  1. I haven't tried drinking any of the beer / ale. Does it make you tipsy, like in the old exile/avernum? I believe it did in both of those. Kinda miss the gremlin wine, too...
  2. Sounds like a good thing to do. She is very annoying, with her superior attitude. And the fact that you find out that the Empire has been actively trying to sabotage Avernum.
  3. Still is a good way to heal up after battle, to have the grunts do it.
  4. Is to give a couple levels of priest to your meatheads and let them do all the post-combat healing for the group. Avoids wasting healing spells from the priest, and seems to use very little spell points even with intelligence of 6 or 7.
  5. I wish that HASTE meant what it says. The only way to truly "haste" seems to have been to consume potions. The haste spell gave any extra action point, but rarely resulted in any more attacks. I think that by partway through the game, melee characters have little to truly do other than sacrifice their bodies "to the cause" and hope to be healed before they pass out. They just sacrificed themselves until the mage & priest wiped everything out with area spells. I tried giving my tanks a couple levels of priest and a bit of intelligence but after awhile even the "call storm" spell did little but push the guys back a couple squares with little damage. At least when tanks got two swipes per round in E1 & A1, they could actually contribute to the cause. Now they are mostly pointless. I can't imagine a team of 4 melee characters surviving very long (not that I've ever tried that combo). They'd be totally wiped out. Also found that melee PCs also got stunned way too much, even with top-grade armor. Then they just got pounded for a couple rounds before they woke up. Those fancy bows seemed to have little impact after the halfway point as they barely did any damage. But maybe that's because I didn't put any more into bow skill after a bit.
  6. I'm most of the way through the game now, and have noted some very annoying enemies that made it easy to want to wipe them out. Pyrog comes to mind. Felt good to swipe the circlet from Spire's mayor Meena (good name for her). I'm thinking I'll try wiping out Thantria before the end of the game. Any others you have such feelings about?
  7. Thanks darint. I was wondering if the requirement was to take out the Giants. I'll just finish up Lost Barsh... and go take care of that.
  8. I can only seem to get up near Kyass' area, and there are rapids that prevent me from getting up into the Northern Waters. How do I get a boat up there?
  9. Pyrog is a delight to wipe out. So arrogant he's asking for it. I found that Invulnerability potions were crucial to survive and conquer.

Sounds like a joke now when a typical laptop has 1000x more RAM and 5000x more hard drive space than that whole computer system had. ---- Sorry for taking the discussion onto a totally different plane. Most users of this forum would be shocked to hear that a computer could actually function on so little resources considering what personal computers ( and macs ) have today.
  11. Subject line pretty well says it all. How do adventurers get to learn how to use the travel pylons?
  12. Thanks for the answer, Randomizer. To clarify, the appstore version puts the save files in ~Library/Containers/com.spiderwebsoftware.Avernum I found that it did not have an "Open Package" option. Instead it behaved like a folder. So I had to go further to find the location of the appStore version: A) ~Library/Containers/com.spiderwebsoftware.Avernum/Data/Library/Application Support/Avernum Saved Games and there were the Save0 -> Save19 folders. Meanwhile, the saved games from the SpiderWeb download (demo) were actually in: ~Library/Application Support/Spiderweb Software/Avernum Saved Games I moved the save folders from to A) and I was back in business. Thanks for the tip. Just clarified where things were in my case, which might help others. I'm sure lots will experience it. I would suggest that Jeff maybe writes some code to take care of that problem for us faithful patrons. For those on Lion, bear in mind that the library contents are, by default, hidden. You can find & install DesktopUtility, which will add a little menu on the right side of the menubar that sort of looks like a gear. Anyway, it lets you SHOW INVISIBLE FILES and SHOW USER LIBRARY. And its freeware.

  19. I've been checking the site for the Avernum remake every day. Anyone else doing that? Some days I've even checked twice.
  20. What potions did you like in the Avernum series? Invulnerability? That was probably my favorite -- could have used some against RedBeard in Avadon, but that's a different topic...
  21. I agree, Harehunter. As if a guy would be 'hiding' something valuable, and then advertise it with a switch on a wall. As if some of his own greedy minions wouldn't want to check it out. And advertising for any greedy adventurers "Here's where the loot is!". It is cheesy! /quote Having the buttons indicating that there is a secret door nearby seemed kind of cheesy when I first encountered them. /unquote Hey, how do I turn on HTML? In my replies, it says "HTML is disabled". I can't find a pref to fix that. Never used to have this issue.
  22. Thanks for reminding me of what it was called -- quickfire. Those were exciting times in the quest for...glory.
  23. The spell book for mages & priests changed quite dramatically each Exile episode, as I recall. It was strange that powerful ones suddenly got forgotten as time passed. One would have thought they'd have been retained in "real life." I recall one dungeon where you had to set off some device that started a raging fire that consumed the whole joint. You had to run and get out before getting crisped. I somehow recall you had to fight your way out, to boot.
  24. A simple "aardvarknum" might work to get it to the front of the alphabet, too...
