    2. A verse in the elf song goes like this:
    "O! What are you seeking,
    And where are you making?
    The faggots are reeking,
    The bannocks are baking!
    O! tril-lil-lil-lolly
    the valley is jolly,
    ha! ha!
    "
If you're thinking that "here's another homophob" then stop being so homosensitive I don't care about the insulting meaning because this is Tolkien we're talking about, just calm down and read on.
From what I loosely researched faggots are sticks and a bannock is a type of Scottish bread, why would sticks have a bad smell?
"Reek" can mean to put off any sort of fume, vapor, or smoke. Considering that another meaning of that fun little word* is "a burning or smouldering piece of firewood", this actually makes sense.

*I'm aware of the various (and I do mean various, from what I understand, it can mean anything from baggage to cigarette butts to meatballs, along with the usual and above meanings) meanings and wouldn't be using it in any insulting context whatsoever, but I consider it best to err on the side of caution.
  2. Reminder! For those of us near the Atlantic ocean (Yay!), the session is Today! For those of us near the Pacific ocean (Boo!), it's tomorrow!

Either way, 18 hours and 42 minutes till session 2 of FoD! Be there (or else Voria will blow up another shield generator)!

I'm pretty sure advertising other games is what you're thinking of. Discussing other games, as far as I'm aware, is perfectly fine.
  4. One thing I'm kinda not liking about Battle for Wesnoth is just how much of a role luck has in its gameplay. I recently just quit a solo game in disgust after a single gryphon rider ripped through my entire starting line-up and took minimal damage in return; I mean, it feels like winning has more to do with getting lucky than utilizing actual tactics (I know this isn't completely true, but it still definitely feels that way at times).

  5. I took the test. I think most of it's spot-on, but there's a few areas that made me raise an eyebrow.

EXTRAVERSION...............6 - "Your score on Extraversion is low, indicating you are introverted, reserved, and quiet. You enjoy solitude and solitary activities. Your socializing tends to be restricted to a few close friends."

    Click to reveal..
Friendliness.............3 - "Low scorers on Friendliness are not necessarily cold and hostile, but they do not reach out to others and are perceived as distant and reserved."

Gregariousness...........4 - "Low scorers tend to feel overwhelmed by, and therefore actively avoid, large crowds. They do not necessarily dislike being with people sometimes, but their need for privacy and time to themselves is much greater than for individuals who score high on this scale."

Assertiveness............54 - "High scorers Assertiveness like to speak out, take charge, and direct the activities of others. They tend to be leaders in groups. Low scorers tend not to talk much and let others control the activities of groups. Your level of assertiveness is average."

Activity Level...........0 - "People who score low on this scale follow a slower and more leisurely, relaxed pace."

Excitement-Seeking.......26 - "Low scorers are overwhelmed by noise and commotion and are adverse to thrill-seeking."

Cheerfulness.............46 - "This scale measures positive mood and feelings, not negative emotions (which are a part of the Neuroticism domain). Persons who score high on this scale typically experience a range of positive feelings, including happiness, enthusiasm, optimism, and joy. Low scorers are not as prone to such energetic, high spirits. Your level of positive emotions is average."

(These results do not surprise me in the slightest, and feel pretty accurate to me.)

AGREEABLENESS..............28 - "Your score on Agreeableness is low, indicating less concern with others' needs Than with your own. People see you as tough, critical, and uncompromising."

    Click to reveal..
Trust....................51 - "A person with high trust assumes that most people are fair, honest, and have good intentions. Persons low in trust see others as selfish, devious, and potentially dangerous. Your level of trust is average."

Morality.................19 - "Low scorers believe that a certain amount of deception in social relationships is necessary. [...] [People] generally find it more difficult to relate to the unstraightforward low-scorers on this scale. It should be made clear that low scorers are not unprincipled or immoral; they are simply more guarded and less willing to openly reveal the whole truth."

Altruism.................5 - "Low scorers on this scale do not particularly like helping those in need. Requests for help feel like an imposition rather than an opportunity for self-fulfillment."

Cooperation..............26 - "Individuals who score high on this scale dislike confrontations. They are perfectly willing to compromise or to deny their own needs in order to get along with others. Those who score low on this scale are more likely to intimidate others to get their way."

