  1. That would in general require higher resolution bitmap assets... and that seems unlikely. I would love to have higher resolution text, though.
  2. A potential benefit of remakes beyond the already mentioned graphics improvements, mechanics changes, and ability to run on modern operating systems without an emulator are enhancements to the user interface. With hindsight, it's possible to improve the interface so that it is just as useful without getting in the way of the game. I think this is one of the major improvements seen in A:EftP over previous Avernum releases.
  3. Oh well, why not answer? What's the worst that could happen? 1. What is your age? (Be approximate, if you'd like) I was born in the middle of the Carter administration. 2. What part of the world do you live in? In which part of the world were you born? What countries have you lived in? I live in one of the many places that claims to be the Silicon Prairie. I was born in the Hoosier state. I have only lived in North America. 3. What is your native language? In what languages are you proficient? I speak and write American English. I do not claim to be proficient in any human language. 4. Describe your ancestry. It is probably some mix of English, Irish, French, and German. 5. Describe your gender identity and sexual orientation. I am a straight male. 6. Do you have any religious or spiritual beliefs? If so, describe them. In what religious tradition(s) were you raised, if any? I am a deist. The universe follows natural laws established by God, the "first cause", but the Creator does not intervene in the creation. Prayer has no supernatural effect, and an "afterlife" is unlikely. Atheists find me too wishy-washy. Everyone else believes I am an atheist. 7. What is your relationship status? Do you have any children? I am married with n children. (2 < n < 4) 8. Describe your social class. Have you always been in this class? I am in the middle class; I was raised in a working class family. I was in the first generation of my family to graduate with a bachelors degree. 9. Have you ever served in the military? If so, what division? I have not. 10. What is your occupation (or former occupation)? What is your highest level of education (and your degree, if applicable)? I am a software developer for a firm whose products include mathematical applications and "computational knowledge engine". I hold a BS in physics and an MS in computer science.
  4. Looks like I should forego that run at the presidency.... Extraversion: 43 Nothing really surprising here; I'm not cheerful, gregarious, or friendly, but I do like to boss people around. Agreeableness: 54 Moral, altruistic, and sympathetic... and I make sure to tell everyone. Also, I trust no one. Conscientiousness: 41 Achievement-striving of 91 with self discipline 0... I wonder why I haven't defended my dissertation, yet? Neuroticism: 99 Ummm.... no comment. Openness to Experience: 99 I wonder how this correlates with neuroticism.... According to my wife, these scores aren't totally inaccurate, but maybe a bit at the extremes.
  5. Yep. That's what I mean that the situation has become desperate. The crystals are enormously valuable, so the miners would never have let the mine fall to goblins if Avernite society wasn't in colapse.
  6. See:http://jeff-vogel.blogspot.com/2014/09/on-new-games-rewrites-and-pain-of.html
  7. Ok. I guess the purpose of the discovery was just to demonstrate how desperate the situation in Avernum had become that people were just leaving nearly priceless treasures unclaimed.
  8. I considered doing that, but I was concerned about image copyright policies on such sites. I would expect fair use to apply to uploading a screenshot here; I would be less certain on, i.e., imgur, tinypic, &c. I may just be paranoid.
  9. We may be talking about the same thing. I took a screenshot of the crystals and their location, but I'm having trouble finding a way to embed it in the post. The in-game text states: I really expected there would be more to these crystals (especially what happens to the Great Portal and the end game quests).
  10. Early in Avernum 6 the party encounters a collection of supposedly rare, large crystals in the goblin occupied cave. This *seems* like an important find, especially given the importance of a rare, large crystal at the end of the story. However, my party never did ended up using (or even telling anyone about) the crystals. Did I miss something in my play-throughs? Was this a potential path for the last quest that ultimately was left on the cutting room floor?
  11. Three things: 1. On Mac, Full Screen mode uses the OS X 10.7+ full screen API. I prefer to play in full screen rather than windowed, but this has the consequence that I cannot easily switch to other applications or receive notifications. If the full screen game opened into a separate space, then I could more easily switch to other applications and receive notifications. 2. Gesture support for scrolling merchant lists or long text. 3. Battle speed adjustment. Usually battle speed is perfect, but sometimes I just want to to go faster so that I can get on with exploring.
  12. I created this account for the express purpose of replying to this thread. Separate maps for outdoor exploration, battles, towns, and dungeons is one of my favorite features of Avernum. It gives the world a sense of scale that is difficult to achieve with a unified dungeon-world map. In theory one could make a *vast* single world map, but that would require a lot of work, and much of the travel over that map would probably be boring. A fun unified map is almost by necessity going to be smaller. It loses the sense of scale that I personally find essential to the feeling of exploration.
