  1. I'm not sure on all the other stuff, but I do know AP penalty.

AP penalty means when you are carrying more than your weight, you are losing Action Points, meaning you move slower, and might now be able to make a move depending on how big the penalty.

Huh... I've hit the max weight that I'm capable of carrying but I don't think I've seen any AP Penalties come up yet...

  2. So I noticed something that I'm pretty sure was not shown in A1/A2, the encumbrance stat(or whatever you want to call it).

I'm not sure about this (so clarify it if you are :D) but I'm guessing 1 Encumbrance = 5% attack penalty.

I read somewhere that hardiness reduces this penalty, which I had no idea of...

Can someone clarify this, and explain what the spellcasting penalty is? (not that it specifically matters, all my casters always have Natural Mage)

    Also, what's AP penalty?

  3. Congratz on finishing your playthrough. I just finished A1 now, and am moving to A2. Hope to have as much fun as I did with A1 :) . Btw, could you explain any differences you saw in A1 and A2? Without spoilers of course.

    I can't guarantee total accuracy, since it's been a while since I played A1.

Throwing weapons are almost totally unviable in A1 because of the ridiculous weight and how fast you go through them, but in A2 the razordisks are light and still functional so it becomes viable.

Mages in A2 are absurdly tanky, your characters will need to be fairly well-rounded and tough, defense-wise, to weather their attacks and still survive while whittling their health down.

I got the impression A2 had a lot of quests that you couldn't deal with until way later, which bothers me somewhat.

I don't recall how easy the tier 3 spells were to get in A1, but in A2 for the most part you won't be getting good tier 3 spells for a goood long while : / I didn't get haste tier 3 until 90% of the way through the game... which is unfortunate, because 50% of the hostile spells enemies cast are slow...

Maybe you could just stock so much food that it becomes a non-issue, but areas with lots of waterfalls (the major waterfall area west of Fort Dranlon / beneath Formello) drain food so constantly that I'd recommend not even bringing any with you unless you're going to bring a ton.

On that note, unless I'm quite mistaken you can never return to the area from Formello to Avit after the first time, so be thorough while you're down there.

Oh, remembered an important note: There are dungeons which force you to only bring one character, so if you're like me and almost never use potions, since magic can generate the same effects- you may want to have some useful potions on hand for those situations. Energy potions are an absolute requirement, moreso than any other potion type, regardless of situation.

Mid-level mages/priests like to spam high-damage fire spells, so anti-fire gear is very useful for pretty much the entire game.

I might report back if more comes to me. Good luck!

  4. Accuracy isn't a stat per se. Accuracy is influenced by a bunch of stats. Many of those stats also influence damage. Even after you increase those stats to the point that you hit the accuracy cap, they keep increasing damage.

So yes, sort of, but it's not that increasing accuracy increases damage; it's that the same stats increase both.

At least, that's how I understand it from the skill descriptions, which I haven't verified with real data.

Right, I meant the stat that influences accuracy. It's helpful to know that the skills/stats actually do influence damage too. Hard to tell.

  5. They are pretty well explained on the strategy central threads and in the walkthroughs.

Are you sure that your spamming of the boards is necessary? There is a search feature you know.

Not sure that needed to be so confrontational, I've been googling the terms a lot with no success at all.

In the future, actually give me a link then explain how to go about finding it.

  6. Pretty sure that's not the case, but I can't back that up atm. Of course, some stats that increase accuracy will also increase damage. And some games have damage caps. Which game were you asking about specifically? A2?

More the first Avernum trilogy than anything else, but I actually want to know this for any game in which it'd come into question.

If I think a stat maxes at 95% accuracy, I'd use skill points elsewhere. If I think I get bonus damage I'd spend them there.

  7. I've been playing a little of the Nethergate: Resurrection demo and I get the impression (from the background noises and general design) that it's slightly newer than Avernum 1 & 2 (haven't played 3 yet).

Can anyone give me a date for each game released by Spiderweb Software? (a year would be fine)

  8. Alright! I beat Avernum 2 on the second hardest difficulty. Took care of all 3 of the major quests, retrieving the Crystal Souls, closing the Portal and defeating Garzahd.

I got all the tier 3 spells except Control Foes (though I had been planning on returning to the Empire Archives, now that I have Unlock Door 3), but I had to look up how to find almost half of them (I think...)

I'm probably going to move on to Avernum 3 now, maybe Avadon 2.

What kind of challenges do people like to take on in A2? I've heard the term singletons thrown around here and there, which I assume means playing the game with a solo character.

  9. So I went to Angierach, went through the arena, got sent to the jail cell- broke out using Unlock Door 3, killed all 12 of the 'Masters of Angierach' (to be more accurate I used unlock door 3, a phoenix egg, grabbed the Crystal Soul, killed 11 of the 12, returned the Crystal Soul, got tier 3 of the Capture Soul spell, came back and captured the Lich's soul before killing her)...

... and Quinby is still in his jail cell.

Quinby is a spirit of a mage who was killed by the 12, and he wants them dead.

I think there is an option to have Quinby use the remainder of his powers to open the door (but I had Unlock Door 3)...

Does this mean if I don't use him to escape he just sits there forever?
