How to kill Basilisks?

Currently I'm about level 14 as romans on normal. When I find a group of basilisks, so far, it's a quick and hard (as stone) game over screen.

Am I missing something?

Usually if you have one character with an item (crystal Charm?) with some resistance to stoning you have him in front. That character takes the attacks to shield everyone else. There are other things that help like Luck with all resistances.

 

In general this works for everything. Have characters with enough dexterity to go first in combat at least the first slot. You can survive going second, but it's harder.

You mean the charm that does +20% against mental effects? Getting stoned is mental right?

I've been upping my luck, I don't know how effective it is in this game, in Avernum it didn't appear too powerful.

Should someone else search for this, I found the crystal charm, it gives 80% resistance to petrification. It's in Castle Aethdoc and you can't miss it as part of the storyline missions.

Between that and some luck (and lucky bracers), my frontliner was almost immune to stoning. I needed one reload.
