Massing weak battle creations is a horrible waste of essence and creation spaces. Ranged creations are almost as tough as battle creations of the same tier anyway, and much tougher than battle creations of lower tiers, so they can look after themselves. Besides, the main threat to ranged creations is other ranged creations, which a meatwall won't help you much against.
