I played Avernum 1-3, but now i remember that i had the same problem in Geneforge (which i did not like as much as Avernum...). There is no light-spell and a lantern i found does not work either! Jeff made a bad choice for backround colors for some lower levels and the contrast makes A4 dungeons very hard to see. Even with your monitor turned all the way up you might miss things.