Modesty..................74 - "High scorers on this scale do not like to claim that they are better than other people. In some cases this attitude may derive from low self-confidence or self-esteem. Nonetheless, some people with high self-esteem find immodesty unseemly."

Sympathy.................41 - "People who score high on this scale are tenderhearted and compassionate. They feel the pain of others vicariously and are easily moved to pity. Low scorers are not affected strongly by human suffering. They pride themselves on making objective judgments based on reason. They are more concerned with truth and impartial justice than with mercy. Your level of tender-mindedness is average."

(Again, not a lot of surprises. I think Altruism's been tainted by recent events, though; I generally give help when asked and generally don't mind it, but I've been getting volunteered quite a bit without my consent, which tends to grate on my nerves and, as the scale description says, feels like an imposition.)

CONSCIENTIOUSNESS..........6 - "Your score on Conscientiousness is low, indicating you like to live for the moment and do what feels good now. Your work tends to be careless and disorganized."

    Click to reveal..
Self-Efficacy............24 - "Low scorers do not feel effective, and may have a sense that they are not in control of their lives."

Orderliness..............3 - "Low scorers tend to be disorganized and scattered."

Dutifulness..............54 - "This scale reflects the strength of a person's sense of duty and obligation. Those who score high on this scale have a strong sense of moral obligation. Low scorers find contracts, rules, and regulations overly confining. They are likely to be seen as unreliable or even irresponsible. Your level of dutifulness is average."

Achievement-Striving.....1 - "Low scorers are content to get by with a minimal amount of work, and might be seen by others as lazy."

Self-Discipline..........9 - "Those with low self-discipline procrastinate and show poor follow-through, often failing to complete tasks-even tasks they want very much to complete."

Cautiousness.............38 - "Cautiousness describes the disposition to think through possibilities before acting. High scorers on the Cautiousness scale take their time when making decisions. Low scorers often say or do first thing that comes to mind without deliberating alternatives and the probable consequences of those alternatives. Your level of cautiousness is average."

(I am content to get by with a 1 in Achievement. tongue )

NEUROTICISM................69 - "Your score on Neuroticism is high, indicating that you are easily upset, even by what most people consider the normal demands of living. People consider you to be sensitive and emotional." (See inside)

    Click to reveal..
Anxiety..................93 - "The "fight-or-flight" system of the brain of anxious individuals is too easily and too often engaged. Therefore, people who are high in anxiety often feel like something dangerous is about to happen. They may be afraid of specific situations or be just generally fearful. They feel tense, jittery, and nervous."

Anger....................88 - "Persons who score high in Anger feel enraged when things do not go their way. They are sensitive about being treated fairly and feel resentful and bitter when they feel they are being cheated. This scale measures the tendency to feel angry; whether or not the person expresses annoyance and hostility depends on the individual's level on Agreeableness."

Depression...............30 - "This scale measures the tendency to feel sad, dejected, and discouraged. [...] Low scorers tend to be free from these depressive feelings."

Self-Consciousness.......58 - "Self-conscious individuals are sensitive about what others think of them. Their concern about rejection and ridicule cause them to feel shy and uncomfortable abound others. They are easily embarrassed and often feel ashamed. Their fears that others will criticize or make fun of them are exaggerated and unrealistic, but their awkwardness and discomfort may make these fears a self-fulfilling prophecy. Low scorers, in contrast, do not suffer from the mistaken impression that everyone is watching and judging them. They do not feel nervous in social situations. Your level or self-consciousness is average."

Immoderation.............48 - "Immoderate individuals feel strong cravings and urges that they have have difficulty resisting. They tend to be oriented toward short-term pleasures and rewards rather than long- term consequences. Low scorers do not experience strong, irresistible cravings and consequently do not find themselves tempted to overindulge. Your level of immoderation is average."

Vulnerability............48 - "High scorers on Vulnerability experience panic, confusion, and helplessness when under pressure or stress. Low scorers feel more poised, confident, and clear-thinking when stressed. Your level of vulnerability is average."

(I feel this is mostly accurate, with one MASSIVE exception: Anxiety. I am NOT an anxious person. I think every person I know in real life, and even any person on these forums who know me, can attest that I'm not constantly tense or jittery. I do get nervous occasionally, but it's not like I'm on constant pins and needles, which this test is suggesting. Unfortunately, I think the over-the-top Anxiety score is skewing the whole Neuroticism scale high.)

