  1. Goblins. Goblins. Because as it was pointed out a while ago by Alorael, they are like cockroaches. They are everywhere. Besides, with a little incentive they may be trained to breed like mutant rabbits on a rampant heatathon. Also. Goblins in this world have not realized how smart and capable their cousins from others have become. Once they do, together with their uncountable numbers. . . Tremble with fear. The end is near. Horses have been known to evolve into intelligent beasts, and in some cases more than humans even. Horses in this world have not realized how smart and capable their cousins from others have become. Once they do, together with their invencible nature . . . Goblins On Horses. (admittedly less disgusting that goblins in horses, even (specially!!!) if only partially in) Hmmm.
  2. Colors. Once, because I intended on killing and massacring them horrendously sending weak creations to the sudden death in an attempt to maturely deal with my everyday life frustrations I named them after the source of all evil (at least one type of evil): Chavez. May he have an indigestion from rotten eggs. Anyway. Colors.
  3. Kel. RP. Yup. Wanted to join the one going on in the General boards but saw it too late. I'm waiting for the next one (though I've never RP in that fashion. Always a first time, right?) PS: RP you mean pen(cil) and paper?
  4. Maybe a hermit? Or an escape route? Or the site for a Vahnatai structure? Design flaw? A belvedere? When you play some of the scenarios that came with BoA be ready for more of these. If you haven't done so already. Hmmm.
  5. Ah, Silver Shadow, that would be telling. But if telling it would be, then so be it told. The Lady is behind that door on the odd days of the week, while the Tiger tends to prefer the even ones. However, this routine only takes place during the months when the last day is even, when it is odd, the routine alters slightly. During those months, which I'll call Odd Months, they both need to knock on the door before entering to ensure that it is not occupied. The Tiger prefers to stay inside on Tuesdays and Thursdays, as those are the days when the serviles tend to gather together in their towns to connive and discuss their future. Thus, few wander outside their villages for his prowling pleasures. But on the Second Tuesday of every Odd Month, as well as on the Fourth Thursday a few serviles are forced to scavenge around town for food, or simply to do other menial tasks. On those days, the Tiger TENDS to be prowling, so the door is free for the Lady to enter. The possibility of the serviles doing these on the afore-mentioned dates depend on the date in question. Due to an error in a Shaper experiment when those days are prime, a series of Randomized Events of Unspecified Yet Overltly Nasty Consequence tend to happen in the oustkirts of servile villages. This may be anything from a rogue creation, to a group of adventurers out to do some senseless killing to even that ever so mysterious and exquisitively random message from above System Error. Since those events are impossible to predict, the Tiger sometimes goes out, sometime he does not, sometimes he comes and goes through a short cut that allows him to return to the door before the Lady comes. This makes it difficult to elucidate who may be inside at the time. The Lady prefers Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Those days are best for her since they show the highest amount of Gentlemen (and Gentlewomen) callers who bored her ever so with their most of the times pathetic attentions. However, this is not always thus. The Lady, being a smart and practical Lady as she is, does not shun from any potential suitor, and the only reason she has not contracted the Eternal Bows Of Servitude is because she hasn't been asked by the right one. The possibility of this person is a certainty in her mind. A number of years ago she had a vision (its nature and how it came to be would be too long to elaborate in full detail here. Check out that and other adventures of the Lady in the unfortunately incomplete, "Adventures of the Lady in Godeland.") which showed her the person of her dreams (neither man nor woman, but a mutant transexual lororithm) This person was going to come to her on a Wednesday. The Wednesday would be a multiple of three. On those days, the Lady stays home and doesn't visit the door. The Tiger, though, doesn't know this. He has stumbled upon the empty room from time to time, but since he never passed simple algebra in his ferocious feline school, he hasn't realized the connection. So, on those special Wednesdays there may be a Tiger, or, AGHAST, the door may lead to empty room. Or one with a transient adventure who is tired of killing pixels and making decisions and is just eating a well derserved ripe apple (a macintosh, too.) (gotta go, so Weekends will have to wait for another day (if anyone knows what happens on those days, please!)) A final note, though. A very brilliant Shaper named Jaisonberg once tried to solve this mystery. Alas, brilliant as he was he could do nothing. But in a bit of a rash attack of nefarious mischeviousness he cursed the door. (a la if I can't know this no one will kind of nefarious mischeviousness) The curse is a simple yet devastating one. It works something like this: At any given moment the Lady or the Tiger may be beyond the door. However, the mere act of opening the door alters this fact. Oh well.
  6. Overwhelming, bad news on the SF front. From what I've read apparently Jeff is not going to do a game of that type. For starters he doesn't like the idea of using laser guns. I may be remembering this information wrong, though. If you can, getting the registered version for Nethergate is recommended. It's replayable, like the other SW games, and you'll have a neat experience doing so, specially if you like Romans. Not many RPGs where you can play Romans (hmm, what are the others? I don't know) Mutliple choices in any game are always nice. I wish that when Jeff re-did Exile he would have implemented more choices for the characters in the Avernum series. Maybe we could have worked for Empire instead of against it.
  7. Also, I noticed this too late, but if you still haven't been able to see the map, you can just link from the forum. In the first page of the Avernum Trilogy board are a series of links, one of them is called "Avernum Annotated Maps" this will take you to an indexed page (at least it did to me), click on the "old site" link and you'll have more options for maps for A1 and A2. Good luck!
  8. I think the door is one of the ones that lead to Monsters, Inc. They began expanding their business beyond Earth. Or maybe there's a Lady, or a Tiger. . .!
  9. Too true, Alorael. Too true. A system which will implement both would be great. And, now that I thought about it a little more, I guess you can use flags (or something like that) to add further dialogue options once certain events have happened. Good example the one about that Bill. . .
