  1. Quote: Imagine that random battles that took place outside, on the world map, being self-contained "maps" that disappeared once you clicked the "end combat" button - so any loot you couldn't carry (see obsolete encumbrance gripe above) would vanish into the Aether, never to be seen again. And for god's sake, don't drop anything important in a random battle - you could lose it forever if you forgot to pick it back up before clicking "end combat". this still happens in a1r, except the no encumbrance and junk bag things which help you carry it all out of the battle.
  2. i'd be interested in trying out those edited graphics. in windows version though, but it shouldn't be hard to adjust them to work in it.
  3. running it in xp mode won't work for him since he has win xp already, not 7. he could try running it in the older compatibility modes like 98 or so though.
  4. is your system 64 bit? as far as i know, 64 bit systems have a lot of trouble with most 16 bit and some 32 bit programs. i don't think the system's faulty here though, because then the game wouldn't run at all. it starts though, just with no graphics, so it could be a graphic card problem. you can download new drivers for your graphic card to see if that fixes it. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
  5. well, the troubleshooting page says: Quote: Occasionally, the versions of Avadon being sold on 3rd party sites (like Steam and GamersGate) for Windows do not work correctly. This can be because of a system incompatibility with their software or problems running OpenGL. Should you purchase the game from Steam/Direct2Drive/GamersGate and find that it does not work correctly, take the following steps. 1. Download the demo from our site and run it. If it works, skip to step 3. 2. Download the DirectX version of the game here. Move it into Program Files/Spiderweb Software/Avadon and run it. If it works, go to step 3. 3. Should our version of the game function, write us at support@spiderwebsoftware.com requesting an Avadon key. Give us the any registration key that was provided to you. We will get you up and running. 4. If you are still having problems, contact us at support@spiderwebsoftware.com. We apologize for the difficulty and inconvenience, and we'll do what we can to get you up and running.
  6. ftp://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/win/AvadonDX.zip does it happen with this version too, or just the original opengl one? as far as i know some of the radeon graphic card series have iffy opengl support, so it could be related.
  7. Quote: I too have this coloring issue. Are you by any chance using an older Apple computer. Jeff has mentioned that this is linked to PPC machines. nope. a 32 bit windows xp.
  8. yeah, i had the junk bag problem too. most of the stuff is sold, but some persistently stayed, like the bricks you get from the brick spawner item. i had to throw them out one by one and litter the floor with them. also another, though very minor graphical one i noticed was that if you hold shift to see the names while your characters are off screen, the "roster" image will turn all green, or sometimes purple for no reason.
  9. Quote: Only in the sense that it's science-related. well, ok, evolution itself isn't fiction, but artificially-boosted one used to create those fictional effects like telepathy definitely is.
  10. Quote: Alorael, who is more curious about what gave telepathy its wide-ranging sci-fi legitimacy. Or, more particularly, why only telepathy. i'm guessing the whole idea, that an evolved human will possess a superior brain, and with it be able to do more stuff, such as telekinesis, telepathy and such. evolution is kind of scifi-related.
  11. Quote: 2. Make the center on PC mechanism work all the time and not only some of the time. this. i got so used to that in a1-3, that in 4-6 it felt really awkward that the camera didn't center on the player character until he went off screen. it worked fine in geneforge since you just used the mouse, but in avernum i always use the keypad to move, so i like having my character in the center all the time. i'd also like for the ability to fight in town mode to be back. being forced into battle mode every time some small fry shows up on screen slowed the gameplay down too much.
  12. yeah, but then you usually know you're screwing with stuff in a way you probably shouldn't. just breaking into places you don't even know about is different, i thought i was just breaking into some house/warehouse to loot it like i do in all games/scenarios, and then suddenly stuff attacks me and a quest bugs out.
  13. serious tool use, yeah (60). i like getting into places i shouldn't be in. maybe setting the door difficulty to 200 or higher would prevent that.
  14. is it ok to still report bugs? because i entered with a slightly overpowered singleton character, and killed the beasts in the fort's shed before getting the quest to do that (and the game told me i finished a quest i never started for the guy i didn't talk to yet). then went to talk to the colonel, and while there was an option to tell him "i killed the beasts" at first, it vanished forever after i officially got the quest from him. couldn't get him to acknowledge that anymore, and were it not for a save i'd get stuck. after i picked the "i killed the beasts" option and then got his quest, it also got reset and asking for next mission made him tell me i didn't kill the beasts yet. edit: talking to taylor in the graveyard will also have him reply with one of father hammond's replies about the dead beast. i dunno if he even should be there at the moment you enter it for the first time, it just sort of feels off to have him in the building near one of the coffins.
  15. Quote: Ah, interesting indeed. But I wouldn't want to ruin anything for myself. yep, same thing. even though i'm a windows user and i'll have to wait few extra months, that thing still has way too much info that'd spoil the game for me. it just wouldn't be as fun to play when it finally comes out.
  16. Quote: If one were to remove the last component in the paths of these URLs (Avernum6Demo.extension), one would have a URL referring to a directory by means of FTP. and since it's all open to the public viewing, you can find some interesting things to read in one of the links. things that probably shouldn't be placed just like that in a public folder.
  17. i've been trying to make it so that the game would accept a separate set of sprites for the playable character instead of the shared one, and it worked very well for g1, 3, 4 and 5, but g2 stubbornly rejects all attempts. any time i try to add a template with more than two tmp_num_icons the game will crash on loading, and the only way it actually works is by removing the existing templates, which obviously isn't a good idea since it destroys something else in the game. does anyone here know of a way to go around that, or will g2 be the only game where changing the character's graphics to an edited one will cause all npcs to do that too? edit: already using the newest version, 1.0.2, so updating won't fix the problem.
  18. yep, a resource editor can see them, along with the area graphics and some icons, cursors, some script items, sound effects etc. Quote: That said, it's rather surprising that A1 would store its graphics in the exe when all the other games before and after (as far as I know) did not. i guess it's because it was a new engine at the time. after the engine got upgraded for a2 it probably didn't need to refer to stuff within the exe anymore or something.
  19. the sprites only. the portrait's from google image search. i can do sprites okay since i've been working with them for years, but can't really do artwork beyond pencil lineart.
  20. i did that last time i decided to replay the games for some variety (i went the extra mile and drew some character sprites too though), and i can say that yeah, in a2-6 you can easily replace the graphics with your edited ones. a1's isn't as easy though since as far as i know the character portraits are embedded into the exe, at least in the pc version.
