  1. I finished the game. Certainly this is the longest Avernum game I can recall. Great value for sure.

Still I have one issue: I play on normal. I don't even try a harder setting. But...I don't understand how I can play through an entire game on normal relatively easily and get so massacred in two battles at the end that I have to go to casual. The arena killed me as did Garzhad. Other than that I had a lot of fun.

Would love to know what I have been doing wrong in this game. I used the 4 characters that were already built.

Anyway, that you all who helped me when I was lost.

See you at Avernum 3 redo.

    Snot

I feel you. I'm playing Torment more out of spite than enjoyment at this point. It might be time to just lower the difficulty.

Jeff really dropped the ball on lowering the hit rate, imo. There is a reason games like World of Warcraft have totally abandoned hit rating for a flat level rate--- it sucks when you have an 87% chance of hitting something but miss three times in a row.

I'm still playing though, so clearly Jeff got more than a few things right!

  2. The dialogue for the wandering Empire spies in the western Great Cave is blank (you only see "OK." in the dialogue popup window) - at least if you encounter them before encountering the Avernite patrol that mentions them elsewhere in the Great Cave (which is what happened in my playthrough).

Interestingly enough, I encountered the same thing when getting into a fight with some Sliths next to Dranlon:

  3. Alternatively engaging into a battle with a group of wandering monsters (outdoors encounter) will force all of the other wandering monster groups to disappear (reset). At least that's what I've come to notice. And it's a refreshing change from the original Avernum 2: when you'd see multiple groups of hostile creatures (i.e: Dark Wyrms etc) between you and your boat, you just knew you were absolutely done for... :p

Just an FYI, I think this only works if you are near said wandering monsters. It's so you dont come out of battle weakened w/ no mana and have another battle right away. Haven't tested how far it works, but I guess I coulda just waited by the Nephil shrine till I found a random battle and sailed back.

  4. Move your boat around to the other bit of coast just to the west and dock there instead?

Alternatively, if you leave the area and go far enough away, they might eventually despawn.

I've been moving my boat around for a while, and the other coast also has some goblins blocking it, but I went all the way to the spiders, chatted for a bit, came back and....

I'll have to wait to despawn them--- unfortunately the barriers are still up (fresh game) but I do appreciate the advice!

  5. I don't think that's true. The penalty for getting cave lore is a few hundred gold. And tool use is totally worth it on Torment. I typically finish Jeff's games with a party that can access all caches, open all doors, read all spellbooks, etc.

Now, it does mean that you need to build your characters optimally in terms of role and point distribution. Daze mostly doesn't work at higher levels anyway, but in any case using the available spells in strategic ways isn't really "cheesing". Cheesing would be going back to town after every fight, or ducking in an out of a level to kill one enemy at a time, whittling away a group, etc.

This is torment in a nutshell

  6. There's some nice treasure in that section, but nothing important that you can't get elsewhere -- no spells or anything like that. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I left those poor Vahnatai to die, tho.

Beyond that and optimizing my party though, the dialogue is getting too me. Too many characters just absolutely [censored] on the lizards and cats and the only change in dialogue is the guy saying "uhhh no offense" to the ones you have in your party.

It just seems like it was written to have a group of humans in it.

  7. I think the races are balanced okay. Thing is you don't need every single trait. A lot of them offer very little to a specified character build. Having +1 endurance or dex add nothing to the entirety of a character. Humans you can see Jeff made for more hybrid character like a paladin a warrior that wants to cast priest spells and be able to tank effeciently or sword mage while the other races are suited for a more specialized role.

By level 30, my Human will have 3 more Strength and 3 more Endurance.then my Slith

  8. Yes, I found quite a bit of a problem with the animal racials. Unless you use spears with the Lizards or missile weapons with the Cats you are completely missing out on their racial. And that's disregarding that the bonus human traits will eclipse whatever bonuses the animals get on top of being completely up to the player what bonuses they wish to take to help build their characters. Humans are just so much more flexible that it's kinda pointless to take the other races other than for the flavor.

I almost restarted my team and made an all-human team. Very bizarre.

  9. Sorry to ressurect an old thread-- but could someone explain to me (or PM me) the alteration to the script that would make this available without the trigger? I got the 45 prestige, so that ain't the issue, and I don't know what the "gf(66,18) == 0;" requirement is in the script (and learning exactly how it all works would kind of be a bummer just for one quick change).

At this point, I've completely nearly everything else there is to do...

Edit: Forget it. Apparently that event is linked to talking to Aydin, which I had put off until I could talk to the statues. Talked to Ayden and got him to teach me the rituals and then I got the statue dialogue from Erika. Awkwarddddd.

  10. This is the second damn bug I've encountered and had to restart. That's a few too many hours wasted to continue this game... Never had any issue with Jeff's games before, pretty disappointing.

edit: on the other hand, used a purge crystal on the barrier in the Spiral Pit and there's still treasure in it. So I don't know. My junk bag has filled up with twenty thousand "unused" sword icons twice, so I may still put down the game.
