  1. I've been searching for "lich" or "kavarus" throughout the board, and I'm sure I missed the discussion somewhere. Would someone mind explaining the strategy Jeff intended for me to defeat the lich Kavarus beneath the Skeletal Ruins? If the optimal strategy differs from the one Jeff probably intended, would you please explain both? I'm playing on Hard difficulty and have a hard time eliminating his summons to make room for fleeing north or south from the crystals.
  2. I've finally received the Aid Melanchion quest. Do I reach the Avernum series ending simply by defeating the Scourge, or must I defeat two of Melanchion's enemies (not necessarily the Scourge)?
  3. Are there two users named Thuryl here? I swear to the gods... reading from the start of this thread to the finish, I understood Thuryl until one of his recent posts veered in a direction I couldn't follow. If I have the willpower to go back and search for where I went astray, I'll quote the confusing statement here.
  4. I know I'll eventually join a famous wizard there, but I've already cleared out the enemies by sniping from the north side aerie. Are new enemies summoned for the epic battle, or is the epic battle located elsewhere?
  5. I remember this one, too. The barrier is below ground in a small cross-shaped room. To reach the barrier from the direction the OP describes, enter the small locked building above ground to the north of the entrance to the Grindstone giants' lair. There's even a sign by the door, but it says something along the lines of "giants have defaced this beyond legibility."
  6. If I'm not mistaken, you can change your traits by holding [sHIFT]+[D], typing "editor", clicking on "Spells/Traits" on your character's stat screen, and selecting new traits/ adding spells. Let me know if it works. I don't have access to my game right now.
  7. Unfortunately, you need to return to the gates of a friendly town. There are other ways to replenish energy, however: 1. Hold [sHIFT]+[D]. Type "imdrained". It's a cheat code, but if you already have a safe route to town, you shouldn't feel guilty for saving a little time. 2. Energy potions and energy elixirs replenish your energy. There may be other potions with restorative qualities. 3. First aid skill gives you some HP and Energy back after each battle. The level of regeneration increases with First Aid skill level (and Anatomy) and number/difficulty of enemies defeated. 4. A few NPCs have a dialogue option to restore your health and energy for free.
  8. Jeff should DEFINITELY have made all the squares in the circle activate, or at least the center square, but shades only appeared for me when I stood on this square (the "O"): X X X X X X O X X I would describe it as the "corner" of the 3x3 grid covered by the circle. This is the corner of the side facing Nociduas and the side facing the door you entered to start the fight. Let me know if it helps. You may have to attack Nociduas once (with anything) to trigger the message about his shield and the spirit circle. You may also have to wait a couple rounds in that spot I indicated before your first shade appears. Hell, make sure you've killed those Circle Protectors, too.
  9. Hmmm... it's reasonable to deactivate the spires leading to his room. Once you've done that, you could TRY and see if your lightning attack and other magicks are powerful enough to take down the spirits he summons during the Nociduas fight. If your attacks can keep taking out his summons, then you should be fine.
  10. Oh, I'm fine. I haven't lost a boat yet. I was just wondering if someone could lock him/herself out of finishing the game.
  11. Is it possible to run out of boats if I repeatedly take the one-way path from Grindstone to the Marauder hideout?
  12. Originally Posted By: Thuryl but from my perspective the best quest so far has been the one to get the papers from under the Great Portal. Maybe it bugged out when I played it, but I remember fleeing the imps that attack you before the sentinel room, and when I returned later, they were all gone. I just had to send one of my party members in to claim the papers and save the sentinels for a later day.
  13. Ah, well I forgot to destroy those spirit-capturing crystals Nociduas placed throughout the dungeon. That would have cut down significantly on the number of shades appearing. Either way, I beat him after a ton of cussing and reloading.
