Wands go in the weapon slot. If you already have a weapon like a sword or a spear equipped, you'll have to remove it before equipping the wand. If that doesn't work, make sure you aren't trying to equip a beneficial baton. Those are used in the inventory rather than being equipped.

 

That said, anyone can wield a wand.

 

AMEND: What Iffy said applies if you're playing any other Avernum game currently released.

Umm, this is in the Avernum 4 board.
I think you made a mistake (It happens to everyone at some point).

Edit -What you are saying goes for Geneforge 4.

Exactly. The entire Geneforge series treats wands as a primary weapon. When Avernum 4 was blended with the Geneforge engine, this facet remained in effect for all combat wands. Wands take up the primary weapon slot in A4.
