Fledgling Fyora Lineage The Silent
I've recently downloaded the Geneforge 4 demo, version 1.0.1, hopefully that is the current version. Names of characters, the message displayed when quitting, and several other areas all look very obscure, to the point of illegibility. I've tried the suggestions provided in the Tech Support, Hints, Uninstalling file. The O/S is 10.4.8 I am trying a reinstall now, but also wanted to see if there were any known issues with this version.
Chittering Clawbug Duskwolf
Open up the Font Book utility, select all your fonts, and tell it to validate them (it's in the File menu). If it turns up any problems, have it remove those fonts. If that doesn't do it, look through your fonts to see if you've got any that look like the distorted text. Fledgling Fyora Lineage The Silent
Duskwolf, Thanks for the advice. Sadly, none of the fonts in Font Book look obscured like what I see in Geneforge. Font Book validation detected Missing OpenType Data for opens___.ttf, claimed it was critical, so I removed it. This still did not resolve the obscured fonts issue. I've reinstalled, and redownloaded, all to no avail. If the font problem wasn't present when buying stuff (i.e. my current coins is in the obscured font) I could live with not seeing the name properly. Interestingly, when I first ran Geneforge, I did not have any problems with the font, but it started appearing while playing that first instance. I told it not to switch resolution that first time. I have since re-run with the same "change resolution" option and confirmed the problem is permanent. It doesn't matter now what setting I use for resolution. Time to email Jeff or to re-install the O/S? Understated Ur-Drakon Tyranicus
I hate to say it, but it sounds like reinstalling the O/S is your best option. OSX actually isn't very painful when it comes to reinstalling though.
Hatchling Cockatrice Lilith
What model of computer are you using? There have been logic board and video issues with quite a lot of Macs in the past couple of years, particularly iMacs, eMacs and iBooks. If you start having problems with other applications over the next few weeks, it's probably a hardware failure. The good news is that Apple is offering free out-of-warranty repairs for many of these problems. Check this page to see if your model of Mac is one with known issues. Well-Actually War Trall Spidweb
Geneforge 4 uses its own font system, so dickering with the system fonts won't help. Also, I wouldn't reinstall the operating system just yet. Write me at spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com. If you could send me a screenshot of the messed up text, it would be a huge help. Maybe I can play with it and see if I can fix the problem. - Jeff Vogel
Fledgling Fyora Lineage The Silent
Thuryl: The system is a PowerPC G4 733 MHz with 512 MB Ram. Geneforge is the only application to exhibit this distortion. Spidweb: I have emailed the requested screenshots. I'd be happy to provide any more assistance that I can. Well-Actually War Trall Spidweb
It appears that the problem happens when there is a second monitor on the system which is set to millions of colors. This should be fixed in the next update (probably out in 2-3 weeks). In the meantime, a workaround is to set the second monitor to thousands of colors before playing. - Jeff Vogel