  14. How can you keep several shades alive? I'm only ever allowed two summons at once. Also, I'm getting ripped apart early by his flame aura + swarming summons + Nociduas Hunter magic attacks. I don't want to spoil the entire fight by being walked through it entirely, but I can hardly survive past the first pop-up message about your blows rolling off Noci's shield. EDIT: I've also hacked myself up to level 50 by now, and I'm still unable to kill the Nociduas Hunters as fast as he summons them.
  15. Would someone please be able to teach me how to calculate minimum-average-maximum damage outputs for the following weapon sets? 10 STR, 10 DEX, 10 MEL, 10 DW 1. Blessed Broadsword 12-36, Radiant Shortblade (DW) 16-32 2. Radiant Shortblade 16-32, Frozen Blade (DW) 11-33 3. Frozen Blade 11-33, Radiant Shortblade (DW) 16-32 After ranking the above sets by damage, would their ranks change if any other skills are added?
  16. Excellent answers all around. Since I'm itching to complete Gladwell's quests, is there someone who can post the ending text that mentions Spire when one has NOT fulfilled the "Mayor of Spire" quest? Second, I have a question about GIFTS (the spiders). Click to reveal.. In the giant lair beneath Grindstone, I can kill GIFTS in the giants' kitchen. Once the evil deed is done, I receive a Spider Egg Sac. Is this the object of more than one quest? If this particular egg sac fulfills Gladwell's quest, do I get any benefit from the fact that I've avoided having to anger the GIFTS later?
  17. Would someone please list how many different endings may be achieved based on killing NPCs or completing a faction's quests? I am only halfway through the game, but I would like to know how far I can progress before one of my actions narrows the endings down. Ex: 1. Gladwell dead, Melanchion dead 2. Gladwell dead, Starrus dead 3. Gladwell (complete), Melanchion dead and if you could indicate where endings differ only slightly... I'm predicting that 3a. [Gladwell (complete), Melanchion dead] doesn't differ as much from 3b. [Gladwell (complete), Melanchion (incomplete)] as it differs from 1 or 2.
  18. Uh... I... oh, uh... gee... I... dunno. I mean, Redmark is the current emperor, so... he won?
  19. I fled the Undead Spiral to kill the Chaos Wight much later, and it disappeared. So did the Samaritan sandals, apparently. I couldn't find them on the ground anywhere, and I hadn't looked around for dropped items when I originally fought my way out of that pit. The Emerald skeletons and seem to have vanished as well.
  20. Now is it also scripted so that I can't attack the Haakai properly without X being there? I was wondering if I could have my characters attack the Haakai in waves, where one survivor goes downstairs and through the town gate to heal everyone after they die, until the damage I've inflicted accumulates enough to trigger... whatever it is that grants me access the body. If it completely depends on the progression of the "X's Anvil" arc, just tell me "seriously, you can't get it yet."
  21. I recently wondered, ' should i have a fighter use the adrenaline rush battle discipline ' (or whatever it is) and run the distance to the body beside the Haakai, pick up the valuables, possibly die, then have the rest of my party calmly walk downstairs and revive him with the treasure in hand? Has everyone else been doing this? I'm still on Lark's Orb of Thralni assignment, so I could hold onto Demonslayer for a while. However, should I return Demonslayer when she asks for it?
  22. I call it insta-grinding. I turned in skribbane, but not before hacking my gold to a large sum and buying as much as possible, since - I figure - there are enough enemies out there that I could have accumulated the gold (and a little xp) by grinding anyway. Sadly, 12000 gold buys you barely a level of xp for your party. So, I got impatient and ended up just using the editor to raise my stats. Unfortunately, that is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from raising your level a few times (skills are so expensive, I would have had to rise MANY levels). In the end, I've clearly cheated, and I wish the editor would let me lower my stats again. Maybe I'll have to switch to Torment.
  23. Yes or No. I'm in Silvar, and some of the refugees say "I trust Holda." Does that mean she's in Silvar (or below it)?
  24. You CAN teach yourself a spell. When you use the Character Editor, click on traits/spells. You can then click on a spell to learn it.
