  1. I just hope it will be updated sooner or later with the better game mechanics of the later games.

    I actually hate myself for agreeing with you. It was the first computer game i got. And i really like it. The story and the options.

    But i replayed the game recently. Quite successfully even. And it pained me.

    I guess what bothers me the most is the limited money. And spells.

  2. I'm not sure how mechanics works in G1, but there is the infinte X living tool in the area past Pentil, somewhere near the bottom of the screen, that pretty much renders mechanics moot excluding a few places.

    Mines. But yah the x living tool on a cryoa nest might have been a bug. You can only get it if you have no living tools in your inventory though. If you do it will count as 0

  3. They are shaped as all creations into being dependant on shapers or other form of guidance. Same with magic etc.. That is made so that they don't go rogue. Along with the fact that the majority of menial work related serviles are shaped into not being smart. Which is why with enough leadership you can make most creations do your will. It also seems to cause them varying ammounts of discomfort to disobey their masters and the majority prefers doing their tasks as it makes them "happy" and gives them a sense of purpose.

    I could explain further but i'd be majorly spoiling the first two games. But i like the analogy you made there :p

  4. I feel like the french revolution is perhaps a decent metaphor given how messy it was and how the revolutionary government got so bloodthirsty. Except the royals got overthrown too quick. Most real world rebellions tend to be rather brief, though the current Syrian situation is a similar sort of stalemate to what GF has. Perhaps the Iranian revolution where the Sha's monarchy was replaced by an equally extreme and totalitarian theocracy is a good representative of the Shapers vs Drakons? The palestine-israel conflict where it's a long drawn out war between two sides with valid points but questionable methods? Really though I don't think there's any exact parallels to the real world but rather the Geneforge story draws on bits and pieces of multiple historical events, which is better storytelling anyways.

    I think the syrian civil war provides the best example as the rebels too have various reasons to overthrow al assad and markedly various long term objectives and finally various degrees of ruthlessness. All in all the rebels form a loose aliance against the government. Then there are moderate rebels and extremist rebels etc. And al assad was totalitarian(although not nearly as much as his father quite like the shapers in g3, g4 and g5 arent nearly as bad as the ones that rulled in the times of sucia) however syria did have stability and relativelly good standarts of living not to mention really secular government(not sure how this equates to the shapers but point is like shapers, his rules had good and bad sides)

    One marking difference between this world and that world is after the deposition of one leader there is a severe lack of will to depose another leader as happened in the drakon ending for g5. In reality for instance look at ukraine. They pretty much threw out yakunovich because they didnt like him. Poroshenko at the moment has a historically low aproval rating( worse than yakunovich at the height of the protests and i read somewhere that worse than assad but i do not know for sure) and there are no protests or uprisings. I think real people get more tired of war and instability much faster than in the games.

  5. Again, Vinfen suddenly pulled a new living situation out of thin air for me. I'm going to check the conditions of the place tomorrow just in case, but I'm told there's no major problems like drug dealers or structural problems and I expect I'll take this opportunity.

    It's an individual apartment in Amesbury, within walking distance of downtown, also run by Vinfen like this place, with the same subsidy.

    Still, someone is coming today to investigate my claim of human rights violations here. Even if I move out I want to make sure they don't just forget my complaints and make my three not-disgusting housemates continue to live in filth.

    Awesome! This is great i really hope the other house is good and has boundary concious housemates. All the best will ya? And its admirable that you still would care about said horrible living conditions.

  6.

    begintalknode 42;

    state = 20;

    nextstate = -1;

    condition = gf(100,12) == 1;

    question = "The papers were destroyed in the fight. They're gone now. (Lie.)";

    text1 = "Greta nods slowly. _I see. I see. That is very ... plausible. Believable, in a way._ But you can plainly see it in her eyes. She doesn't believe you.";

    text2 = "_Then it is time for me to give you your next orders. I will proceed north to Burwood Province. You will stay here in the fens. You will fight the Shapers. You will clean up the excess rogues._";

    text3 = "_For now, you will need to stay out of rebel-controlled lands. Just a ... precaution. Perhaps, later, we will be able to allow you in. But I think we are safest if you stay here._";

    text4 = "You turn to go. As you are about to leave the room, she says, _Wait. I ... I don't have enough help. I do not trust you. And yet I have to trust you. I need to give you one more chance._";

    text5 = "_You've done much for us in the past, enough to earn my accepting this ... shaky story. If you betray us, our forces in Burwood are strong enough to deal with you. Go through the north gate. Go north to Derenton Freehold, on the coast._";

    text6 = "_If you betray us, well, our forces in Burwood are strong enough to deal with you. Go through the north gate. Go north to Derenton Freehold. It is on the coast. And I curse us for our weakness that makes me have to trust you._";

    code =

    set_flag(44,13,5);

    toggle_quest(65,1);

    sf(44,10,1);

    toggle_quest(64,3);

    if (gf(100,1) < 5)

    sf(100,1,5);

    if (gf(100,0) <= 90)

    rs(6);

    else rs(5);

    break;

    Iirc she doesn't say line 5 if you helped only the shapers. I'll be there maybe tomorrow or so, I can make a screen then.

