Wow, where did those 60 hours go?!

Recommended Posts

Well it's a good thing I get lengthy holidays over christmas because WOW, this game just sucked up 60 odd hours worth of my life.

I've always loved Spiderweb games, my favourite was always Geneforge 5 UNTIL today. Thanks Jeff for making a phenomenal story.

I was ever so tempted to start again with a duo or solo, but I think I'd better have a break.

After completing all 3 main quests and basically every other quest execpt the ale/wine/fang ones plus going back for every level 3 barrier I feel like I know Avernum a little too well. I can only wonder how Jeff's dreams aren't filled with Avernum tilesets every single bloody night :)

Next to play is Avadon 2 and Avernum 6... any suggestions on which first?

I never completed Avadon, I got tired trying to kill Redbeard. 30-40 minutes in and I'd had enough, still have the save from before the fight but I honestly just don't want to do that fight again so I'll just have to imagine I won :p

I loved the way Jeff wrote the story for Avadon though, you honestly felt like an above the law bad arse - even if you were always working for good.

On the other hand... I'm well and truly addicted to the Avernum story line now. I've only ever played A:EftP in this set and while I don't think I'll play the first 5, but I want to see how he's ended the whole series. Bugger, well I think I sold myself, off to go buy A6.

<Pointless delerious ramble after mammoth gaming session over>

Hmm, I hope he remakes some of the older Geneforge games with this new engine so I can give them a shot (only played Geneforge 5 so far).

Not Avernum 4/6.

All old Avernums are damn unplayable after starting from A:EFTP.

Weird system of character creation (games is giving 0 info about it you, no idea if it's better to raise main stats or weapon specialisation etc.), stupid system of teachers, no bag to hold all loot so a lot of time wasted by going from dungeon to city endlessly to sell some stuff. Also, in Avernum 4 and 6 map is horrible, completely unrealistic with 2 cities for example being so close to each other, that they're almost the one. World map from A:EFTP is really gorgeous. I spend 100h trying to complete Avernum 4, but I gave up after doing half of it, It's really weird and in comparision to A:EFTP lame.

Damn, now I want once again to play A:EFTP. Almost perfect game. :C

Of the six games in the Avernum series, A2 is really the only other game that shares the full, rich flavour and atmosphere of A1 -- the only other game where the land of the caves and its people really feel so alive. Although A4 and A6 are set in the same location as well, there just isn't the same loving attention to detail. As Maiar mentioned, the map has been demented; it's clearly a game in the same series, but not in the same spirit.

A6 is still a very good game, but given your description of what you loved about AEFTP -- which I agree with 100% -- be forewarned that A6 may not be what you are expecting.

A2: Crystal Souls is slated to be the next game Spiderweb releases, I believe. So if I were you, I'd just wait for that one to come out. A2 has arguably the best treatment of the setting and spirit of the world of Avernum, and if AEFTP is any sign, it will be a much better-balanced and user-friendly game than A2 was.

Ack, I agree with you both already, and I'm only a couple hours into A6. Bummer!

I'm not finding myself drawn into the world like I was with A:EftP. That world lived and breathed and was so detailed with, as you both say, a gorgeously detailed map. A6... not so much. I don't mind so much the older engine style, it's just the story isn't drawing me in. I think I'll very much want to see the war with the Empire play out in A2 after completing A:EftP, so I think I'll give Avernum a break and wait.

Hey, it was only $5 on steam and if it helps Jeff complete A2 with the new engine (and maybe some Geneforges... ;)) then I'm ok with it.

Might go start on Avadon 2 instead, I've still got a week and half of holiday to go! :)

Oh yeah, A:EftP was a definite improvement, although you could see the glimmer of bling in the older versions. They just wore it on their toes or something, and Avernum is cold, you need to cover up warm. Trouble was, there's always bling in first drafts. I'd love to pinpoint what the problems were in earlier games and detail the specific improvements. From where I stand here on this really strange, high, tall horse... wait a minute, how did I get up here. Lemme get my soap box. *Jumps on soapbox* From what I see there's an ease of use for A:EftP, although I do miss exploring to find walls that parted like blue jelly and let me discover secrets on the other side. I also found the character creation to be better than its sisters, like Maiar said. And even though A: EftP is still wordy, its not as much a Shakespearian dissertation as an over-talkative checkout chick. Thoughts?

Yeah, the character creation/leveling up process is certainly different. It's sort of ironic, being an older gamer (I guess if you count 34 old) who started back with the XT and 386, I always thought of myself as a more hardcore type gamer in that I don't mind complexity.

I think what's actually happened is that, my nostalgic brain desires complexity and spreadsheets and hand drawn maps and all that jazz. But my, somewhere-along-the-line developed lazy brain says; "bugger that". *shrug*

Eh, Ceowulf, careful using the B word. I got edited for a less offensive word. I understand what you mean, though. Drawing a grid and naming squares was what got me in to gaming. When windows rolled out, I used to make adventure games with word and hyperlinks. Strange days. Can't say whether I prefer the more modern gaming or the old. The modern does strip out some of the fun of figuring it out on your own, but you can get down to tin tacks on the meat of the game.

  • 4 weeks later...

im playing avernum 6 and I love it. I dont know, it has it's charm. It's definitely hard to go from the newer engine to the older one but after playing so many poorly written games. It's still playable.

I like it alot actually. Somehow my characters have developed unique character in combat, to me anyway. My priest is always wanting to bust up a demon with his sword. My archer is kind of a coward. My fighter has died so many times that he has ptsd. My mage is aloof and doesnt know whats going on.

I've found it impossible to tear myself away from my party. I do look forward to AEftP and reading that a sequel is coming..... giddy.
