Geneforge 1: game-killing lag

Recommended Posts

I see this issue has been posted elsewhere and appears to still be unresolved, but

I thought I would try to get a little feedback.

I am basically unable to run Geneforge 1 due to an extremely jumpy mouse cursor

and slowdown throughout the game.

My PC specs are as follows:

- Windows 8 retail 64-bit

- Intel i7 950

- 12 GB DDR3 RAM

- Nvidia GTX 670 with latest drivers

I have tried so many many things to solve this, including:

- rebooting

- reinstalling the game

- running Compatibility Administrator and turning on "ForceDirectDrawEmulation"

- running the game in various compatibility modes

- changing mouse speed

- shutting down all other programs

- installing and reinstalling the newest Nvidia drivers.

- reinstalling mouse software

- cursing loudly

I had a similar problem with Arcanum but running it in a window solved it.

If only I could run this game in a window.

Anyway, I would like to hear from people who have no problems running the game

under Windows 8 64-bit. There is likely something you are doing right that I

am doing wrong.

Thanks!

I too am running under Windows 8 64-bit. Tell me, hmmm. I have no problems at all, except when guards/npc say something as they walk, it lags (not delay lag, but the fps drops somewhere below 13-16). It is normal for Geneforge 1,2,3 as they have pretty rusty game engines 4 and 5 are quite new.

I don't know if this solves the problem, but try running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2 or 3. Or on Windows 7.

Right click Geneforge (preferably the shortcut)>Properties>Compatibility>Tick the box, then choose.

I don't really have a problem on lags, I used to have a netbook once. And no, your PC specs are super, you don't need to upgrade some video card thinggy or something. Geneforge 1-5 ran well on our old PC, and yes, it's still laggy.

As Halt said, you might as well try to run it in a window.

Welcome to Spiderweb Software. Please leave any remaining sanity on the door. Looking for ways to lessen lag on a 12 GB RAM + intel core i7 machine might help feeding it to the fluffy turtles.