OPENNESS TO EXPERIENCE.....21 - "Your score on Openness to Experience is low, indicating you like to think in plain and simple terms. Others describe you as down-to-earth, practical, and conservative." (Which is odd when you look at my liberalism score)

    Click to reveal..
Imagination..............89 - "To imaginative individuals, the real world is often too plain and ordinary. High scorers on this scale use fantasy as a way of creating a richer, more interesting world."

Artistic Interests.......40 - "High scorers on this scale love beauty, both in art and in nature. They become easily involved and absorbed in artistic and natural events. They are not necessarily artistically trained nor talented, although many will be. The defining features of this scale are interest in, and appreciation of natural and artificial beauty. Low scorers lack aesthetic sensitivity and interest in the arts. Your level of artistic interests is average.

Emotionality.............1 - "Low scorers are less aware of their feelings and tend not to express their emotions openly."

Adventurousness..........19 - "Low scorers tend to feel uncomfortable with change and prefer familiar routines."

Intellect................1 - "Low scorers on Intellect prefer dealing with either people or things rather than ideas. They regard intellectual exercises as a waste of time. Intellect should not be equated with intelligence. Intellect is an intellectual style, not an intellectual ability, although high scorers on Intellect score slightly higher than low-Intellect individuals on standardized intelligence tests."

Liberalism...............79 - "Psychological liberalism refers to a readiness to challenge authority, convention, and traditional values. In its most extreme form, psychological liberalism can even represent outright hostility toward rules, sympathy for law-breakers, and love of ambiguity, chaos, and disorder."

(Intellect's score surprised me; it wasn't until I thought about how I think of religion, the metaphysical and unknowable, and so forth that I realized the score actually makes sense. Other than that, I'm mostly just amused at how my openness score is low and suggesting of conservatism, yet I've got 79 on Liberalism)

I was pretty much at the minimal number of reps to achieve anything; there's not a whole lot I can do to dial it back further.
  7. I'm out.

I still can't keep good form and seem to actually be getting weaker (I did W1 D1 yesterday, and couldn't get past the second set). Throw in real life continuing to run interference, and.. yeah. It's just not working. frown

  8. Interested. Finally got it downloaded, beat the tutorial fairly quickly, and got through the first level of the Heir to the Throne campaign on Normal without too much difficulty. Here's hoping it's light enough on the internet connection that it's doable on Dial-up, and that my natural talent for Wargames in general is enough to put up a good fight.

  9. I'm going to have to start Week 1 over come Monday. Real life threw everything including the kitchen sink (and a 13-hour black-out) at me, and I had neither the time or the energy most days to do it. And when I attempted Day 2 today, I was having an ungodly time maintaining good form, to the point that I was having to repeat and start sets over and wound up unable to complete the final set. frown

  10. Yeah, I want to, but no push-ups today. The way the program's set up, there's supposed to be a day of rest between each set of sets. Unfortunately, yesterday was about as far from restful as one can get, and involved a lot of heavy pulling and lifting. My muscles are currently so sore and fatigued that even mundane tasks I normally perform without a thought are giving me a bit of trouble today, and there's not a snowball's chance in hell that I'd be able to complete today's sets.

So... yeah, pushing it back to tomorrow, when I'll hopefully be feeling quite a bit better.

I was thinking a check-in every M/W/F, but maybe we should do it just once a week so we don't spam up the boards.
Eh, I don't think it'd be a terrible crime to do a M/W/F check-in. Think of it as healthy spam, if you want to ease your conscience. tongue

Speaking of which, just completed the Week 1 Day 1 sets, sort of. I was only working at about 84% of good form; my abdominals keep wanting to push my body away from the ground, and I'm not used to balancing on my toes like that, meaning my back end has a tendency to buckle and send my front end toppling to the ground. Hopefully that's something that'll improve as time goes on. But I managed to eke out the 3 min push-ups in set 5.
  12. I think I need to improve her ability to handle firearms a bit.

    I can top (bottom?) that: 0 Good-Form push-ups.

Mind, while some of it is definitely a lack of upper-body strength (and a non-lack of upper-body weight), the other half is that I have ridiculous difficulty actually maintaining good form; my abdominal muscles always want to take over, which means I get going only to realize its my abs doing half the work. Even when I was in shape, I was never really able to do push-ups properly.

