A:EftP - So I finally got dispel barrier ...

I have done all the quests in the upper right quadrant of the map and my characters are around 12 and 13.

 

Are there any places that I MUST return to find portals? So far I found an interesting one in Formello but I certainly remember being annoyed quite a few times in the past.

 

Any tips?

You can't do every thing when you first come to it. So head south to the Tower of Magi to get better spells and into the Great Cave to the west for more quests.

 

Also in the Tower of Magi, upstairs in the northwest, is some one that can help you use the pylon system to reach major cities. It saves time later when you want to hop around to finish things.

Cotra and Silvar has pylons too and if you haven't been there then go grab quests (some are easy and some require later doing) and if you have money then get lvl 2 icy rain to caster(s)from Dranlon and buy a boat (Cotra is cheapest) and go kill Sliths at west from Dranlon and south from Dranlon.

 

Also if you head to ToM then Icy Rain is needed too.

You definitely want to visit the Tower of Magi in order to

activate the pylons for teleportation. This will save you a lot of time very soon when you are exploring all over Avernum and quests might take you all over.

 

Additionally, most of the pylons

can be found in the major towns, i.e. those with mayors, and a few important places of interest.
