Easygoing Eyebeast VCH
Who else thinks tool use should be totalled amongst all the party members? Nature lore and arcane lore are. Having four people with 1 point nature lore doesn't make them equal to one person with four points in my mind. If you have four people that can say the alphabet it doesn't mean together they can write a novel. So why not make tool use like the nature lore and arcane lore, unrealistic as they are? Ineffable Wingbolt Dahak
Because tool use often leads to better treasures. If it was distributive Jeff would ramp the difficulty of the lock to match. However this impairs a singleton. Use nimble fingers if you must for it does add to Tool Use. Rotghroth Rhapsody Soul of Wit
My usual solution is to give tool use to the party member with the heaviest experience penalty. That same party member then gets ALL knowledge brews/wisdom crystals as a balancing measure.

It's worked okay: my Slith polearm fighter is getting all the tool use and all the skill point boosts, and he's about on par with my Nephil dual wielder. You really only need 12 Tool Use plus items to get everything worth getting. 15 plus items gets you a few more things, but nothing you can't afford to miss. Hatchling Cockatrice Mea Tulpa
It's only 42 skill points to get to 12. Really this is a small package. I find the mages and priests require more skill points to really reach maximum usability, so it's best to give the tool use to a fighter. Hatchling Cockatrice Alorael at Large
When the thief had to be a mage that character definitely got all the sources of skill points. Now I tend to split them among my casters and my lockpicker. It has worked fairly well. —Alorael, who imagines that the Tool Use total isn't summed because only one person at a time can be wiggling things inside a lock or poking at a trap. For lore you can all stand around and consult.
Easygoing Eyebeast VCH
I've decided I'm just going to edit in tool use for all Jeff's games from A6 on.
Magnificent Ornk Ephesos
Yeah. Never really worried about Tool Use much. Definitely pumped every source of skill points into my ambidextrous fighter to make him a better tank.
