  1. I don't think the goal was to simplify things or make them easier, but to make them less annoying. If you go back and play Avernum 4 (an older game, dating from before the system was changed) the encumbrance system is annoying. Removal of features that are easy but tedious is a good thing.

They're not the cheapest, especially the "unlimited" option which is what I have (yes, it's actually limited if you read the small print). The good thing is if you get the BT phoneline you can shop around for broadband from other ISPs anyway. Personally though I have used them forever for the simple reason I signed up in 1998 and don't want to change my email address. It's been reliable, I will say that.
  3. I was going to say that, but didn't want to spoil Avernum 6 for anyone who was still laboring under the misapprehension that it was not going to be the most depressing game they would ever play. Still.

Even the Vahnatai are embarassed about starting a colony in Avernum. There's also a character (not an Avernite) who will reward you for destroying the colony.

Edit: I can only conclude, our politicians are actually right when they say our internet speeds are causing us to fall behind internationally. Politicians being right: there's a first time for everything.

  5. I don't know why you would want to pick a low level creation like cyroa or unstable thahd when there are totally more awesome creations available, like wingbolt and rotghroth. But if you really want to take the same one through the *whole* game then the cryoa is the obvious choice, it's the most powerful creation available in chapter 1.

I know frown Fortunately Italy is just 2 hours flight away...

If you're in Oxford, have you tried the restaurant on the top floor of the Ashmolean? The tea there is quite good, but I haven't tried the coffee.

In earlier games, they used to boost both battle magic and blessing magic. Now it's just battle magic, but that's still miles better than vampiric touch.

Edit: Also, what's with the anti-Chuck Norris signature? Or is it pro. I can't tell.
  8. Did you actually change the DirectX settings? Changing the windows visual effects settings (under control panel/performance) to turn off windows animations etc will do nothing to help Geneforge. However, I found that changing the display adapter settings on the NVIDIA card does have a significant impact on DirectX games.

Also, if you haven't changed the settings in a long time, make sure you get the latest NVIDIA driver. The new ones do seem to have more settings that you can change on a per-application basis.

  9. It may not necessarily help in your case, but the following steps reduced the lag on my machine, in Geneforge and Geneforge 2.

    1. In Windows explorer, browse to the game executable (in the Program Files folder), right click and open the Properties sheet. Set the Compatability Mode settings to Windows 98/ME.

    2. In the NVIDIA control panel, under 3D settings, add specific program settings for Geneforge applications, setting all the configuration for DirectX to favor High Performance instead of Quality.

After these steps, the game is still not as fast as it I remember from when it was first released, but I found it sped up enough to become playable after this.

  10. Is there a healing ability though? The only creations I can remember who have any healing are shepherd vlish and those healing serviles (forget their name) and neither exists as a distinct creation type in the gf5itemschars, from which I make the dubious deductive leap that healing is only a scripted "attack", as it were.

@CrystalBolt: You can shape turrets, if you reorganize the creation numbers in gf5itemschars, and give up a creatable creation for turrents. E.g. swap turrets for a thahd (swap the lines "begindefinecreature 120" and "begindefinecreature 20", and where it occurs, replace "import = 120" with "import = 20"). I have tried this and - superficially - it works, your Create Thahd ability goes to create turrets instead. However I didn't play far after this hack, so there may probably be side effects of this down the line...
