Correction, Kelandon, Minion's statement is not in any way, shape or form accurate. I've been using Macs since the '80s and non-Apple input devices for just as long. Even I know that the default Apple mice of today allow for a right click on the right half of the single-button mouse. All Apple input devices allow for right clicks. I sometimes use a Mac laptop or Apple Magic Trackpad. I certainly right click on those. Apple's non-trackpad input devices are ridiculous, but there are other options. I have a 20-year-old Logitech Wheel Mouse that is still going strong, so additional cost is not a factor. A third-party mouse will work on a Mac without even making an adjustment to the OS settings.

Can you perform the equivalent of a right-click on the iPad? My experience of Mac computers is limited to growing up in a Mac household in the 90s, and I haven't touched one since, so my knowledge is severely limited and out of date.

  2. You are being very rude and obnoxious, and I do not believe that is good for you. It is obvious that Jeff Vogel is passionate about both his games and that the people who play them have fun.

Anyway, the only menu I can think of where you would need to scroll very far is the junk bag, and if you just make sure to keep stackable loot in your inventory (I recommend using your lead character for this) instead of placing, say, individual iron bars in the junk bank, it will be less cluttered. Also, the games are for both MacOS, Windows and iOS, two out three which do not support right-clicking.

  3. You can hold Tab to bring up the names of any nearby NPCs, but I do not believe that there has ever been a Spiderweb game where items on the ground are somehow interactive or can be highlighted. Perhaps you are thinking of some other RPG like Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition where you can click on items on the ground and highlight all interactive objects on the screen by pressing a button (usually Tab, I believe).

Haven’t played Avernum, but in Exile: EftP there are 2 vahnatai dungeons (which reappeared in Exile 2) and a reference to them in the hint books.  Since I’m assuming E2 took more than a year to complete, I think Jeff was well aware of the sequels while designing E1.

Was that the original Exile: Escape from the Pit or the version with the updated graphics?

Yes, they are. Only the lame basic knowledge books in the Anama Temple require you to be real members.

Which is a bit weird, but there you go.

Imagine the fits of rage it would induce if you actually had to actually join the crazy cult everone loves to hate to get an otherwise unobtainable item or 3rd level spell. Since you can join the Anama for free, those basic knowledge books are simply a neat bonus if you actually want to play an Anama run.

    *Hundred Yard Stare*

... I've been pronouncing Avernum wrong the entire time.

Latin pronounciation is usually a bit of an issue for native English-speakers, so don't worry, no one around is likely to have noticed unless they were Latin teachers, in which case they would likely have pointed out the error of your ways.

For me, the great shock was realizing how much time has passed since I first started playing Spiderweb games back with Nethergate. This is how I see Jeff Vogel in my mind. By the way, does anyone know the fate of Spider? Is there a successor?

PS: Speaking of pronounciation, "Vogel" is actually pronounced "Fogel". Just thought I'd add this bit of trivia for anyone who isn't familiar with the Germanic languages.

  7. In my experience, the best reason to join the Anama is the discounted training you can receive from Voorn in Bavner. Just make sure you have a lot of gold, buy the fake rings, have Voorn train you, grab as much loot as you can from the restricted areas in the main temple, and then have Ahonar destroy the rings. Even without the loot you will make back the money you paid to the guild and then some.

  8. It took me a while to track down the old coot once I too realized he was the reason I couldn't find the tower. In addition to appearing in either Delan and Krisznan, he also spends time travelling between the two towns and is frequently found in neither even if you run back and forth during the same day. I think it takes about a day for him to make the journey.

  9. Your post made curious about whether there is in fact not a single turn-based, 2D/isometric MMORPG for smartphones or tablets. A couple of quick Google searches turned up a game called Dofus Touch, which appears to be a tactical, isometric, turn-based MMORPG.

  10. It's probably easier to lure the enemies into the area with friendly creatures. In some games, you can use this to force friendly NPCs to fight and possibly be killed by hostile monsters and NPCs, particularly if you use the Wand of Carrunos to power them up. Nethergate in particular offers several opportunities for this, especially since it doesn't have the super-powered Guards that the Avernum games have.

I didn't mean the quest items, I meant mundane items as a make up pot, bellows or the aforementioned cloak and sugar. I knew that  some merchants sell these things, but had to search to find them again. I just thought that a list of upcoming job board items would be helpful. Then we could collect them for later when we stumble over them.
By the way, is there anybody in this game who needs my collection of Aranea fangs?

edit: found it; nobody wants the fangs ;_; Maybe I'll use them to decorate my mansion's garden :)

I forgot that it only lists non-board quest items, my bad. Besides, it's kind of fun to try to figure out where you can find the items, especially since surprisingly many of them are under the watchful eyes of their owners. For example, the drug den in Gale was the perfect place to pick up a pipe.

    Yes of course - I didn't complain :)

Naturally, but it never hurts to elaborate on all the awesome features that Spiderweb games are packed with. I just had the realization that by publicly expressing ourselves about their games, we are all brand ambassadors of Spiderweb Software. A heavy responsibility indeed.

Thank you for this topic, APV, much appreciated - I indeed found my revenant in the Spiral Crypt :)

Now I just ran around for ages to find a Beautiful Cloak and a Bag of Sugar (cause I sold them all). Is there somewhere a list of Items to Keep for Job Board Quests?

Right here. And I believe you can buy most (probably all) items for job board delivery quests from one merchant or another, including the ones wandering the world map.

I cannot deliver my message to Mother Loomis anymore since I accidently killed Spurn when he jumped at me - and now whole Bavner is mad at me.

    Another feature :D

If actions didn't have consequences, Animaxander would simply greet you with a disinterested grunt every time you came back from defeating yet another horde of magically engineered monstrosities, the Empress couldn't care less that you just saved Valorim, and those nice farmers wouldn't give you free cake for your efforts to control the local unicorn population. I definitely consider this to be a great and very realistic feature in Avernum 3: Ruined World.

  15. Regarding no. 4, I believe it to be intentional to force you to balance your inventory space for the possibly hazardous journey,  making you choose between taking those extra scrolls and potions or stocking up on goods. Besides, you can just use the junk bag to load up with the maximum number of sellable bales. In the originals, the weight of all items you carried, as opposed to only equipped items, was used to calculate your encumberance, so loading yourself down with merchandise left you vulnerable in case you were caught in a fight.