  10. Kel, you reminded me of something I'd forgotten. The dialogue! I'd rather see that kind of dialogue in Avernum. It seems to me, specially from the point of view of BoA, to give designers more freedom, you know? One of the problems I have right noe that I'm designing my first scenario is justly that. Most of the CRPGs follow the "we'll give you the dialogue options, choose one and that's that" a bit like the Choose Your Own Adventure family of books (a neat idea for books that I loved a kid, btw.) But the "word" system allows the possibility for the players to actually CHOOSE something by themselves if they have explored the world, it gives the game a bit more of a Text Adventure flavor. Maybe I also like it so much because I'm a big fan of IF. And, man, I also agree with you on your last comment, I'd rather see a Nethergate 2 than an Avernum 4. Take care!
  11. Hello. It ain't that difficult to spell Vahnatai. Here's a Quick and Dirty Guide (easy to use) that may help in what appears to be a more difficult task than it actually is. -Tai --> rhymes with "tie" which is that annoying thing that they make you wear in offices so you look like a clown and, in other words, don't differentiate yourself from the rest of the sheep. Though you can still represent your individuality with funky designs. "tie" is also a verb used when you put together knots (which are not negatives with a kilo before them). It can also be what happens when a game ends up without a winner or a looser. However, -Tai, can be more easily related to "thai" which may a food or someone who comes from thailand. It is of UTMOST imprtance to remember that there is NO "H" in the -Tai of the Vahnatai. -Na- --> means nothing. Rhymes with "Ma" which may be a short form of "Mom." It can also be a very informal (and only politely used in conversational, not written, English as long as it is understood that it is Very Informal Conversation English (VICE for short, no relation with any of the minor vices such as smoking, drinking, or drugging ugly old ladies poodles.) Example: "Don't touch ma thing." Vah- this is the MOST important syllable and one that often brings problems in the spelling of this revered race. NOTICE the "H" in it. THE ONLY "H" in the word! It is similar in sound to "Bah" an expression commonly used to express, in simple monosyllabic terms, that you don't care for ma tie, for instance. The only difference, but an important one, is that the "Bah" for distaste has what is called in some countries a "Tall B" thik of it, if you will, as the "B" for Burrito. Or "B" for "Boob" if that helps you more. The "V" in the "Vah-" for the Vahnatai is commonly associated with "Victory." Although you may think of it as the "V" for "Vini.Vidi.Vici" if you want to. In fewer words: Vahnatai has Three "A" and only ONE (1!) "H" which is properly placed before after the first (1st!) "a" and before the ONLY "n" in the word. This is a necessarily abridge version of the guide. For more info look for the article by Harry Festoon and Castor Jungens "Vahnatai: Why Is It So Bloody Difficult To Write It Properly" in Journal of Ermarian Studies XXII, pgs. 234-289. Hope this has helped. As for the Map for the Strange Cave. Go here: http://www.silverchat.com/~silver/ One of the links will take you to an Awesome annotated maps page.
  12. Boy. This board is so deserted. Shame that more people don't play this game. Just finished playing it after a few years. So, to add something to this post. Prefer Nethergate, but with these things from Avernum: The automap. The one in Nethergate is a bit too big. Giving items to others. Disliked having to type "g" each time. Ditto for dropping. What could Avernum learn from Nethergate? Spells. Spells. Spells. (why was the amount of spells reduced for Avernum?!?!?!?!?!!!???) More than spells, though, spell schools. Nice touch. The extra person in the party. I miss like all hell the 6 character party from Exile. At least in Nethergate I could get 5, and 6 momentarily. Yup. In BoA you can get an extra person. Sure. Now, this may be only my computer, but when I get the extra person the game moves all sluggish. Sucks. And there were other things which I didn't write down and forgot. BoA question regarding Nethergate: Can I use the graphics in Nethergate for BoA?!? Because if so. . . I can use elves in an adventure. Drows too.
  13. Yeah it was short. Even playing two sides. I like the fact that it is the only "one-shot" game from SW. The others have sequels, even editors. I was hoping that JV´s unknown project was something along the lines of Nethergate: another stand alone game with a revised engine, although the current engine is fine. Here´s hoping more people pick it up and play it again, or for the first time. Besides: how many RPGs allow you to play Romans?
  14. Coincidentally I grabbed it today to play again. It's been a few years. I'm gonna go for Romans. Love magic, but something about the Romans I like a lot. I think it's the cool way that Jeff captured the Roman spirit without romantizicing them. I've admired the Romans (part of the Romans, not all!) since I was a kid. Anyway, were244, you're not the only one still interested in this game. Glad to see I'm not the only one either. Cheers!
  15. Hey! I like it. Keep it up. The "you" question. I don't mind it. "you" is weird to read as the main character of any story, but in rpg you do see it, as pointed earlier, in Choose Your Adventure kind of literature (word used loosely for some of those books. . .) However, you may want to think about using "I" or a name, any name, if you want to sell it. Since the "you" will get into many people's skins. Good luck!
  16. Hey! I'm thinking about doing one. First time, though. . . But I already have a title (yippey!) "A Dance in Chaos: Livestock Insurrection" It's about Livestock lycanthropes, you know, werechickens, werepigs, werecows, etc. If all goes well it's going to be the first part of a series, which will include, beholders (not eye beasts), clones, planes, gods and, of course, necromancers. If all goes well. . . Hopefully the first one will be ready in a couple of months. I had a question: Is it okay if the scenario takes place in a world other than the one of Avernum? Or is there some unwritten rule that scenarios should be part of that world? I'm glad too see so many people interested in making scenarios fro BoA. It seems I need to download and register a copy of BoE since there are some many over there. Cheers!