And I think for the most part he did that, barring one or two filler sessions where we basically just did some travelling and fighting.
Hmm... I mean, it's kind of interesting you bring up the Same Page Tool. Save for one exception, the SPT answers for Abyss and AtCT were identical, and that includes "The GM has no plan – the GM simply plays the NPCs and has them act or react based on their motivations". Yet, arguably, both campaigns played out very differently. AtCT definitely had some direction and a goal set out for the party, while Abyss did not. Personally, this suggests that the SPT isn't actually getting people on the same page, and needs to be revamped and have its options more clearly delineated.

    eek

I mean, I guess it's good to nudge quieter players into action, but on the other hand, I'm getting this knee-jerk "DO NOT WANT" reaction to having a rule in place to enforce that. But I suppose it's too early to make any real judgements on it.

There was nothing to actually push us into making real decisions or doing, well, anything other than wander, and while we were given choices, there was little to actually differentiate between those choices. It basically boiled down to the rest of the party tagging along with a single PC's whims for a seeming lack of anything better to do (in the beginning half, Urgdnebbot. In the latter half, Yemirrr), and there was never any real motivation to break out of that mold.

To use a metaphor, imagine helming a sailing ship during an overcast night on an uncharted sea. You can change direction, but you can't see far enough to tell whether or why you should alter course, or whether you're actually getting any closer to any sort of goal. And thus, you just sort of drift along with the tide.

I'm a little surprised to hear you say this, since, as you pointed out, you were the one directing things for much of the campaign -- at least in the sense that your leadership of the bandits gave you a pretty good amount of veto power over any of our plans. And you didn't seem to have a shortage of goals to pursue, either in the short or the long term. So I'm not sure I fully understand why you in particular are complaining here.
My point isn't that our characters didn't have goals. Each and every member of the party clearly had its own goals and ambitions. It's that our PARTY didn't really have any sort of goal that's bugging me: It was never really clear what we were actually supposed to be doing, other than an extremely vague "Survive", and that resulted in about half the campaign feeling like it was spinning its wheels; it felt less like the party was following Urgdnebbot/Yemirrr because they agreed with them, and more because there just didn't seem to be any better options.

(Speaking of which, with the leadership position, I was desperately trying to strike a balance between Yemirrr's character and ambitions, the position's IC responsibilities, and not running roughshod over the party. Judging from the tone of your post, I'm guessing I failed in that regard. frown )
  16. Okay, after campaign thoughts. I don't have a lot of them; the campaign was fun, and I had a blast. NPCs, Atmosphere... it was pretty much getting high marks in everything, and it really felt like Avernum. There's probably a lot more I ought to say here, but to be honest, praise is not really my strong point.

However, there was one major thing that stood out. I didn't really notice it at the beginning, but as time went on, it became more and more apparent. And I think this quote from the Aftermath PM pretty much sums it up:

    Quote:
Honestly, I'm having a hard time figuring out what I'm going to [...] do next.
Yes, that quote is out-of-context, but I think it's applicable to pretty much the entire campaign: There was nothing actually driving it along, and nothing to actually help us make our own choices. I mean, no offense to Rowen, but in mechanical terms, if we had dropped Pepper for any other sort of mage or fighter, we probably would have been much better off. Despite having one of the highest magic bonuses in the party, it seemed that Pepper was still struggling to pull her own weight in a fight, and was frequently resorting to using stamina to make a difference. And this was considering she had the advantage of being able to select spells that were always applicable, thanks to the setting. Can you imagine Pepper trying to survive on the surface, or on Mote?

This might be because people who live with those disasters or threats regularly are more prepared to handle them. If you're regularly dealing with a type of threat, you're more likely to know the protocols and rules for staying safe, but if an out-of-context threat shows up, it can wind up catching people completely off-guard.

Of course, this is mostly speaking from personal experience, so... *shrug*

Yeah, I definitely agree with this. After 10 years in Florida, and seeing a fair number of hurricanes come through without ever killing me, one starts to become a little blase, or even jaded. It's almost entertaining to hear the government commercials on the radio announcing the start of hurricane season and being all serious and impending doom-y. Yes yes, I know I know, blah blah blah, lighten up dude.
Personally, I find it amusing to watch people in/from a warm-weather state completely lose their marbles when they wind up having to deal with snow and ice, something which would hardly phase any Michigander (or any other person from a cold state or nation). And that's not even a disaster!