    I remember her giving the same speach even if i kill moseh. But general crowley gives you an alternative route to borrowood he says you can use it if the rebels are against you. So i assume there is a possibility for them to actually disavow you.

  7. Ok, so i just repaired moseh(I'm not entirelly sure why. But to be honest the wastern rise is easy to travel and leads to a major outpost right after) I'm planning on killing shaftoe and eliza to make up to the rebels. So my main questions are. Will the shapers still trust me if i give the papers to greta? Will the rebels still trust me if i hand them to miranda? I want to keep everybody friendly and trusting for as long as i can. Usually i'd use the iloveserviles/ihateserviles cheat but i dont think g4 has faction related cheats. Also any tips on killing shaftoe? He is considerably powerfull if i remember right. Even when i start with the minds its insane. So any advice would be welcome

  8.

    Owenrus, there is also Telegin in G3 who is looking for their expedition in the Inner Keep.

    Wasn't masha also looking for the expedition? Yeah... I'll look for telengin.

    Forgive me folks i shall replay the series presently and avoid spewing manure in such a confident manner in the future.

  9. Dry peak is in g4. But not completelly. Only a toll gate to it. Its between dera reaches and ilya province. You also find out that there is a place called morass between burrowood and mera tev. The ashen islands are north east of the map above poryphora Sucia island is on the east coast they say not far. If im not mistaken its 200 kilometers or 200 miles. But then a lot of things don't fit right since it is said the proto shapers invaded terrestria from the east but then there is some mention in g5 that the western cities are the oldest and most civilised lands( even if geneforge 3 says the same of poryphora). Plus other than g1 i think the only sholai you meet is masha in geneforge 5 in mera and it is said sholai lands are to the east in g1. So geneforge has a fair ammount of discrepancies. But if we're to go by g5 cannon maybe sholai lands and sucia are to the west. This is all speculative though.

    EDIT:see nim I have made some mistakes.

    EDIT 2: WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH MY MEMORY! SEE TRIUMPH TOO. ITS PORYFORA. PERIKALIA IS THE G5 CITY STORM PLAINS. this is freaking embarassing.....

  10. I'm not american. My nationalities are likelly as unnamerican as it gets so forgive me from commenting as follows. No. Syphooning money out of the rich doesnt cut it. But taxing according to income will. Unfortunatelly of unemployment is as bad as you make it seem, taxes alone won't cut it unless you solve that problem. How about all college courses having a mandatory entrepeneurship unit. And the government creating market rules and regulations to give small businesses a little edge for competition in a market where big companies bully and drown the rest. How about giving a significant although not severe tax to insurance companies and the fund collected be exclusivly alocated into giving health services to those who can't afford it. Of course with lobying now a days and dependance on sponsors for an election campaign that is very unlikelly to happen.

    I'm sorry its like that all mighty doer of stuff. Not that its any consolation but most of the rest of the world isnt much better. I hope you get some kind of independance soon.

    My point is, its easy to invent excuses for bad situations. But that doesn't make them better.

  11. Unfortunatelly the game plays in a way that is best if you don't give any opinions at least until you need the favour of a particular faction. And most notable there isn't any middle term really which is why one of the tips/hints given in every geneforge game is choose well what you say because word will get around. But yes. I agree i remember consistently having this exact problem on g3 until i just skipped any opinion for when i needed a faction's favour. In geneforge 5 i think they all trust you the same. The hard part is getting them to accept you joining which depends on your reputation.

    Also *THIS MIGHT BE A MINOR SPOILER* but since you believe that Astoria is your to go faction, you will need slightly pro rebel reputation to join her as she has mostly the same opinion as you do.

  12. There is a word for accidental, unplanned things that turn out for the better; serendipity. I think the lack of closure over their deaths is powerfull enough that it doesnt matter wether intentional or accidental. I think it was duck's intention to point out that this part can be used by other developers to the same gutwrenching effects. Which honestly im torn between telling him to go do something censored( light heartedly though) and applauding his insight on the recipies to good plots.

    Well written though.

    Also this part is what makes avernum 2 my favorite even if it has a complete lack of factions. I remember that i too loaded and reloaded to save more of the vahnatai. At one point im like.. screw it. And hardcore cheated to get them to survive the attack. Even using an absurd amount of items and spells and having infinite energy some ammount dies(but most can survive). To find that my efforts were pointless was devastating really.

    Also the game shows quickly how vahnatai are less prejudiced than humans. Humans were quick to discriminate nephils and sliths and a lot of other different beings for the actions of some.
