake, you cannot look at the phenotype of an organism and know what ingredients (genes) went into making it. Single genes rarely code for the structure or function of any particular part of an organism; instead, what happens is that the products of multiple genes (proteins) are "mixed" together to form the end-product--the organisms phenotype.

The Genome if it is a blueprint at all, is a blueprint for making strings of amino acids; however even here, things like protein shape do not correspond directly to the gene that coded for its amino acid sequence.

it was a small box and i was glad to have them taken off my hands

also i am unfamiliar with Halloween etiquette because as previously established it is not a thing here

Etiquette says give them as small a piece of candy as possible because you may see 200-300 kids if you live in a popular area. Of course, like you said, Australia is too mature for Halloween.

I do believe that I win though, for greatest distance to server--300 miles.

  6. Too many people are too concerned about progressing through set-points in life like, getting a job, buying a house, having kids, retiring, then having a funeral. If those are really the most important things for you than do them, but don't do them just because they are somehow the expected "normal" things to do.

Personally, I'm in no hurry to jump into my coffin.

It'd probably suck, mostly. Real-time debate would offer far less time to coherently organize ones points, and would demand a far different sort of conversational aptitude than we're using here.

Yeah, lol. I don't think the people that frequent Spidweb are the best conversationalists. In person debate requires showmanship to make it interesting; being intelligent, and thorough isn't enough.

I'd want to know what those ten people did before I'd make that kind of decision...

Doesn't matter at all. The legal system says that one is innocent until proven guilty. This limits the type 1 error. At some point society, or those with power, decided that it's better to let a killer go than kill an innocent. I agree fully with that; it's just the price of doing business.
  9. Can't we just decide that governments and courts should never have the power to kill people, their own people at least. I mean, what does it accomplish?

As for the "better dead than life in prison argument", I don't agree. Life is short, and precious; I would rather live my life in prison. Or at least, if I knew that my only options were death or life in prison, I would pick prison every time. Again, your religiosity may compensate, but my lack of does not.

Edit: Now it's time to go run 20km, and feel happy that I am privileged to do so.

  10. This whole situation makes me profoundly sad. I keep thinking how terrible it would be to be wheeled into the execution chamber knowing you didn't do the crime. It must be such a powerless feeling.

It's a good thing the guy was religious, other people such as myself wouldn't have been quite so complacent about death.

In the end the death penalty is too final; there's no way to ever make amends. I thought our justice system understood that.
