Fledgling Fyora krissyfyre
Hi everyone. I was a bit hesitant to post this on here since I've never had good experiences interacting with this community previously, but I'm just not selfish enough to keep this to myself I've never really been a fan of the graphics of the new Avernums. They just don't give me the same feeling as those of the original series. It's not that the graphics suck or anything; it's just that the colours aren't as good as they could be. This afternoon I decided to play around with the resources of the game a little bit with photoshop, changing the colours to better match the older series. As a result, the game now looks almost shockingly better (in my opinion); so much so that I'd hate to play it the other way again. You can see some screenshots here, with an unaltered screenshot for comparison: https://picasaweb.google.com/10066939869...feat=directlink Would anyone like these graphics for their own copy of the game? It would be simple enough to install, and you might get back that feeling the old Avernums gave you
Ineffable Wingbolt Superba
For what I can see there is color saturation in some photos and saturation of green color in some others. Most scenaries seem darker, too.
Seasoned Roamer yarrmateys
i'd be interested in trying out those edited graphics. in windows version though, but it shouldn't be hard to adjust them to work in it.
Curious Artila Pemptus
Needs more comparison screenshots. But in general, yes yes and very much yes. Choice of ambiance and mood is good.
Fledgling Fyora krissyfyre
Here are some more comparison screenshots: https://picasaweb.google.com/100669398699184156438/June102012?authuser=0&feat=directlink Here is a link to download the updated graphics: http://www.dna-iq.com/Resources.zip To install them on a Mac, open your Avernum - Escape from the Pit folder, right click on the app itself (called Avernum), then click Show Package Contents from the resulting drop-down menu. Then you should open the Contents folder, then backup the Resources folder to another place on your hard disk. After you've backed the folder up, put the contents of the zip file into the original Resources folder, and tell it to overwrite any existing files when you are prompted. To install them on Windows, navigate to Program Files -> Spiderweb Software -> Avernum - Escape from the Pit -> Avernum Files. Then backup the folders called Avernum Graphics, Avernum Graphics Core, and Avernum Graphics PC to somewhere safe on your hard drive. Then simply copy the contents of the zip file into the three original folders, and overwrite the original files when prompted. To get the original graphics back, then simply copy overwrite the original folders with your backups. Note: this process will only change the graphics. Text files will not be overwritten, nor anything else that could affect gameplay. I'd love to hear what you guys think of the new graphics. In the exceedingly unlikely event you have any issues, describe the problem and I'll fix it right away. Enjoy
Curious Artila Arch
Having only looked at the comparison pictures, it seems pretty neat! As for an honest opinion, I'd still prefer the stock art despite having a lighter, less depressing theme. More people modding can only be a good thing for any game, and these games are excellent! Curious Artila CoarseDragon
That is good work some ground areas are to green though. At this point I prefer the original.
Magnificent Ornk Dikiyoba
Ooh, pretty blue cave walls. Dikiyoba has downloaded the edited graphics and will put a few in during Dikiyoba's next playthrough.
Magnificent Ornk nikki.
Yeah. Some of these are great (the walls, and the water spring to mind). Nice work.
Magnificent Ornk Dikiyoba
Hey krissyfyre, would you make a full version of the cave floor graphics (the new G2200 and G2280) with all the partial tiles included? Without the partial tiles, the edges between the cave floor and other floor types isn't as smooth as it could be. Thanks. Dikiyoba.
Fledgling Fyora krissyfyre
The original versions of those tiles didn't come with partials. They don't need them. They're base tiles; the other textures have the partials, which overlay the base cave floor texture, and let the cave floor shine through partially in some places, giving that smooth transition between cave floor to rock or whatever. It's actually quite ingenious; it would otherwise be like fitting together a jig-saw puzzle to blend the textures. It's much simpler to just overlay a base tile, rather than cut the base tile to fit with all the other tiles. Far more memory and space-efficient too. Bottom line is, though I can't see it, if the edges don't look as smooth with the new textures, the new colour of the cave floor is the issue. Well-Actually War Trall Rowen
This is fantastic. The color change really changes the atmosphere of the game for me. Thank you for the time and effort you put into this.
Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
Very cool. There are some great changes. The cavewood, for example, looks terrific, and making the walls less pink is also great, and the roof of the tower icon. But I think things may be a little bit too blue. The fungi are a problem, not so much because blue fungi are an impossibility, but because now instead of having stalagmites and fungi and purple trees, they all blend together as dark blue obstacles. What was wrong with the old fungi and purple trees? I'm wondering about the cave floor, too. What was wrong with the old cave floor? That already looked pretty close to Avernum cave floor (as well as BoE floor and Exile 1.x floor) and now it is like that except... blue. The walls needed a change, but why not just make them gray? The whole screen feels washed out in blue, and I find the effect is less Old Avernum and more Happy-Happy Village Under Carpainter. Nonetheless, awesome initiative and I look forward to messing around with installing individual files.

Fledgling Fyora krissyfyre
I found the old fungi and tree graphics pretty ugly to be honest. The blue color makes them palatable to my eyes. Really I would have liked the trees to look like the old Avernums, but a color change is the best I could do in lieu of creating new graphics. The floor and walls have been color matched to the old Avernums from this screenshot: http://www.avernum.com/blades/images/BoAfight.jpg They're the same green and blue colours as the old floors and walls now. The old floors and walls weren't gray. Realistically absolutely everything should be dark, and bathed in green and blue as the dialogue states that Avernum is lit by lichen which glows green. It looks great too, and it makes it all feel less whimsical. Underground prisons shouldn't be whimsical.
