  1. That's true about Avernum. Avernum was at best fighting to a stalemate in some places, but lost a lot of ground. It was only due to the Empire's slow trickle of soldiers that Avernum didn't get completely overun. Mahdavi and a few others even say that if the Empire had a way to transport more soldiers down Avernum would fall. It was only due to the efforts of the Vahnatai and the Empire War Heroes that The Empire withdrew. In a sense it was a victory for Avernum. But only because The Empire gave up. They had the resources and the manpower to keep going.

During the Plague Wars, the Vahnatai attacked a newly settled backwater. If they had attacked the heart of the Empire, it wouldn't have caused even 20% of the devastation. Maybe some of the golems and half of the Alien Beasts, but they would've been under control.

  2. This is my first post of 2013. Like a few others, this makes my 13th year posting on these boards. I'm not on here hardly anymore for the main reason the only way I can even get on here is to go to the library. I'm too busy taking care of things to be able to do so. Today, I got some free time. It's good to see how things are.

  3. I've been playing Spiderweb Software games since 1998 when I first played Exile: Escape from the Pit and Exile 2: Crystal Souls. I've played and bought nearly every game since (except Nethergate: Resurrection and Geneforges 2-5). My favorite older game is Exile 2: Crystal Souls, and my favorite newer game is Avernum: Escape from the Pit.

As for A:EftP, I love the additions to it. It makes for a nice change and somewhat deeper storyline than one some of us have literally known for years.

  4. I've just finished week 6. That's it for me. I'm just gonna stop right there. Sure I could do more, but I'm fairly proud of myself for the progress I've made so far. I will still keep doing push-ups and other things to keep my body in shape, but as far as pushing myself to go farther...I'm done with that for right now.

Good luck to everyone elseand hope that ya'll can acheive the elusive 100 push-ups!

Because almost 2 years ago I was wanting to make a list of my posts from this site. I found all I could find but was left without my first 100 or so posts (too old I guess) and a few others. I only numbered them when the number ended with either 50 or 00. On my list I was wanting to put numbers with the posts, and have succeeded with most of them. To avoid such things in the future, in case I loose the list on my computer, I number all my posts now.

  6. I asked for one years ago. That was before I was told of the 'rule' that if you asked for a custom title that meant you wouldn't get one. So now I guess I'm doomed forever! No bother though, I'm not here often enough to care what my title is. I just keep up with my post count, see how things are going around here and that's about it!

Normal people become killers all the time. We just pretend they aren't normal after the fact because it gives us an excuse to treat criminals and people with mental disorders as less than human as well as having to avoid worrying about whether our society enables or encourages violence or if we might become killers too in the wrong circumstances.

    Dikiyoba.

I agree. A person could be 'normal' but then something would happen to them and they would snap. As long as someone is comfortable where they are they are fine. Take away that comfort, and things can change. Does that mean that they will go on shooting sprees killing and injuring many people...not always.
It could happen literally to ANYONE! You take away a person's house, car, phone, and food away and they start getting desperate. They could do any variety of things. The main consideration of what they do depends on the morals of that person.

Thats part of the trick. You can only kill Solberg with magic!

Do I go around giving away your trade secrets? NO! So I would appreciate it if you would stop telling people how to kill me.

To be fair, in A:EftP, you can spread tool use around. I'll admit I didn't the first time, but it is possible, since the game checks the party's total.

I know it checks party total now, but I've played using this combination since Avernum 1.

    My four person group.
    1. Warrior-Swordsman (Tank)
    2. Thief-Archer/lockpicker/trap disarmer
    3. Priest-Ingredient holder
    4. Mage-Item holder

    I like the pic.

  11. My perspective:

I must say I really love this remake.

My pattern with with previous AV games was always this: "start out, get a few levels, realize that the builds I'm using are crappy, start over, get a few levels again, still die a lot (on normal), change my mind about builds again, start over again, eventually go online for help about where I should put my skill points, read about all the different opinions on every skill and trait, get totally overwhelmed with it all, give up/get distracted by another game."

I'd never finished an Avernum game, despite multiple attempts and really liking the idea of them...but I think I'm actually going to finish this one. I'm actually getting to go through and experience all the story!! And despite my party being sub-optimal I'm still able to use a combination of tactics, consumables, and determination to get though the game on Hard.

So...I know the old skill system was much loved, but at least for me ditching it and replacing it with something less complex and punishing has made the game much, much more enjoyable.

Really!?! I'm the exact opposite. I've finished every Spiderweb game I've played. In some cases (as with Exile 1 and 2) more than 10 times each! Of course we share the common bond of changing builds. My favorite build for 4 characters is a warrior tank, an archer thief, a priest and a mage.

*This combination works for me and may not have the same results for you.
