As soon as you click the Post Reply button on the topic page, or after you've typed up your reply and clicked the Add Reply button? If the former, I don't know what's wrong. It might have been "<" and ">" signs (I've just posted them here without trouble though). If they don't work, try & lt ; and & gt ; without the spaces, that results in <>.
