Geneforge 5 interface

Recommended Posts

I just started playing Geneforge 5. First impressions are mostly positive: a lot of different classes, intriguing plot, nice-looking graphics and artwork. But there are two things, both interface-related, that really spoil my pleasure.

First, is a very, very small font. I have 22" widescreen monitor (max resolution is 1680*1050) and I tried all possible resolutions, but the font is too small for me anyway. I can read it, but don't want to ruin my eyesight. In Avadon, there was a choice in settings menu for larger font, but nothing similar in Geneforge 5...

Second, is a very strange behaviour of inventory menu. In Geneforge 1, for example, you could simply click on an item icon to add it to your back pack, but in G5 you must click-and-drag it every time, that is extremely annoying. Using keyboard shortcuts like 'a', 'b', 'c' you are able to obtain items instantly without dragging, but I don't like such shortcuts (never used them in Avernum, Geneforge or Avadon).

Please if you know any possible solutions or want to tell about your own opinion about these 'things', answer.

The changing font size was added to Avadon at the last minute after some players had the same complaint. If some players email Jeff it may get changed in the other games.

The inventory system changes from game to game. That probably won't get fixed since most players like keyboard commands.

Well, I hope somebody will email the creators. Though it's obvious that they are very busy with their own problems.

By the way, I noticed that Avadon in general is very user-friendly, much more than previous Spiderweb games (however, battle mechanics is too simple, if not 'casual').
