Fledgling Fyora Paul35
Hi Everyone, A while ago, I bought the Avernum 1-3 games as a complete set and I've been playing A1. A1 is OK, but I've just killed Grah-Hoth and now I'm pretty much like, eh... the hell with it. I'm at the point where I'm at Black Spire, and have just realized I need to get the Royal Seal. I don't doubt that I could eventually find out where the seal is, but to me it all seems like too much pointless running from place to place, talking to this person and that person, with no combat and nothing really interesting going on. The lack of an in game quest log and a quick travel option really seems to become a grind in the late game when you need to collect a lot of stuff and don't have any unexplored dungeons left. Not to mention that fighting Black Shades is about as fun as contracting Swine Flu. I did enjoy a lot of A1. I would never have made it this far if that wasn't the case. But I don't really to want invest this much time into A2 or 3 if I run into these same in game lulls and a lot of pointless running back and forth for idle chit-chat. So for those of you who have played all the Avernums, what would you recommend? Would you consider A2 and/or 3 to be worth getting into for a player like me? Is there more organization and continuous plot development/action, or should I skip it and head back to Geneforge, which I liked?
Magnificent Ornk Dikiyoba
A2 and A3 both have quest logs (and a better journal, if Dikiyoba remembers correctly). They also have a fairly limited teleportation system. Nothing as convenient as Geneforge's zone system though. And you do have to do some running around to talk to people. Hatchling Cockatrice Randomizer
A2 has the better plot of all the games. A3 has more open exploration where you can go almost anywhere until you die from nastier monsters than your level. All the games have places where if you miss a key conversation then you miss an item for a quest. The Royal Seal in A1 is mentioned as being worn by a member in the First Expedition by an actress in one of the forts north of the Castle. It's in Grah-Hoth's old fortress in the Lava Fields east of the Great Cave, but you need a password from I think Patrick to get inside. Nasty fights against demons, but it gets more interesting. I guess that's what my problem is - I'm exactly the type of player who misses key conversations because I mainly enjoy fighting stuff. I know the actress you meant. I even trained up all my characters to level 5 in gymnastics with her, but it never occurred to me that the other stuff she said might be important too. I'll likely suck it up and finish A1 off sometime in the future - it feels like I'm 90% done and it would be a shame to come all this way and not complete it. Anyway, I'll see if the quest log and teleport options in A2 are more my cup of tea. It won't cost me anything, after all. Thanks for the feedback
Unflappable Drayk Toby-Linn
I would definitely try all three of them, it's not like it will cost you extra since you have them on CD. The quest logs for A2 and A3 definitely make the games better in my opinion! The Avernum games definitely have a lot of talking to do, and lots of running around all over the map. But there is also lots of fighting.
