I bought the remake on Steam and started to play. I was enjoying it. Then I thought I may as well check out the originals as well. Loaded up the Avernum 1 and have not returned to the newer one. As someone pointed out earlier, the older game feels more immersive to me and more of an adventure. I like the tight corridors. It makes the fighting more tactical.

I don't think I saw it here. Heroes of Steel is not bad. Takes a little bit of time to get used to the UI but it is quite a fun game. I suggest playing it on hard. Normal is quite easy.
