  1. Just to be sure. Is this where you are looking for Solberg?

Also, the two times you always want to do a save in Spiderweb games are:

1 - When you are supposed to meet someone somewhere

2 - When you are supposed to escort someone somewhere

  2. If you are going to start with Nethergate: Resurrection I would suggest being a Celt, then a Roman. Or, as someone once said, if you enjoy a little magic be a Celt, if you enjoy being hated and despised it's Roman all the way.

  3. I would be tempted to start with the games that were made with older engines and won't be remade - namely Nethergate: Resurrection and the Geneforge series. If the dated graphics don't bother you, you will really enjoy them. They are terrific games that might not run on many computers in the future.

  4. 1. Avernum 6 is not an easy game, but your abilities will determine the level you enjoy the most. You can always switch the difficulty (under Options) to Hard and see how you like it. If it is too tough you can always switch back to Normal without having to restart.

    2. You can get other people to craft potions and wands for you. There are also people who can make custom armour and clothing for you. You cannot make those yourself however.

  5. Um, the blonde with the staff is not Nathalie, she wears her hair differently. The blademaster in that picture does look a bit like the PC blademaster, though. (The cloaked figure is probably just someone walking guard beside the corpse wagon.)

Actually, it looks to me like a new artist is doing Avadon II. If that is the case I wouldn't expect all the characters to look identical in the two games. Could be wrong of course, but the basic artistic style looks different to me.

  6. Jeff has worked on this problem in the past. It actually is better now than it used to be. I don't know what the internal details are, but I do know it is not an easy fix. It's basically something you are probably going to have to live with since it doesn't cause a total crash and Jeff is trying to get his new game out the door.

  7. The only thing that gave me pause in the "new screenshots" post was the comment that the game will hopefully be out this fall. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the game release doesn't slip until winter, but that sounds like a possibility. However, on the bright side, it might mean that Jeff is building a big game with lots of wonderful content. Will feel better when we hear that the first beta has started.....

  8. Okay - I'm basically at the end of my first ever Torment playthrough of a Spiderweb game, and I have a question.

The battle with Grah-Hoth was doable because I took Randomizer's advice about the corridor behind the throne. The whole gang went to the back of the tunnel and my tank duked it out with the monsters. Since they couldn't see us, the second and third wave of bad boys never even came after us. After we did in Grah-Hoth, my tank fought a delaying action while the rest of the group looted the treasure and headed for the exit. The whole battle didn't even require my using an Invulnerabilty potion.

So, the good news is that I'm loaded with resources for the final battle. The bad news is that the guards are so tough on Torment that I can't make any progress through the corridors. Having come this far I would hate to have to turn the difficulty down to finish the game, but that is starting to look like a real possibilty. Any ideas?

  9. Yeah but thats the problem. The game is meant to be a party game but only 1 class in Geneforge 1-3 uses creations-The shaper. Even in Geneforge 4 and 5, Only Lifecrafter and Shocktrooper really use creations. The sorceress uses them minimally. Every time I play one of the gene forge games, I always pick 4-5 skills and it always fails. I usually pick strength, melee, quick action endurance and a little mechanics and thats it. I don't bother with luck and shaping skills as I don't like creations.

I would play an agent but a spell caster isn't really a cool character class. I usually like ranged weapons experts or warriors as my main character in rpgs. Would it be ideal to use a guardian or agent as a ranged weapons expert and go all out with haste and what not for extra attacks. Or is melee more viable. If someone can tell me what Im doing wrong I'd like to know because I have Geneforge 1-5 and Avernum 4-6 and I haven't completed one save G1.

I just pulled up a late-game save from G4. My Agent was specialized in Melee, Battle Magic and Blessing Magic. There were obviously other points spread around in Quick Action, Mechanics, etc. Didn't mess with ranged weapons because she used Battle Magic for that need. Her points were heavy in Strength, but she was also high in Endurance and not too bad in Dexterity and Endurance. She was your basic, all-around fighting machine.

  10. I myself am really getting into games like Eschalon, The Quest, Fallout 1 and 2. I like games like that because you are only controlling one character so you have to be very careful with your build. Its too bad there aren't many other games ilke those mentioned. I happen to think that jeff could make an awesome solo character rpg like all the other old school ones. Party combat is fun, but getting through a game with a lone hero is pretty friggin epic.

If anyone knows of any other solo rpgs that are turn based, post them here.

Actually I played the whole Geneforge series as a solo Agent - no creations and no extra party members. It was great fun.

  11. Sorry I probably wasn't making myself clear before! When I said "I'm definitely going to buy the other games in the App Store", I meant the other Spiderweb Software games! I've started playing Avernum: Escape from the Pit first, just because it had the same subtitle as Exile. I'm really enjoying this one a lot even if I haven't got very far yet. Are there plans to make Exile 2 and 3 into the new engine? How about the old Avernum games, because I've never played Avernum 4-6? At the very least it'd be neat if there were iPad versions made available.

Jeff has already announced that Avernum: Crystal Souls (A2) is going to follow Avadon 2. And, it's pretty hard to imagine that Avernum 3 isn't also in line. That leaves Avernum 4-6, and A6 is already out for the iPad. It would seem that he might eventually put the entire Avernum universe out for the iPad community.

  12. I just got finished playing Avadon HD on my iPad, and for me it was really the best game that the iPad has to offer. ...

I can't wait to see what happens next though, in spite of this. Hurry up, Spiderweb Software!

IMHO there are a few more games you might want to try on the iPad. Namely, Avernum:EftP and Avernum 6 from SpiderWeb. These suggestions ought to keep you busy for quite a while - they are all wonderful RPGs.

  13. If you want to make your life simpler you might want to check out Randomizer's Strategy Central post. There is a section that lists all of the items you should save for quests. While it might feel a bit like cheating to look at the list, it can be quite irritating to have to remember all of the places you've been so you can run around picking up bottles of leftover wine....

  14. Why? I'm expecting beta in parallel, maybe even finally using code that doesn't require so much porting. If he's going to release "simultaneously," I think he's going to actually have the versions available at the same time.

One big problem is the difference between the two mouse versions and the iPad version. For example, all instructions have to be changed from "right click..." to "touch your finger...", etc . And, the sun icon that allows you to use an inventory item in the Mac and PC versions actually has no iPad equivalent. Touching an item on the iPad pulls up a mini-menu allowing you to manipulate said item.

Fly-specking the iPad version just to remove the mouse references is a big job. And, there were definitely some platform specific bugs found during the beta for Avernum:EftP. Those realities make me wonder how simultaneous the iPad beta can be with the other two. The waiting is just killing me.....
