  1. Depending on the path your character takes throughout the rest of the game, it's easy enough to clear everything up to the barrier in the center of the Spiral Pit, report that to Commander Lynn, then get the second quest from the job board in Silvar to go back and get past the barrier and clear the rest of the Pit. When I've played, I generally don't have high enough Dispel Barrier to get to the center until later, so the routing makes sense. But the game is non-linear, anyway. :)

  2. By chance I found I didn't get the quest, that still was on the job board in Silvar. Then I went back to Commander Lynn, she properly thanked me and gave me the coins. After that, the skeptical dialogue didn't disappear. Mistery partially solved

Well, she is understandably doubtful about the Spiral Pit being clear of all undead influence. I mean, I think we have to clear it out in every iteration of the game, right? ;-)

  3. This is almost certainly intended. Enemy salamanders work the same way -- they just tend to appear with other enemies that are immune to fire damage. Because really, what else would hang out with a lizard that is surrounded by raging flames?

The salamander just passively generates flames because it's a salamander. It's not a consciously controlled attack the way a breath weapon is.

I remember when fighting Efreets once that they summoned demons that were not immune to the fire effects of the Efreets themselves. It was funny to watch them die of their summoners' damage.

  4. The warded demons were already dead, and another party member was holding the new empire soldiers at bay. I forget whether Garzahd can get in multiple attacks per round. Maybe he killed him with different attack, then banished him when he was already dead?

Or perhaps Garzahd hit him with something that inflicted a poisoned or lightning status, then banished him, then the status took effect and killed him on his turn.

  5. Probably just a little experience, and given how many Wisdom Crystals my mage and priest gulped down over the course of the game, I'm not really that worried. Finished the second and third major quests today. Fun stuff. I may go back in a week or so and try it with a two-person party instead of 4. See how that changes things. Tactics were pretty simple when I could put my tank up front and have my mage, priest, and archer kill everything while he took all the damage (or none of the damage, as 90% of the time they couldn't hit him).

  6. It seems that if you go to the Empire Archives and get the information about the portal location, and decide to go straight to the portal (which after all isn't very far from the archives) rather than traipsing back to the complete opposite end of Avernum first, you can't actually clear the Empire Archives quest from the quest log. At least, that's what happened to me. Anyone else experience this?

  7. For the Secret Sliths book, you need to perform a ritual with the pools nearby before you can read the book. Touch all three of the pools and you're good to go.

Yeah, I figured that one out (noticed the kneeling pads), which was how I got to test the Dread Curse thing. ;-) Anyway, now I'm busily running around to find all the annoying little mounds of rock I couldn't remove before in the game and getting those last little bits before I do the other two game winning quests. I'd already rescued all three Crystal Souls before I even got around to looking this stuff up.

  8. Correct. Between my mage and my priest I have 16 Arcane Lore before you add in Sage Lore and Vahnatai Lore. But, I found the answer. I was looking in the wrong slith outpost for the spell book I wanted. I confused the hidden sliths for the serpent cult sliths. Now all is right with the world. In the mean time, I did test out the answer from another topic about Dread Curse and you can just go ahead and do evil stuff while you're cursed and get cured once and it's all gone. Avernum is much poorer for it, but my party is wealthier.

  9. I went back in and looked, and I have the Blessed Athame still. I'm not sure WHY I can't read that other spell book, then. Something flaky. I'm pretty certain about the altar, though, as it was for a quest and I'd completed that quest MUCH earlier in the game. I'll go check a few more.

EDIT: Hm. Now I'm not sure what's going on with stuff. I'm probably just looking in the wrong place again for this stupid Move Mountains book. I'll go reread your topic on spell locations and see what I'm screwing up.

  10. I've been searching, but I don't see anywhere in the forums where the actual effect of the Dread Curse in A2:CS is explained. As far as I can tell, it isn't a penalty to your characters' effectiveness anymore. It seems to undo stuff you've done. I saw that I lost the Runic Blessing (or whatever that one was called for Sanctifying the altar in Elderan's tower). I seem also to have lost the Blessed Athame, as I know I collected that from the Halls of Chaos, but I am still unable to read the Move Mountains book in the Slith fort (had to figure out on here that was where my troubles were with that spell book as there is nothing in game to point you to that answer).

I picked up a Dread Curse for reading that stupid book in Elderan's tower and went straight back to the Tower of Magi and got it removed, but stuff seems to have been undone. I found at least one other altar I'd sanctified had been reset.

  11. Bradbury did one episode of the original series The Twilight Zone, two episodes of the relaunched 1980s The Twilight Zone, and a LOT of other film and TV work (including 58 episodes of Ray Bradbury Theater). Most famously as far as visual media goes, he wrote the screenplay for the John Houston film version of Moby Dick.
