Curious Artila Castus
Hi. A short question. In the Spiderweb Software Compatibility Guide it says: Avernum 1-3 - These games will only run on versions of the Macintosh OS prior to 10.7 (Lion). We are currently working on rewrites of these games that will run on the newer versions of the Macintosh operating system. However, the necessary revisions are extensive, and the process will take some time. Does that refer to the rewrites with the new engine (like Avernum: Escape from the Pit) or is there going to be a new version of the same Avernum 1/2/3 games (that I loved so much) that runs on Intel machines at some point in the future? In either case, what is the schedule for these releases?
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
Rewrites refers to Avernum: Escape from the Pit and about the end of this year Avernum 2: Crystal Souls with the last one maybe 2 years later. There was a minor patch to let Avernum 1 to 3 run natively on Intel CPUs when Apple switched from Power PC. You can run current versions using the Windows version under Wineskin for OS 10.7. They are here
Curious Artila Castus
Thanks for the reply. Where can I get that 'minor patch' that lets Avernum 1-3 run natively on Intel CPUs? I was under the impression that no such thing existed. The Wineskin Versions do not work for me, unfortunately.
Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
The minor patch should be the current download version.
Understated Ur-Drakon Tyranicus
There was a minor patch to let Avernum 1 to 3 run natively on Intel CPUs when Apple switched from Power PC. No, there was not. The games were upgraded to use the Carbon framework and run natively in OS X as PowerPC apps, so they could run on Intel Macs running 10.6 or lower utilizing Rosetta, but they were never made Intel-native. Garrulous Glaahk macdude22
I think GoG has wrapped the Windows versions up that run fine on recent versions of OS X. If you don't mind spending a couple bucks on games you might already have. For me it was worth it, during the sale, to be able to run my favorite games on my MBP with little hassle. Understated Ur-Drakon Tyranicus
The GoG versions use Wineskin as well, so if the versions on my site don't work for the OP, then the GoG versions will probably not work either.
Tenderfoot Thahd Durandal
You can run the first Avernum trilogy on the newer OS X using Sheepshaver or BasiliskII (classic environment emulators). I think I'll make a post about it, since it's pretty easy to set up once you get past the awful awful interface.
Understated Ur-Drakon Tyranicus
You can use SheepShaver because it emulates an old PPC Mac. You cannot use BasiliskII, as that emulates an old 68k CPU, and the Avernum games were never fat binaries. The Exile games do run in BasiliskII though.
